this would only happen if you got the flu, otherwise you would smell it when you bring it to your mouth.

Being the kind of person who has a phobia of mould (yes, phobia, that`s what I said) I would NEVER let this happen! I don`t keep bread for more than 2 days unless it`s in the freezer and haven`t eaten any at all for 2 months because the freezer is full.

Think of it like this. If you didn`t taste it then it was actually good for you without you having to taste it. Also chances are that was the only spot and it is ok to simple pick the bad spot off of the bread and continue eating the samich. Penicillin is good stuff it just doesn`t taste so great on a samich.

You can`t just rip off the moldy bit and continue. The visible portion of the mold is the last thing to appear. Meanwhile, the stuff you can`t see has completely saturated the rest of the bread.

Meanwhile, wtf IAB. This is garbage.

I hate this too. Rarely happens but, just makes you wonder if you`ve eaten some without noticing it before.

GAG. I meticulously check my bread for this very reason. Even when it`s new. :( When I was pregnant, I couldn`t stand eating bread unless it was brand new because it `smelled` after a while. o_o;

Reminds me of a true story I heard once.

This guy was making his kids sandwiches before school. He had given them to the kids when he noticed a dead mouse was embedded in the bread. He didn`t want to traumatise his kids so he said nothing and just sat watching them eat whilst constant repressing his gag reflex. They never found the mouse`s tail.

You gotta think though, you`ve made it through half the sandwich, what`s the chances with the rest?

I get this often, because I leave a loaf out for a few days or so (already reduced/close to date) and then go to eat it. I can never decide if I`m unlucky because I`ve already eaten half a mouldy sarnie, or lucky because I`ve already eaten half of it and don`t need to go make another dinner. (as opposed to having just noticed prior to eating it, then having to make another dinner)

SarahofBorg: I agree with you about the bread, there is no good reason for bread to go bad unless people are careless enough to leave it out in room temp.

Actually, you can`t just rip off the moldy parts because mold has these long, practically invisible strings that grow throughout the piece of bread and can still make you sick. You can do it with cheese because the strings can`t penetrate it.

...that`s all I do with bread and cheese. Pick off the mouldy parts and throw those parts out...well, except for bleu cheese. That`s gotta stay mouldy.

Everyone thinks my kitchen is set up weird.
I have a bread box, but I use it for granola bars. Bread goes in the fridge. Butter is in the cupboard, and the butter knife stays with the butter (I wash it once a day. What`s the point in making another knife dirty if you`re using it for the same thing?)

Also, put the bread in the refrigerator, it`ll last MONTHS. In the winter I keep it out and it`ll last months as well. It`s all about the humidity. I`ve happily eaten bread 2 months past date. You can freeze it too, but only if it`s in a double-wrapped bag (like the kind the Pepperidge Farm bread comes in.)
Yeah, I know too much about bread mold.

Rip off the moldy part and keep going. Anyway, I`ve worked at a Pepperide Farm thrift store for years and I`ve learned how to detect even one spot of mold on a rack of dozens of loaves of bread usually just by smell alone. But for the average person I`d say ALWAYS smell the bag before taking out a slice. It`s usually an obvious smell.

Different mold smell totally different though. The whitish bread mold that Kalon talked about is hard to detect. The greenish and bluish molds, to me anyway, do have an earthy smell. Most bread molds are harmless. Like a cheese, just cut it off and keep eating.

I once left for a job out of country. I was gone for over a month. When I came back I realized I had left a loaf of bread in the cupboard. I examined it very closely and there was not a speck of mold on it. In fact, the bread didn`t even taste stale. It must have been baked in a very clean bakery to not have any mold spores floating around.

Exactly! Yeah... don`t eat things that smell like dirt.

Also when milk goes bad it *smells* like juice.

Really? I took pumpkin bread camping but left it in the cooler for the whole 3 day trip. When I got home me and my family ate half the loaf only to discover that every inch of it was covered in a thin (you almost cant see it) layer of white mold I ate 3 peices and NOBODY got sick. Bread mold is harmless, just cut it off and keep eating.

That used to always happen to me in college. I`d get that sick-to-my-stomach feeling, and then I`d wonder if it would be OK if I just peeled off the moldy part and kept eating.
