@5cats I disagree with you comparing hunting with crime(but I do see where one may have a problem with this), however, if they are killing it just to kill it that than yes, it is wrong. But if they are going to eat it then I say to them: Have at it you crazy spear jumping people.

its part of their culture. not one part of that whale goes to waste, and helps out their entire village in some way or another. it isnt hunting for sport, its hunting to sustain life, get over it. besides, has anybody ever done research on the extremely excessive and wasteful american bison hunting that occurred with the expansion westward? dont throw stones, glass house.

Eyedea, so your saying if a civilization does something you must always accept whatever that something is regardless of how horrible it is? Where do you draw the line?

Lets say a culture tortures and eats anyone once they turn 40 whether they accept it or it`s against their will.

Acceptance isn`t the way because their will always be people unwilling to compromise and anyways compromise means settling for a lesser outcome.

The only true way to achieve a lasting world peace is to require all cultures to act within a set of rules and if they do not, destroy them. Regardless of how many people you lose it doesn`t matter because in the end you will have a lasting world peace. Unless you are completely wiped out which is basically the same outcome as doing nothing, you`re just letting evil flourish.

Just look at Syria, when you focus on military strength crushing the opposition little by little is nothing.

    =)

    @Klamz

You`re assuming that there`s something fundamentally wrong with killing animals. There`s not. Homo sapiens are omnivores, which means that they rely on a diet of meat and plants in order to live. They have for thousands of years. What these villagers are doing is sustainably hunting a food source that will feed their village for weeks or months. They aren`t using huge pneumatic harpoons. They aren`t using cannons. They`re using hand thrown spears to kill ONE whale. As long as whaling can be done sustainably than there`s nothing wrong with it. Animals killing animals for food is a part of life. These people are hunting sustainably, and shouldn`t be told they can`t because others aren`t.

BTW, world peace is a myth. It can`t be obtained. Even if everyone was the same race, the same nationality, and the same religion, it`s an unobtainable goal. Our country isn`t even at peace with itself, what makes you think 7 billion people can all be at peace with each other?

Awesome. I know some people would rather see whales saved and villagers starving.

I like the Americans that have a problem with this. A wasteful country that throws away more food then some of these people will ever see, has the nerve to condemn how some people make their money/food.

World peace is attainable if you make the movie equilibrium a reality and place bombs with numerous redundancy backups in people so that if they don`t think the way they should they die. Basically robots, but hey, it`s peace.

Back to the issues at hand. If killing a whale is okay why is killing a human not okay? If anything we deserve it far more than a whale. With overpopulation and our destructive nature we certainly deserve it. Keep in mind I`m not saying eat a human as you`ll end up with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

What happens when an animal kills a human? We hunt it down and kill it.

Somehow humans are `above` other animals?

    Humans deserve to die, painfully.

In a way I agree with Klamz.

If we found a humpback whale on another planet not only would we classify it as a life form, there is also very likely that we would consider it intelligent life owing to it`s behavior and social activity.

Bearing that thought in mind the question arises by what right other than ability do we choose to hold in captivity or kill intelligent creatures that have co-evolved along side us on this planet?

If it is simply a matter of our ability to do so, why make an exception for our own species? If I have the power to kill or capture another human being what moral compulsion should preclude me doing so?

Klamz, your arguments are dumb tbh. They`re killing the animal to eat it. It`s no different from killing a cow or chicken.

Killing humans is "wrong" because it`s against the law.

This is horrific and disgusting. No animal has the right to kill another just because it needs "food" to "live."

I`m actually starting an organization to spread knowledge about the terrible plight of species lower on the food chain. We`re going to try to prevent any species from taking advantage of or killing another. Our first target is lions. We plan on taking them to court in order to end their reign of terror in Africa and Asia. Did you know they often kill their prey by strangulation? That`s torture and an unspeakable way to act. Those poor zebras have been persecuted for years. It`s time someone stands up for them.

By that statement your indicating that the term law is synonymous with moral. Unfortunately morals transcend any government. Morals are can be defined best by a group of reasonable average people using the golden rule.

Would you like to be murdered and eaten? No? Then it`s wrong. How about someone you care about? No? Then it`s wrong!

I`m happy that every part of it goes for a purpose and when I murder you`re children I`ll be sure to wear their head as a hat and their skin as pajamas. That makes you feel better right?

    Au contraire mon frere!

In STAR TREK IV: The Voyage Home, Spock chastises McCoy for thinking man is the only intelligent animal on Earth and the crew then saves humpback whales because 300 years from now we are gonna need them to talk to the aliens who are wreaking havoc on the planet. So, Star Trek clearly implies you don`t have to build houses to be intelligent.

Exactly Blatto, we are beings of a higher intelligence capable of suppressing our instinctual desires and yet we don`t and rationalize it because it tastes so good!

We have an obligation because of our intelligence to take care of these animals and give them the same lives we have.

If you watched the video of the thing with antlers saving the thing drowning (I think one was a marmot) or maybe that was the monkey one. Either way you can see how when animals are taken care of and their basic needs are met they are free to use their brain for new purposes and achieve a higher intelligence than normal.

We should be pushing this upon the animals so we can have worldly animal peace, domesticate them and breed the aggression genes out of them.

Sometimes it`s necessary to abuse the rights of people or animals to achieve a better future for us all.

This is how these people survive. They kill for their food. Just like us. The supermarket fairy doesn`t appear and bring hotdogs and hamburgers, we kill cows and pigs for their meat to make them.

We kill things to continue to survive, plants animals, each other. It is just how it works.

klams dont be a hypocrite. you think a small village that kills an average of 2 whales a year - and has done this for centuries - should suddenly stop because its wrong or because its a whale. how about all the millions of seafood that are caught everyday, all the cows and chickens that are raised specifically to be slaughtered.

I say your being a hypocrite because this whales life is more important than the dust mites you vacuum up in hour house. the flies you swat, the spider you smash, and various other insects that you find disgusting. I bet if a mosquito landed on you to suck your blood you wont think twice about killing it. why dont you say."oh look he`s just trying to survive, his life is more valuable than mine, suck away mosquito." These bugs aren`t cute and cuddly so their lives aren`t worth protesting over. stop being a hypocrite and start condemning yourself for all the lives you`ve taken and was not even used to eat.

when you kill an animal that is intelligent enough to understand waht is going on...it starts to border on murder. Whales are NOT a source of food that can sustain any population and should not be hunted when many species numbers are dropping.

I only wish the whale had figured out what was going on, dove and came up on the boat.

at the very least I can say at least these people are REAL hunters and dont use machines that do all the work.

No, I`m not, the quotes were to represent what Klamz said. Everyone else confuses morals with laws.

If I`m stranded on an island with 1 other person and the only way to live would be kill him for food, is that illegal? Yes. Is it morally wrong? No. Survival of the fittest.

What I`m trying to say is the only reason why it`s viewed as wrong is because it`s illegal. There is nothing wrong with taking a life to continue to live.

How does this compare to rape, theft and murder? It`s the same level as how we mass kill other poultry and mammals to feed ourselves. They kill 1-2 whales a year. These whales will feed an entire village. Provide them with tools (they will craft with the bones), and shelter (the skins). Excuse the drat out of them for not being privileged enough to drive down to the market and by pork (also an intelligible creature) by the slice. This IS their market, except it`s more like their Walmart. The people you need to worry about are the ones going out there and mass killing the creatures, not even utilizing every part of its carcass, and driving them to extinction by over hunting.

Every gazelle that gets hunted by a lion knows exactly what is happening to them. When a whale gets a harpoon stuck in them, they know they`re being attacked. Hell, even an insect larvae that gets picked up by a person knows that it`s in danger. Intelligence shouldn`t dictate whether or not animals should be used as food. Pigs are much more intelligent than dogs, but we slaughter pigs by the millions. And if your local super market started selling butchered dogs, people would be up in arms.

What it really comes down to is that species are biologically hardwired to preserve their own kind. That`s why humans don`t run around killing each other for food. That whale those villagers killed will keep the entire village well fed for a long time. What`s wrong with that? These villagers aren`t the reason sperm whales are a threatened species. They`re threatened because of large scale whaling operations. Banning these people from whaling won`t do anything to help sper

For those like me, who wanted to know why a Sperm Whale is called a Sperm Whale...

Much of the bulk of a sperm whale`s enormous head is taken up by a barrel-shaped organ called the case. Inside the case is a clear, liquid oil that when cooled, hardens to resemble white paraffin.

Because whalers thought this stuff looked like whale sperm, they called it spermaceti and named the animal a sperm whale.

Spermaceti was used as lubricant and lamp fuel until around the end of the 19th century when petroleum products replaced it.

Hey we aren`t talking about a Huge Motorized Japanese Whaling vessel like you see on Whale Wars.
This a a Small Group of Pacific Islander who are hunting whales the same way there ancestors did, for food and supplies. Is it brutal? Yes, but I`m more worried about those men than the Whale.
