Carmium, it may feel weird now but, the application,
as it is in American English, is not accidentally
related to the operation you described.
To see something similar, try finding the origin
of the word "escape."

Another weird word that has come to existence in
our lifetime, "debit," which did not exist before
the mid-80`s and became a listed word in the 90`s,
has it`s origin in misunderstanding, mispronunciation
and regional dialectic twist of the word "debt."
When people were asked to pronounce it then, write it,
the most common misspelling/mispronunciation of
"debt" became a newly listed English word.
BTW, going by that standard, "jiggy" as in
"gettin` jiggy wit` it" should now be listed...

So, in another hundred years, school children may
even be down-marked for misspelling "shuddup" or
"shaddap" depending on which regional d

OK, I always look on the weird side, but when you think of it, isn`t it odd that what you do the summer cabin come September has become the definitive way to say "stop talking!" in English? There are many other possibilities, but we just love the sound of SHUDDUP!
