Ten 1000mW Blue Lasers (handheld) Focused to Burn!

Submitted by: WorldScott 6 years ago in Tech

What do you get when you point ten 1000mW (1 Watt) blue lasers (pocket size) on one spot? Awesome Burning Power!

"How is this not militarized yet?"

Look up space based laser (SBL) or similar projects which could be mounted on airplanes to shoot down missiles. The project did have a working prototype but it was canned before mass production at least ten years ago.

"@Corpsecrank please show me how to collimate multiple beams using a single mirror. A try trace, link or instructional would be fine. You may have a an important new optical innovation, especially if you can do it without massive loss.

Consider the magnifying glass. Used outside, at just the right angle and distance, you can take alot of spread out sunlight and convert it all into one spot. The same could be said with these lasers. Imagine 30 of them, all lining the edge of the magnifying glass. When turned on, they all hit a mirror which could narrow the cone and reverse the beams through the glass. Now the real problem is, how to get it to follow a straight path once it exits the glass.

Well, we`re a long way off destroying planets.

He definitely needs a blue lens filter for his next video.

I have only heard of two applicable techniques for coherent beam combining as you describe: side-by-side which increases beam width, but not intensity and filled-aperture techniques that utilise a diffraction grating and robs energy.

Coherent visible light, especially 473 nm blue lasers, are hard to combine because the short wavelength makes for really tight mechanical tolerances in the device and the phase differences between beams tend to mutually cancel and reduce the energy of the combined beam. In short, it`s no longer coherent.

10 lasers focused to one point like this is incorrect. The proper way to focus multiple beams into one is with a concave mirror. The light would actually be merged into one solid beam versus having 10 separate beams all contacting one point layered. And yes there is a big difference.

Sweet just realized this got posted. I tend to agree with comments about not being able to see the burning spot "blue smudge" but what I found appealing in this video was the array of 10 laser beams all bearing down on one spot. It is a bit like the Death Star as its lasers charge and fire.

congratulations, you used 10 lasers to do what 1 magnifying lens can do on a sunny day.

Wow! He has almost as much burning power there as a Bic lighter!

Why is the color f*cked up? No wait, don`t answer that. The guy who made the video thought it would look cool.

I want to see stuff being burned, not some blue smudges.

where do you think the tech to make this lazer pointer trickled down from?

So, as i see it, if you had a hundred of these, and they were in a ring, and were computer controlled, swiveled, and were able to focus at different points, and you mounted it on a plane or something - that`s like instant super-villan, right?

Meh, a Zippo will do the same thing and is much cheaper and easier to set up.
