I`m a pretty laid back person when it comes to food saftey, but bread mold can be deadly. I wouldn`t mess with that with a 10 foot pole

i can smell mold from a mile away.. i don`t even look at bread i just smell it.. it has a very distinctive smell. kinda like dirt. if your bread smells like dirt dont eat it.. of course i learned this lesson by eating a piece of moldy bread once or 5 times

That used to always happen to me in college. I`d get that sick-to-my-stomach feeling, and then I`d wonder if it would be OK if I just peeled off the moldy part and kept eating.

Really? I took pumpkin bread camping but left it in the cooler for the whole 3 day trip. When I got home me and my family ate half the loaf only to discover that every inch of it was covered in a thin (you almost cant see it) layer of white mold I ate 3 peices and NOBODY got sick. Bread mold is harmless, just cut it off and keep eating.

I once left for a job out of country. I was gone for over a month. When I came back I realized I had left a loaf of bread in the cupboard. I examined it very closely and there was not a speck of mold on it. In fact, the bread didn`t even taste stale. It must have been baked in a very clean bakery to not have any mold spores floating around.

Different mold smell totally different though. The whitish bread mold that Kalon talked about is hard to detect. The greenish and bluish molds, to me anyway, do have an earthy smell. Most bread molds are harmless. Like a cheese, just cut it off and keep eating.

Rip off the moldy part and keep going. Anyway, I`ve worked at a Pepperide Farm thrift store for years and I`ve learned how to detect even one spot of mold on a rack of dozens of loaves of bread usually just by smell alone. But for the average person I`d say ALWAYS smell the bag before taking out a slice. It`s usually an obvious smell.

Also, put the bread in the refrigerator, it`ll last MONTHS. In the winter I keep it out and it`ll last months as well. It`s all about the humidity. I`ve happily eaten bread 2 months past date. You can freeze it too, but only if it`s in a double-wrapped bag (like the kind the Pepperidge Farm bread comes in.)
Yeah, I know too much about bread mold.

Everyone thinks my kitchen is set up weird.
I have a bread box, but I use it for granola bars. Bread goes in the fridge. Butter is in the cupboard, and the butter knife stays with the butter (I wash it once a day. What`s the point in making another knife dirty if you`re using it for the same thing?)

Actually, you can`t just rip off the moldy parts because mold has these long, practically invisible strings that grow throughout the piece of bread and can still make you sick. You can do it with cheese because the strings can`t penetrate it.

You gotta think though, you`ve made it through half the sandwich, what`s the chances with the rest?

I get this often, because I leave a loaf out for a few days or so (already reduced/close to date) and then go to eat it. I can never decide if I`m unlucky because I`ve already eaten half a mouldy sarnie, or lucky because I`ve already eaten half of it and don`t need to go make another dinner. (as opposed to having just noticed prior to eating it, then having to make another dinner)

Reminds me of a true story I heard once.

This guy was making his kids sandwiches before school. He had given them to the kids when he noticed a dead mouse was embedded in the bread. He didn`t want to traumatise his kids so he said nothing and just sat watching them eat whilst constant repressing his gag reflex. They never found the mouse`s tail.

You can`t just rip off the moldy bit and continue. The visible portion of the mold is the last thing to appear. Meanwhile, the stuff you can`t see has completely saturated the rest of the bread.

Meanwhile, wtf IAB. This is garbage.

Think of it like this. If you didn`t taste it then it was actually good for you without you having to taste it. Also chances are that was the only spot and it is ok to simple pick the bad spot off of the bread and continue eating the samich. Penicillin is good stuff it just doesn`t taste so great on a samich.

this would only happen if you got the flu, otherwise you would smell it when you bring it to your mouth.
