The number of continents is irrelevant, just like the number of planets (excluding dwarf planets. Sorry Pluto).

Oh and btw there are 7 continents. :)

And why isn`t North down and South up?

Because a standard orientation was useful and they picked that one. Why is east to the right and west to the left? Why aren`t maps on a diagonal, e.g. due west in the top right-hand corner? There isn`t any objectively correct orientation.

I suspect that the standard of putting north at the top of maps stems from the fact that a compass points north and the maps were drawn by people whose writing ran from top downwards.

If I recall correctly, maps used to be orientated with east at the top.

First, Teddy was involved in Panama, but it was actually jp morgan, super billionaire, who made panama happen. Roosevelt wanted to do it in Mexico; it would have cost less to do while giving ships a port in the middle of the canal. Second, I believe it`s political dividing that determines continents. Third, why does this even matter.

Continents are divided depending on which field you`re talking about. In geology, continents are landmasses, and in humanities, a combination of landmass and cultural ties

My elementary school geography book said 7. Since that was way back in the 1960`s when we were still a Christian nation, I`ll assume that that number was selected based on biblical canon and is divinely inspired. Case closed!

As a (studying) geologist, I can tell you it`s a lot more complicated than that. You can kind of define continents as the type of crust - there is a difference between ocean and land that isn`t purely based on how high the water level is. But if you look at the continental shelf, you`ll see that America is actually joined to Russia. If you look at tectonic plates, you`ll find that not all of them are comtintental, and not all of them are easily defined either (technically speaking Australia and India are the same continent). And even within these plates, there are smaller plates, subcontinents (such as Zealandia of which only New Zealands remains), big rifts such as the one in western Africa. Of course, the real answer is that there is no answer - continents are arbitrary, it is based on how we define them.

Before you ask, yes a lot of us play minecraft, and yes it is pretty geologically accurate (for a game with only two types of rock anyway).

Personally I go with Laurasia and Gondwanaland.

This is full of errors but the funniest is suggesting Canada and USA must be split due to cultural differences whereas Europe (for example) remains intact. Riiiiiiggght.

Language is there for a use. That use is for us all to talk to each other and know what we are talking about. We are all taught (most of us anyway) that there are 7 continents.

    Therefore, there are 7 continents.

Nice video! I liked the Nineteen Eighty-Four reference.

Splitting Canada and America because of cultural differences? Lol, I bet the guy who made this video is Canadian. As much as we try to be different, Canadian culture is almost identical to American culture; I remember a comedian at Second City calling Canada "America Lite"--that`s a fairly accurate assessment.

I don`t think classifying continents is as important as classifying countries. People have gone to wars over the definition of "country".
