The I-A-B Email of the Day, #6: It"s Back

I bet you thought you"d never see this feature here again, eh? What can I say, the final days of summer took a lot out of me and I"m just now catching up with everything--stuff too mundane to mention, but rest assured, all I-A-B related. So on with the email I"m throwing in two today.
--Fancy
Dear Fancy,

OMG--what have you done? I can"t maneuver your site at all! I know you have to have advertising but HOLY LORD you have masses. In every corner on every page and it blinks, flashes moves and it"s a major distraction. I know, I know--if I dont like it then leave, so actually I"m just here to say Goodbye. The ads at the bottom of the page for Twitter, Stumble etc... They really are in the wrong place and just piss me off. I will move along now. Good luck with fitting in some actual links.

--Dawn, via email (name and address withheld)

Dawn,

You said it--the ads suck--suck like hell. And it-s not only the ads, but other things, but I-m not even going to get into that right now. That said, yeah, the ads blow and I discuss how I can get a few of the more obnoxious ones off every week with management. But what it all comes down to is money--is I-A-B making money? If it is, that-s good because I-A-B is literally earning its keep and we can exist. If it doesnt make money (and it always has, but I-m just saying, if it doesn-t) then management would have to consider keeping dead weight around.

So yeah, I understand, the Meeboo jacks up the site pretty bad (shh, it has a hide function) and a couple of the Google Adsense ads blink and talk (let me know when that happens, they"re not supposed to do that per agreement), but making I-A-B is my full-time job--10 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Hope you come back--it"s not all that crappy--I"ve seen worse.

+

Fancy,

I have been a visitor for a couple years now and have always appreciated the outlandish and "un-newsworthy" segments and articles you share. Your articles recently have begun to truly expose the unjustness and exploitation of power and authority lately. YouTube is good, but you guys hone in on the important and relevant topics. You are becoming my primary resource for deeper news.

Thanks. Oh, and I am an asshole too! Cheers!!!

--Patrick, via email (name and address withheld)

Patrick,

Ah, a nice email for a change--thanks. Yeah, the Mods and I try to cultivate an even balance between dick-and-ball content, newsy current events and ridiculous pop culture. The newsy stuff is always my favorite, but I love poking fun and celebutards--especially when it gets readers pissed.

"Why is I-A-B posting a photo of that skank or a whore Linsday Lohan?" you might see in the forums...

If there happens to be an absurd photo of Lohan"s orange face, Kardashian"s implanted ass or whoever the tart of the week is, its because were just pointing out how retarded they are. We"re certainly not putting them up on pedestals. All were trying to do here is highlight the good stuff and mock the bad stuff.

Highlighting the good, mocking the bad, Fancy

Anyone have a question for I-A-B, Fancy, the Mods, or life in general, just whip up a letter and send it to Fancy right here.

Fancy"s Reader Email of the Day is back. Sorry for its absence, it was a brutal summer... Lots of booze, etc...

"And how did you write a script to find 20+ links a day? Or to filter the good, entertaining user submissions from the bad?"

almightybob1, it was community driven. Anyone could submit links that would be "on hold" until a moderator reviewed and approved them (or or simply removed them). The thumbnails for both pics and videos would be generated automatically upon submission (I only made the auto-thumb script for youtube, supporting youtube.com and youtu.be, which is easy)) and stored in the server. Additionally, in the admin panel, one could set "approved" users so that their links would be auto-approved upon submission.

It was a fun little project. :) As far as I remember, I`ve left some stuff (such as ad management though) somewhat unfinished, since I got myself bored in the process LOL.

Firefox + noscript here.
Never seen the need for adblock really, noscript seems to do the same thing and more.

Dawn... Good riddance!! If you`re too stupid to go find a block addon for all the garbage ads, you really are not making this a better site. You`re an idiot and no one will miss you.

Why winge. Get educated. Dont people understand that there are programs that block ads so we dont actually see them. I dont see the ads, IAB gets the money for the ads. Everyone wins!

Ah, so if I hear any annoying ads or see crazy blinky things, I`ll know to both notify Fancy and to update my ad-blockers.

This is really cool to know. It`s also why I like I-a-b so damn much.

Dear DAWN,

Why the drat are you out of the goddamn kitchen??! Get your fat, whiny ass back in there and make all the people who are not whining (everyone besides you) a motherdrating sandwhich. Oh and then lick my scrotum. That is all.

He. Davy said he was one of the Bored. And, for all intents and purposes, also on the Board. I am so easily entertained (without any factual basis for my humour`s focus).

Firefox with Adblock+ and Ghostery. No more ads and tracking cookies. On my I-A-B i haven`t got a single ad, nothing but the sweet sweet content. And those 8 trackers you have here.. Keep the site excactly like it is, adds won`t be bothering me.

"wait wait wait wait...so someone actually works on this site as a full time job...seriously?"

Please allow me to rephrase this a bit:

wait wait wait wait...so someone actually doesn`t know about Adblock...seriously?

It would have taken less time for her to research the adblock plugin and install it than it would to write a pissy email.

You`d be amazed at the amount of time and effort it takes.

Apart from Fancy (who earns a salary), the rest of us funky multicoloured names do this for free, out of love. Because we`re one of the Bored.

Of course it doesn`t. I`ve made a better looking PHP replica of IAB as a side project just for fun and tested it for a couple of weeks with some friends. (It is not online). It`s a community driven website for god`s sake. Just put it online and let it be.

Adblock+ it is for me!

I never noticed the ads until I accessed the site on a different computer... It was crazy! Maybe if everybody turned off their adblock for this site, we wouldn`t have to do the zany ads just to stay afloat... but until the zany ads go, adblock stays...

I guess there is indeed many things adblock does for me that I`m not even aware of anymore. Which raises the question, who`s paying for all of this dung?

AdBlock+, GreaseMonkey/Stylish, and Chrome here.

Add NoScript to that list. I honestly didn`t know there were any annoyances on I-A-B until one day, on a whim, I turned off AdBlock+ and NoScript.

THERE`S A HIDE FUNCTION!? Honestly it took me a bit to notice the meebo bar. I think I`ve just developed a blind spot in that area.

Ads? what Ads? And What`s a Meebo Bar? Is it little, little ,little double arrow thing that`s smaller than a cursor arrow? And for content, it`s bloody random, and I like that way...

@El Chinche

If people are so hopelessly computer illiterate that they haven;t figured out how to do away with ads yet, they should really just have to suffer through them all. That way sites still get money, and I computer literate people aren`t bothered. I really is the best of both worlds.

Ads pay for the site. Either Fancy runs on ads or donations--and who would pay for the latter?

There is a certain addon for a certain web browser that gets rid of them...

I`m on my iPad. And because of it`s shoddy iOS, I never see the Meebo bar, and half the ads are just white boxes; I never get ads in the YouTube videos.

When I`m on my computer though, those things can get annoying, but I`ve learned to ignore flashy things.

The thing that irks me the most is the eHow links. I remember one that read "How to get your boyfriend to break up with you". I clicked it and read it. It told the reader to do really nasty things like insulting the size of his dick in front of his friends etc. Not really IAB`s fault, but it is something that should be addressed somewhere and I just felt like ranting a bit,
