What is this family refusing to do? Kill their daughter because she was kidnapped and gang raped. You suck, Pakistan.

I noticed that you didn`t answer my question:

If the victim dies during the torture, do you think you should continue whipping the corpse to the full count of 100? Or is their death enough?

No, I am not joking. It`s a serious question. The passage in the Koran explicitly states 100 lashes as a direct order from god. So it`s not clear that death is enough reason to stop.

You also ignored the theological dispute within Islam as to whether the appropriate punishment for having sex without the approval of the authorities is torture that might kill the victim (whipping) or torture that will definitely kill the victim (stoning). It isn`t clear which Islam requires.
to get to the position of recieving this punishment, you need 4 witnesses who saw the full penetration, not implied.
If that was true, it would never happen. It does happen. So what you`ve written is not true.
"there are two signs of judgment day that i have not seen yet; one is that women would be clothes and naked at the same time (bikinis, skin tight outfits, etc...), and men using whips like cow tails (like the current whips we have now)." Just to show they had a different, less painful whip.
Rubbish.

At most, it might show that their whips didn`t look like cow tails. Which is true of a very wide variety of whips, including many that would kill the victim with far less than 100 strokes.

Your best defence of your religion is a false statement that the torture you advocate for sex without the approval of the authorities is less torturous than it might seem to be.

Not much of a defence.

Don`t you mean we IAB-ers are able to think clearly and as a result reject the lies told by a schizophrenic child molester (muhammed)?

@ CrakrJak - good link. any faith other than their own is illegal. Nice people, so tolerant.

Also, A woman in Saudi Arabia got sentanced to 10 Lashes ... her crime? Driving a car. Yep...that`s it. Fortunately, the king intervened but only after international attention. If CNN hadn`t picked up the story she`d be publically whipped.

10 LASHES

Yeah, we really gotta be more tolerant of these people.

"
i) 100 lashes might well kill someone. "

to get to the position of recieving this punishment, you need 4 witnesses who saw the full penetration, not implied. most people would admit to the crime so they get punish in this life and not the after life. and idk what kindof whipping you are thinking of, but it would be one that would not kill. The prophet (PBUH) said "there are two signs of judgment day that i have not seen yet; one is that women would be clothes and naked at the same time (bikinis, skin tight outfits, etc...), and men using whips like cow tails (like the current whips we have now)." Just to show they had a different, less painful whip.

He, (PBUH), also said to not mix culture and religion. that culture was the reason for earlier corruption. The Arabs told the new muslims when islam first came, "would you deny the tradition of your father and forefathers`?"

ruez
"but tradition does not equal to religion, "
When a religion has been around a long time, tradition and religious teaching can get blurred together.

For example, there is nothing in the Bible that says Mary Magdelane was a prostitute, but tradition teaches she is so that is accepted by most christians as a part of their religious teaching.

I`m not trying to pick on christianity, I suppose this is true of any faith that has been around a good long while.

slut_etta:

I`m still waiting for you to explain why you think that the "honor" killings of men point to the "lack of empathy or respect that that particular society affords its women."?

You replied by saying something different and irrelevant. That`s not an answer. You stated this:
the concept of honor killings just points to the lack of empathy or respect that that particular society affords its women.
Note that you explicitly referred to the entire concept of honor killings.

At least 30% of the victims are men, maybe more. Nobody knows for sure, because it`s not an issue. They`re only men. It`s not as though they`re people.

So, please explain why you think that the "honor" killings of men demonstrate lack of empathy and respect for women.

I think ignoring their deaths solely because they`re men demonstrates lack of empathy and respect for men. And it`s normal in your cou

Religious courts.
Religiously motivated actions in line with religious texts.

So your claims that it has nothing to do with religion prove that either you`re lying or you`re ignorant of the religion.

ii) The theologically correct punishment is not as clear as you make out. You should read more Islamic material - there is internal theological disagreement about whether the punishment for sex without the approval of the religious authorities should be prolonged torture that might kill the victims or prolonged torture that will definitely kill the victims.

Religion of peace. Sure - corpses don`t make any noise. Very peaceful.

"I would blame it on religion, and truly it`s partly the fault of Islamic teachings, but it`s not just about that. "

Actually this goes completely against islam. before islam, the arabs had a similar tradition of burying their daughters alive, but that became banned since its murder. also, if someone commits fornication (im excluding rape), the punishment is 100 lashes, not death. read the quran before speaking.
@angilion. the lack of respect for women is demonstrated by the percentages of female murder as opposed to male murder. duh.
The official admitted to 30% of the victims being male, although they dismissed those victims as much as possible. The official is employed in a human rights position, so they have to dismiss men`s lives in order to keep their job.

They also said, very plausibly, that many of the murders are reported as suicides. Given that murdering women is seen as being so much worse than murdering men, it`s also plausible that the proportion of murders of men that are reported as suicides is higher than the corresponding figures for women. So it`s probably higher than 30%.

But even at 30%, your total dismissal of their lives is profoundly sexist and demonstrates the sexist lack of empathy and respect you were referring to.

A great many of these people continue to adhere to their traditional ways after they have emigrated as well.

I would blame it on religion, and truly it`s partly the fault of Islamic teachings, but it`s not just about that. The wider non-muslim parts of the Indian continent and South/Central Asian region also have an appalling record of crimes and attitudes towards women`s rights. Google India kitchen accidents, but do NOT do an image search.

Honor Killings only happen on planet Earth.
Sorry dude, it`s global. Iraq, Iran, Afganastan, All fundamentalist muslim nations. Sometimes it happens in the U.S. and Europe but either not-so-much or they hide it. You hear it in the news once in a while, some father taking down his daughter for being "too western". Better to kill her, right?

It would create chaos, but I`m undecided whether that would leave the people who actually need aid better off or worse off. It both relieves and causes suffering and death and it`s unclear which it does more of. It isn`t just official foreign aid either - charitable organisations have similar problems.

Can you explain why you think that the "honor" killings of men point to the "lack of empathy or respect that that particular society affords its women."?

Or is it just that men are of no importance, so their deaths are irrelevant? The fact that attitude is quite normal in "the west" points to the lack empathy or respect that "the west" affords its men.

Thetas. You`re right. This mainly happens in rural pakistan, but this adds to the problem.

The majority of women`s rights movements in pakistan are NGOs held by upper class women. Women of different classes are oppressed in different ways, and an upper class woman would NEVER be treated like this. The level of oppression she faces is nowhere near the oppression of rural women. Since these classy ladies are not affected by this, these killings often do not take priority in women`s rights movements. And often women in rural areas have no power, and therefore no say in what goes on in their communities. It`s all a part of the system. It`s why in pakistan, women can run for state, but can also be victims of their government.

We don`t need to embrace this kind of diversity.

I don`t see how Islam comes into this. Nowhere in the Quran does it say anything about honour killings - they are a tribal tradition, not a religious order. Frankly, families who commit those atrocities are not real followers of Islam. Furthermore, it is not the courts advocating an honour killing takes place, if you read the article you would know that.

It really is one of the most sickening and barbaric practises that exists today, and it exists not only in Pakistan but other parts of the middle-east, and indeed Africa (where the tradition originated, as a tribal custom that is not necessarily tied to any major religion). I really hope this case has a big impact on people`s views, it is unacceptable in this day and age to be committing such things. I`m sad to hear about the reaction however, this no doubt will continue to occur behind closed doors until there is serious political reform.
