SAT verbal scores fell this year because the test became more accessible to underprivileged students. That means more students in poo schools and more ESL students took the test, which lowered the average.

Good thing I took the SAT in 2010. =D I`m still one of the smart ones.

I wouldn`t venture to say that we`re getting "dumber," just a lot more stressed. So many schools paint the SAT to be this ultimate life-decider of a test which determines your entire future. God help you if you do bad on your SAT`s, you might as well just give up on college and life because with those scores you`re never going anywhere. At least, that`s how it was when I was in high school.

I dont know if kids are `dumber than ever` but they sure as hell are more distracted then we have ever been.

So our standard for "smart" is how high someone scores on a standardized test? I don`t know about that...

If this is true, this is a problem with education and not intellectual ability. I agree with CrakrJak that the Department of Education should be abolished; we should let capitalism do to education what capitalism did to food, computers and technology, and the automobile industry.

Also, I don`t think intelligence is strictly defined at one`s birth--I believe it is possible for one to get smarter or dumber. I think a smart person is someone who thinks and expands their mind more.

Do you propose lowering the standard?
Yes, I expect them to read and write. An ability to do math is good also. Knowledge of history is good to help give a context to world view topics.

@paddy215:
Encourage your child to learn and enforce proper spelling.
Other than that, I agree, especially on your response to solvent.

"This is what happens when you stick your kids in a room for eight hours a day and attempt to teach them stupid sh*t they don`t care about."

No, this is what happens when you allow your children to think the valuable education they are receiving is just "stupid poo" that they shouldn`t "care about".

The children aren`t dumber, they just aren`t beng brought up properly and as a result aren`t making use of the education they`re being offered. This is the previous generations fault, not the childrens. The article also states that there was a record amount of students scoring higher than 700, so it seems as if the students with the right values are doing even better than ever before. Encourage you`re child to learn and enforce rules, if you just say "Do your homework", most of them will, but they`ll do a half arsed job then melt their brains in front of an xbox all night.

Granted, the No Child Left Behind policy is deeply flawed. The problem runs much deeper. Parents in general do not teach their children rudimentary concepts like ethics, honor and delayed gratification, or empathy for that matter.
Then off to daycare/preschool/kindergarten they go, where whatever whacko social theory of the day is being implemented on the kids.
Onward(Usually) to public school where the game of tag- in many schools- is disallowed, as it is deemed harmful for their self-esteem. In short, we are depending on the educational system, that is at the mercy of ever changing political whim, to socialize children. When we talk about North Korea and places similar, we describe this as indoctrination.
There is a curious social artifact in Industrialized Nations; Replacing living life with having a life.

1. I don`t understand why every child has to be smart and be able to make it to college. Not everyone is equal and able to be an Engineer, Lawyer, or Doctor; we need some garbage men too.

2. The article wrote that the writing scores have been dropping since it was introduced 6 years ago. DUH! When they first score it they have no sample to compare it too, so naturally the scores are going to be highest in the early years while they are still trying to figure out what "average" is.

3. Standardized tests are stupid and not an indication of knowledge. If a teacher has to teach to a test how are they going to actually make learning interesting?

Also would like to make this point. When I studied for my SAT I used the OFFICIAL SAT book with several real tests. When I did the math section, my scores ranged from the upper 500`s to mid 600`s depending on the test by THEIR official curve. Even though the SAT is "standardized," that does not guarantee that it is perfect. We`re looking at 3 points here, out of hundreds.

But, they have great self esteem, and are aware of gay marriage, and the environment!

Not a bad trade-off. Don`t you think?

Should make good citizens of the world.

I took the SAT last year. The reading part has a section with vocabulary words almost nobody ever uses, and that few will understand. Stupid, in my opinion. If you`ve heard of the Flynn effect you`ll know the curve for IQ tests has had to be adjusted as time goes by to keep it stable, as kids today would score significantly above 100 using the old standards. And if you argue against the second point, on some level you`re admitting that tests are not perfect indicators.

It just bothers me when people seem to think that all kids today are stupid, and that society is one generation away from collapsing.

I don`t see what was wrong with the original headline that you click to read the article thing. At least get rid of the *clicky-clicky* thing, it just looks stupid, put some sort of watermark thing on (like the play logo on videos).

"Even as average scores decline, the number of high scores is growing: in math, the number of students who scored at least 700 on the 800-point test has increased more than 20 percent since 2007."

Second to last paragraph. This article is retarded.

@Solvent "This is what happens when you stick your kids in a room for eight hours a day and attempt to teach them stupid sh*t they don`t care about."

No, this is what happens when you have students that don`t have the willpower or mindset to work hard and study stuff they don`t care about, even if it`s important.

Listen up, kids: the world is globalized now, and kids in Asia don`t want to live in poverty anymore, so they have a better work ethic and they`re studying harder and "stealing" your jobs, because they can do the work better and cheaper because they studied "stupid sh*t" instead of hanging out on i-a-b or youtube or facebook.

Life is hard. You have to work hard to compete, and you are competing with a world of very motivated people.

In other news: this is pathetic. My combined score on the SAT was higher than the average today... but the high score for the SAT when I took it was 1600, not 2400.

No. This is what happens when kids are too dumb to realize the value of an education.

A few years ago when I took the ACT (Basically the Midwest version of the SAT) despite being a great student, I somehow did poorly on the written portion of the exam. I`d say that it`s not necessarily that "kids are dumber", but that we keep trying to hold every generation up to the standards of the last one, when there have been massive changes to our educational system in the decade.

In Vancouver, most of the children entering school as ESL and in need of remedial English were born here! I call that irresponsible parenting, as I would raising a child in an atmosphere where most of the mothers are single high school dropouts on welfare. Let`s put at least some of the blame where it belongs.

The Dept. of Education was founded with the goal of making Americans 99% literate. Literacy rates are lower now than they were then, I believe it`s time we get rid of it and try something new.

Plus, with autocorrect and text speak, no one is really having to learn how to spell. Is anyone surprised? Not I.
