Send a bunch of american land whales (frequently seen at walmart, nascar races, and the south in general) over there with no food. Everything will be digested before you know it.
did anyone ever notice that poor people create trash. They throw crap everywhere. I theorize that it`s this attitude more than any social injustice that keeps them in poverty.
Your grasp of the nuances of the socioeconomic forces which shape our world is astounding. [/sarcasm]

Hmmm well they already have a strong recycling system there why not build a waste to energy plant?? A water filtration system sounds wise too.

This used to be such a nice neighborhood until `those people` moved in.
You know, `the wrong sort`.

You guys need to do some research before posting. I believe this is Citarum, in Indonesia.
There are also slums in Africa that look similar.

Many people there suffer terrible health effects from the trash. Some make their money by digging through for recyclables.

Places like these are often the result of corrupt politicians. The rich get richer and the poor get sicker.

If someone`s neat and responsible they can get a job and pull themselves out of poverty. At least in many countries.
But not in that one.

Your comments apply well to things such as littering in towns and cities in wealthier countries, but they don`t apply here.

Most of the pollution is from industry and urban areas, where a lack of environmental laws coupled with a big increase in urbanisation and industrialisation has led to the river being a dumping ground. Downriver, where it flows more slowly, this is what happens. The people who live there didn`t create the problem. 20 years ago they were fishing there in a fairly clean river. Now they pick through the rubbish in a dead river for recyclable material.

"didn`t the poor people move there because of the rubbish "

yes. I don`t understand why they don`t just go out and live in the jungle, it`d be a better life than this.

sgibson12: To quote Margret Thatcher: "I`ve been there [a very poor part of London], and there was litter everywhere. Are you telling me that people are too poor to pick up a bit of litter."

I take it you have never been to India, or Africa for example? You really don`t have a clue what you`re talking about, so I suggest you just keep quiet.

@sgibson12 What an ignorant person you must be.. Most people living in conditions like this work harder in a day than we do in a week.

I suppose you don`t have any issues finding drinking water, food and medicine?

Don`t be so narrow minded. Yes things can be better, but to simply concentrate on one point such as being "neat and responsible" is disillusioned. Imagine yourself born in a world where you didn`t have the luxury of schools or a proper household. And your instincts are just telling you to survive day by day. Food, water, and shelter. They could care less about the trash around them. Yes you can change your environment, but being born into that environment shouldn`t be so quick to criticize.

@sbeelz:

agreed - there are literal garbage cities in countries like egypt and India - where garbage dumps will essentially grow cities, as people move there to make a living off of rooting through the filth.

I don`t think this is the "poor neighborhood." I think it`s a shanty-town literally built on a garbage dump.
