Submitted by: fancylad 6 years ago in Entertainment

The fact that these scenes were just off-the-cuff moments make them so much cooler. It"s in the hole!

"I know" wasn`t in the script!? Just one more reason why Harrison Ford is the BEST EVAR!

Can`t believe Kubrick allowed any ad lib. The guy was a total control freak, yet 3 of his films are listed here (Full Metal Jacket)

That scene from full metal jacket is just amazing every single time I watch it. That dude was an actual marine corp drill instructor before he acted.

I`m amazed at how many of these are virtually iconic now.

Commenting before I watch but... just about any scene of Bill Murray in Ghostbusters. Ok. Now I`ll watch.

@brassbull: Why would you use fruit in an instructional video as a technical advisor? Because you wouldn`t. Hence no mention.

@nettech98

"Initially he was intended to be only the technical advisor.[2] Kubrick changed his mind after Ermey put together an instructional tape, in which Ermey went on an extended hair-raising drill instructor tirade towards several extras, convincing Kubrick he was the right person for the role."

From the wikipedia article you linked to. Doesn`t mention fruit though.

Hauer made Bladerunner imo, it wouldn`t have been as good without him.

I wrote an essay on unscripted scenes, and how it`s important for actors to be able to improvise for my script writing course.
It`s the only paper I`ve ever gotten perfect on.

O_O Wow, can we maybe add a nsfw tag on this one? ^^; I put this on for the kids (cause I`m an idiot) and now the 4 year old is saying roostersucker. Ah well, it`s not like her Mom actually pays me to watch her.

@brassbull: What I had heard and just confirmed was that he was originally the technical advisor but was put into the role because he was so good.

Some of these seem too iconic to be true.

@Altaru Actually, the fact that he was an actual drill instructor kind of makes me believe the story even more. I`ll not be spreading it elsewhere until I can find a legit source, but it seems believable.

They neglected the one scene in one of the Indiana Jones movies where it was supposed to be an epic whip duel between the one guy and Indy. Turns out some people got a bit of food poisoning, including Ford, so when that scene came up, he just pulled his gun out, shot, and ran to the bathroom.

Also the scene in Return of the Jedi where slave Leia and Jabba are talking, Jabba sticks his tongue out and Leia turns her head to the side and utters a grunt of disgust. The grunt was completely involuntary and completely natural, though it was unscripted.

Brassbull:

He was an actual drill instructor, dude. For some reason I highly doubt that story.

The Clockwork Orange thing is funny. "Kubrick got the rights to the song immediately."

Also it is funny that these are some of the most memorable parts in some really great movies and they are because of the actors themselves.

The story I heard about Emery was that he was hired as the technical adviser for the Full Metal Jacket and when he realized how bad the actor hired to play the drill instructor was, he fired him and told Kubrick he would play the part himself. I don`t know if that if true or not but I remember hearing that before.

"Warriors, come out and play" was the most memorable part of that movie.

I read somewhere that irl Lee Ermey is a total pussycat and Kubrick didn`t wanna give him the roll because he didn`t think he could pull it off. So Ermey sent Kubrick a video of him screaming obscenities while his friends pelted him with various fruits. After watching the video Kubrick was sold.

#22 is not 40 Year Old Virgin, it`s Knocked Up. Although there is a very similar scene in 40 Year Old Virgin if I remember correctly.
