Popular myth. Numbers specifically talks about the punishment of murders committed outside the tribe setting. There`s nothing in the chapter to back up your theory.

That cartoon disgusts me. Goes to show you that the writer of that cartoon is an atheist and doesn`t know Jack about Christianity.

And, as Jesus Christ in Matthew 24:37-39 uses the event of Noah’s Flood as a warning that God has judged and therefore will judge again, they would have to agree that God is going to come back as judge, but next time He will use fire.

The commandment of no killing only applied to the tribe which the religion was created in. That is why there is so much murder in the bible.

There isn`t a commandment of no killing, so who it is supposed to apply to is a moot point.

You might have an English translation stating "Thou shalt not kill" or the same thing in contempory English, but it`s not what was actually written. "You musn`t kill unless a religious authority figure tells you to" would be a more accurate translation. There are plenty of orders to kill in the Jewish bible and therefore also in the Christian one, many stated as divine commandments.

There is no god, so it`s all a moot point. You don`t kill because it`s a bad thing to do and also because society would punish you.

    Angilion:
"There isn`t a commandment of no killing. You might have an English translation stating `Thou shalt not kill`"

I do. Actually I have... well over 30. Here`s some of them. I`m having trouble finding your translation though.

    Locke357:
You quote the Problem Of Evil by Epicurus.
    This was rebutted by Irenaeus.
In other words: This argument was over 1900 years ago.
It is the Atheistic equivalent to Pascal`s Wager.

    Sounds clever. Isn`t.

    @Baalthazaq:

Well I can`t find his rebuttal, but it`s rather pointless. Epicurus` riddle is quite obviously not an insistence of the non-existence of god(s), but it is attacking the manner in which people perceive and worship god(s). You`re confusing a theological argument with a philosophical one.

"Why is it that everyone thinks that homosexuality is genetic?"

Because it has been shown to be genetic/physical.

    Examples:
Fruit flies can be made gay by changing their genes.

Younger brothers have increased chance of homosexuality irrespective of how they were raised. (Not technically genetic; Just biological).

Twins tend to be gay, or straight, together, at a higher rate than a random sample.

Incidentally, I don`t see why anyone thinks that either argument (Gay is a choice/Gay is genetic) is an argument for either side. I`ve seen gays offended by both, and seen the religious condemn them using either argument (If it`s a choice you can stop/If genetic it`s a disease).

There`s little point in arguing it from an emotional standpoint.

Oh, I`m sorry, it`s a philosophical argument and not a theological one?

Well that changes things. Please reread my response, word for word, knowing that it works irrespective of what type of argument you`re presenting it as.

Okay, so first God refers us back to the first, hence, oldest thing he said, (He didn`t, but go with me, here), then when they say, referring to the gays, "because the Bible says so" He says, "Do you realize how old that book is?", as if to discredit it because it was old. But obey the first thing, the oldest thing, I said in it, but not anything else that may be politically incorrect. This comic fails to make it`s point in a humorous manner because it can`t even agree with itself. Deduct two points, please.

    - Epicurus

Epicurus would have God make humans His puppets on strings, with no choice. God gave man a choice: Choose Him and reject evil, or choose evil and reject Him. To do otherwise, to destroy evil from the start, to give man no choice BUT to follow Him, is no choice at all. So God gave man an entire planet of good, and ONE evil: ONE. and man chose evil. and today, he continues to choose to follow evil over good, by his own volition.
Evil has been defeated, and one day it will be destroyed, and we can be freed from its effects, eternally, but most will still choose evil.

"to give man no choice BUT to follow Him, is no choice at all."
I would agree, but to punish man for not following Him, no matter how good you are otherwise makes me wonder why He would even bother giving us any choice, unless He wanted to see us suffer.

I consider myself to be a good person; I`ve helped many friends through tough times, and work as a catering assistant at a hospital that helps those with borderline personality, and eating disorders. Despite this, every christian I`ve spoken to has said that I am going to hell, just because I do not believe in God. Seems a little unfair to me.

Being `gay` is not genetic, there is no `gay` gene, it`s been looked for by geneticists and not found. Birth order may have something to do with it, but what was found out about that theory is that the youngest boys are `babied` more, by their mothers, because of the tendency of older brothers to abuse them, that`s environment, not genetics.

Being gay is still a choice, sometimes it`s made early in life and the person has no idea they made it, other times it`s brought on by some form of trauma.

A child still in their formative years with an abusive parent calling them `queer` all the time has a huge effect on that child`s psyche, no matter what birth order or genes they have.

Gayness is not a true or false question either, there are many bi-sexuals as well, which adds to the credence that`s it`s a lifestyle choice.

For arguments sake though. let`s say that geneticists ever find a `gay gene`, if they did it could be treated like a birth defect and genetic therapies could be found to cure it.

Whoops! Looks like you gays pushed that `We`re born that way` rhetoric a bit too far, now there won`t be anymore gays in the future. Oh wait, what is this ? Twenty years later after the genetic cure for gayness was found there are still gay people you say ? Well then that must mean *GASP* it was a choice after all.

Gays, you are in a no win situation here, right now most of you are being told you were born that way, but that inevitably leads to the path of it being `cured`. If you side with it being a choice then you don`t qualify to be a minority like blacks, asians, jews, natives, etc.

Why would wou think someone would CHOOSE to be gay? To have the risk of being beaten to death on the middle of the street if a troubled homophobic was there? To be humiliated when a hater had the chance to do that? To be called names and don`t have the same (social) rights as everyone else?

Do you think ANYONE would REALLY choose that for his/her life?

Besides, homossexuality is probably genetic. If it wasn`t then everyone would be able to have sex with both men and women and enjoy it (because physiologically they would be turned on by both genders).

If what you say is true, then you technically can have sex with men, too, you just don`t choose to do that. Is that correct? (Plain English: would your dick get hard and you be pleased if you had sex with a man? I don`t think so...)

@CrakrJak What a horrible rant that is. It comes as no surprise that your profile states:

    Sexual Preference: Straight
    Religion: Christian
    Politics: Conservative

Did you CHOOSE to be attracted to women or were you ` born that way`? I`m straight but I couldn`t be gay if I TRIED, even if I had a gun to my head. The decision doesn`t dictate the feeling, why do you think there are people who try for years to be straight and `normal` in the eyes of society when that is not their true sexuality..

By saying kindness is earned it make me feel like you`re just a dick to every person you meet until they earn your "well deserved" kindness. I don`t think I want your kindness, I shouldn`t have to earn it, as the same species we should respect each other and being on top of the food chain respect all other animals and the world we live in.

It`s not necessarily choice vs. gentics. Experiences shape your personality unconsciously without it being genetic.

As for all the bible stuff....there is no right and wrong in the end. All there is is people pushing their own ideas and customs on everybody else. If you like something and think everybody should do it, you call it right, if you don`t, you call it wrong. But it`s all based on your own subjective values.

Why is it whenever religion comes up, both sides (thiests and athiests) have to dumb the argument down to it`s basest form? There`s a lot more nuance to religious philosophy than either side gives credit to.

"Why would wou think someone would CHOOSE to be gay?"

I once suggested that society should try to create a pill you could take to not be gay. That way, gay people COULD choose whatever they want.

Yet gay people get all offended when you suggest that. Why?

Jowsh: Being `normal` doesn`t require a choice, going against nature and being gay does require a choice. Staying safe and not jumping out of an airplane is not a choice, it`s just common sense, Jumping out of an airplane with, or without, a parachute is an unnatural act, but people still do it.

Woah, KPres spam. "I once suggested that society should try to create a pill you could take to not be gay. That way, gay people COULD choose whatever they want." except that would only make the issue worse. Until there are a lot less homophobs in the world it would be used as another tool for anti gay speeches. such as "there`s a pill, take it you queer"

CJ, you`ve been asked this before by me and others, and you`ve dodged the answer every time. You and I are both heterosexual males. I get off on tits and ass, just as you do. If it`s just a lifestyle choice, could you be persuaded/coerced/convince yourself to get off on a video of a guy blowing another guy? I know I couldn`t. Could you? Is it really a choice?

Or, you know, just avoid acknowledging the valid question yet again.

davymid: It`s not a valid question. Does one have to choose to not be a rapist ? Does one have to choose to not rob banks ? Answer, of course not to both questions, because being normal and moral does not take a conscious choice. It takes a conscious choice to act on abnormal urges.

Now before you start saying I`m comparing rapists and criminals to homosexuals, I`m only comparing their choices, not the acts themselves.

We are the choices we make, if you install steel beams on skyscrapers then you`re an ironworker, if you don`t no one calls you a non-ironworker now do they ?

Draculya, you`re right but for some reason that`s just not a good enough reason for most people on earth to refrain from committing some truly horrible acts against other humans... sad but true. I`ll hold out hope, though, that maybe more and more people will understand this.

And most of everyone`s posts make me wonder ... "God" says choose me=choose good, not choosing god=choosing evil.... that doesn`t seem right to me, why is it supposed to be impossible for humans to choose `good` without choosing god? I think it`s possible, but then I`m a stubborn optimist.

Wendypants: You don`t have to choose God or evil, you can do all kinds of good works, but that doesn`t mean you`ll be saved. Conversely you could be a real evil person up until the day you die and ask for forgiveness and you will be saved.

I`m not saying you should do the later of those, you won`t get much in the way of rewards in heaven, but that`s better than doing good all your life, never asking for forgiveness, then end up in hell.

Sometimes I hear, "But I hate how they get all `preachy` at churches" or "Going to church just isn`t my thing", and that`s fine. No one says that asking for forgiveness demands that you go to a church, sit there, and be bored, `To be a good Christian`. It doesn`t hurt to seek guidance from other Christians, but it`s not required that you join a church, OK ?

because being normal and moral does not take a conscious choice.

Yes it does. Just not in the circumstances you chose to support your argument.

There is no way I could engage in a sexual act with another man. There`s no reason for me to do so, and I know if I did the memory would be harmful to my mental health because the act would be at odds with who I am as a person.

I could, however, sleep with my friend`s wife because she is hot and I know for a fact that she would because she`s offered in the past. The desire is huge and I`ve even lost sleep because I couldn`t stop thinking about it but I don`t because it would be wrong.

Desire is the key factor here. Add desire to any of those instances you just mentioned (rape, bank robbing, steel working) and all the sudden it becomes a choice to not do those things.

Have you ever felt the desire to engage in a sexual act with another man?

Brassbull: I`ve desired many women in the past, but never raped a single one, and it didn`t take a conscious decision not to. I`d bet many people have seen bags of money in an armored car, desired the money therein and never made a choice to not rob it.

Resisting desire does not require a choice when you`re a normal moral person.

-->OK, so let me get this straight...you`re saying that you can be tempted by something, but do the right thing without a conscious choice because you are a normal moral person.

Let`s take your example of the unguarded armored car filled with money. Someone asks, "Would you steal the money?"

The honest person says "no". The dishonest person says "yes". You say "what money?"

Either you`re oblivious to the fact that you did make a moral decision in a split-second, you`re lying that you made a moral decision, you have no self-awareness/concept of ownership, or

CJ, isn`t resisting temptation one of the basic principles of Christianity. If there were no temptation to resist because moral people don`t need to make a choice nullify your whole religious purpose? I thought everyone is filled with sin and it is only by denying that sinful nature and accepting Jesus that anyone can be saved. If you are born moral and have no need to make moral choices in life, then everyone is predestined for heaven or hell based on the presence or absence of morality. Wouldn`t that render the bible as misleading?

    on abnormal urges

Of course because being gay has always been seen as `abnormal` to the far right. That`s why after APA`s decision to remove homosexuality from the DSM they immediately started going from `disease` to `choice`.

I admit, that`s a good point crakrjak, BUT I would personally live a good life without religion and then end up in hell (yes, I really would) than live a bad life with religion and end up in heaven.
