Mostly I think we got our asses kicked. If memory serves the only major victory we had was after the war was over and I think it was in New Orleans. I laughed a little bit.

The War of 1812 is not remembered well, since unlike other American wars (Revolution, Civil War, and the World Wars), "winning" and "losing" weren`t very well defined.

    Here`s an incredibly simplified version:

After the Revolution, the British were being dicks. Also, Americans wanted more land. So we declared war.

In the end, no land was claimed, and no real treaties were made to address why the US went to war. However, Americans felt that they had won a second war of independence by defending the country against British attacks. British North Americans (aka Canadians) felt that they had formed a national identity through defending their territory against US attacks. The British didn`t really care, since they were busy fighting Napoleon.

Native Americans largely sided with the British, and they were screwed over pretty heavily when the war was over.

Ultimately, it ushered in an era of peace between the US and Britain, and opened the Western US to expansion.

White house burned. Houses of Parliament intact. I`m going with 1-0 to the British.

Well done, Skine! Here in Canada, we like to think of it as the time Canada beat America in something other than hockey.

What? I was under the impression that the War of 1812 was a stalemate between America and Great Britain and if anyone lost, it was the Indians.

vv I agree M_Archer, you`ve summed it up nicely.

It`s one of the saddest wars in history, but helped Canada NOT become part of the USA, so that`s good!
