@BigDaddyJeff - `they want their fair share`, of what exactly? Being a couple and loving each other - wow, stamp that out then.

"[...] then use it to sue churches that stick by their guns and refuse to `marry` them."

This is where it becomes obvious you`re just pulling things out of your ass.

Any church can refuse to marry any couple for any reason whatsoever. This is guaranteed by the First Amendment, even. What would be illegal is if the couple went to the courthouse and were denied a marriage license.

I think the problem here is that most people don`t realize that there are two definitions of marriage that are carelessly being interchanged here. On one hand, you have the religious definition, and on the other hand you have the civil definition.

For myself, I`d like this jerkweed to elaborate on how 1 man, 1 woman marriage is reflected in nature. Then, I`d like to know why government has an interest in a contractual arrangement between private citizens that involve housing, finance, and procreation- er, I mean marriage.

@Crakr

"They want to force straights to recognize them as `normal` and then use it to sue churches that stick by their guns and refuse to `marry` them. "

Many churches have no problem marrying gay couples. Being recognized by a religion as unified is not an issue.

"This has nothing to do with legal status and all to do with changing American culture."

Kind of like the Civil War was all about "States Rights." *cough*

@Crakr: Give me one logical reason why homosexuals should not have the right to marry. And no, "tradition" since for many societies it was an exchange of property, not a moral standpoint.

markust: If you had asked gays 40 years ago if they wanted `marriage` most of them would`ve told you something like, "Hell no, why would I want that ?" or "That`s something straights do, why do that ? I want my freedom."

It has only been recently that gays have been saying they want `marriage` and it`s not because of discrimination, it`s because they want to destroy the word`s definition. They want to force straights to recognize them as `normal` and then use it to sue churches that stick by their guns and refuse to `marry` them.

This has nothing to do with legal status and all to do with changing American culture.

"Why do gay relationships need to be called marriages when they can receive all of the social benefits if from a civil union?"

As long as all marriages in the legal form are called civil unions I have no problem with that. If you are just doing it for gays you are treating them like second class citizens. The same argument was brought up when people were trying to legalize interracial marriages. Pretty much every hateful argument being brought up today was brought up against interracial marriages. And please do not take this as me saying you are being hateful, you are just asking a question.

Not much of a rant at all..Compared to people who believe homosexuality is not real or evil, his position is actually reasonable. To me, it seems like the debate is simply over a word. Why do gay relationships need to be called marriages when they can receive all of the social benefits if from a civil union?..

@Raikun12 - WOW! It IS my gay stage name. Have you beenwatching my movies again?

@Finker - because they think they are entitled to what everyone else has whether they are or not. This is the age of entitlements and the gay community wants to make sure they get their fair share.

@Laztme484 - as dumb as you are my friend.

@BigDaddyJeff - if marriage is just for procreation then why do gay people want to get married do you think? Will it mean they suddenly start having babies? Can`t wait for that.

BigDaddyJeff, The the elderly or widows shouldn`t be allowed to marry or re-marry since they can no longer produce health stock for our society.
also, big daddy jeff sounds like a gay porn stage name just putting that out there...

Oh geez- So I guess the men and women who are married that either can NOT or do NOT procreate should no longer be recognised as a married couple? Dang GET OVER IT- LOVE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF THE EQUATION! HOW IS THAT WRONG? Let it happen and celebrate LOVE

"Marriage is for procreation" since when?

The question is WHAT SHOULD THE GOVERNMENT PROMOTE IF ANYTHING? Is still see no reason that the government should promote "marraige."

Male 368
the bottom line is this. Marriage is for procreation and since two men can not procreate banging each other and two women can not procreate banging each other there is no reason they need to get married. PERIOD! End of story.

There is no protection for gay marriage. Marriage is a priveledge, not a right.

Is there a lack kids in this country. No so having kids is not a thing that needs to be supported by the government. One reason for marraige only between man and women down.

Is having well adjusted kids good for society, well I would say yes. So if the reason kids are not well adjusted is due to being raised by a "gay" couple then perhaps the government should support the alternative. However, when we look at the reason children do not become contributing adults it has MUCH MUCH more to do with things like poor educational opportunities, low income, and drug abuse of family and friends than with whether or not the parents are gay.

Perhaps, by the argument of Santorum, the government would better serve society by focusing on these issues.

I also do not see that the equal protection clause support "gay" marriage. On that point I agree with him. On his other points I have some issues.

1st if we take as true that the government should promote activities that promote the society at large we must recognize that there are limits to this power. For example smoking causes cancer, so should the government outlaw smoking? Swimming pools provide no benefit to society other than pleasure yet cause a large number of deaths each year. Should they be outlawed. Or should the government provide tax advantages to those that do not have pools?

From the argument that the government should promote things that benefit society we could argue that promoting marriage between men and women is a role of government if this union provides a benefit to society. His arguments for this benefit all seem to relate to raising kids. So now we must demonstrate that this is a benefit to society. Continued above.

"All the presidential candidates have warts"

Did I mishear that? Have they been involved in that recent STD scare in the adult film industry?

He should have problems with the founders, lots of them weren`t religious nut jobs.

I was married to a man for 7 of the 11 years we were together. My husband`s Aunt cried for three days off and on when our marriage fell apart. This was three years ago. I still consider his side family. I am in Switzerland visiting his brother right now. We don`t call each other brother-in-law we call each other brother. You haters can suck it!

Clearly homosexuality must serve some kind of purpose in Nature. So many different species have displayed homosexual behavior that it has to mean something. I`d love to hear Santorum explain why Giraffes have gay sex more often than heterosexual sex. And can He explain Hermaphroditic species that are bisexual such as a Bananna Slug? Are we seriously going to pretend like science doesn`t exist?

His statement that Nature reflects that Marriage is between one Man and one Woman is simply untrue. He should go do some research. Homosexuality in Nature

This is dumb. Right away I can see him contradicting himself. He says that marriage has existed for a long time, beyond governments, and thus it shouldn`t be changed, yet he then says that marriage is a privilege granted by the government.

Even if I knew absolutely nothing and couldn`t easily prove him to be factually incorrect, I could *still* see he was full of sh*t.

It doesn`t look like there are any respectable Republican candidates. However much of a wimpy, indecisive, compromising, inefficient guy obama might be, you`ll be stuck with him for a while.

politicans need to stop talking about this stuff, marriage no matter if its between a man/woman, man/man, woman/woman, just no dog/cat that leads to mass hysteria according to dr venkman. this is not a civilization destroying issue, now a bankrupt nation is, a nation with no real plan to fix education is, a nation having no real innovation or ambition and accept a nanny state, those are civilization destroying problems. but this stuff is hot topic issues and it diverts you from asking real questions because the uber religious get up in arms about two guys sword fighting, or two women scissoring in the bed room. just stupid, next time ask how gay marriage is going to destroy to save the educational system, or how its going to damn or save the economy and how bruce/sven or beth/meg getting married is causing a gang banger to kill someone or is causing massive layoffs

Yes, Rick, and if gay marriage ever goes through, just think what will happen! It`s legal in Canada, and now we have, um, .....er, well, married gay people. Yeah! You don`t want that to happen, `cause, uh...
Lemme get back to you on that, Rick.

Even though I disagree with his stance on marriage at least his statement makes more sense then the napkin analogy. He sounded like even more of an idiot.

The constitution changes that`s why we have amendments. We define society, if a collective group of people want to live differently then let them. How can you moralistically attack gay marriage without attacking divorce, something he does not even mention. He acts like if you were raised by heterosexuals then you a wonderful wholesome childhood. Do people really want these religious nuts running our country? Can you imagine getting a knock on your door from the police because you missed church on Sunday morning? Welcome back Spanish Inquisition.

"Reflected in Nature" ?
Like 1 male lion among a dozen females that make a Pride?
"Reflected in human society" ?
Like the asian courts with many, many wives or the muslim tradition of many wives? Or the old testement accounts of multiple wives?

"From the beginning of time"
I don`t the neanderthals documented it.

"Purposes of procreation & raising children"
All childless couples are not valid marriages?

As a possible next of kin to his aunt, he does have specific rights granted by the government that gay couples don`t have.

"Marriage is unique"
Agreed. Mine is 2 men, your`s is 1 man/1 woman. Unique.

"We reduce it`s significance in value"
You mean Newt Gingrich who`s working on his 3rd wife {I`m sure not the last}.

"It`s about society. Man and woman marry, have children, and so on and so on... This is what society should promote."

What about heterosexual couples with no intention of having children? Or couples who can`t have children? Should it be illegal for them to marry?

And yes, having a mother and a father may be the best family situation (I don`t have the stats on that, but I`ll assume it for the time being). However, is having one father better than having two fathers? Is one mother better than two? Of course not.
