@carmium The rioters smashed into an old woman`s house while she was asleep and told her to get out of her own house, I`m pretty sure they`d have raided a temple given the chance :/

I doubt their temple is in much danger from protestors, unless they start stocking flat screen TVs, leather clothing, jewelry, computers, etc.

For all the bad the riots have brought, there are people who`ve shown their best throughout it too.
These folk are a good example.

They may have gathered at their place of worship, but I`ve no doubt they`ll carry that attitude home with them and to their places of work, communites etc.

Sure, so far it`s just a symbolic gesture.
In honesty, I hope that`s all it ever has to be.
It still has worth though.
Actions like this not only galvanise the community in question, they can strengthen the wills of others by showing a stand can be taken and weaken the resolve of rioters when they realise people will be ready to defend themselves and others.

Of course, knowing the typical response of UK law, there`ll already have been an officer warning against vigilante action, but that`s an outrage for another day.
Oh look. SOmeone trying to act tough on the internet. Take care racist guy.
Do you realise that baseless accusations of racism just make you look bad? You`re admitting that (i) you have no counter-argument and (ii) you`re low enough to play the race card because you know it`s an effective weapon and you`ve no moral objection to it.

Granted I don`t think anyone will go after their temple, I still say good for them. You don`t know what kind of crazy person or people might try to enter a house of worship just to break things and be stupid.
The swords are real. Part of the Sikh religion is that men must always carry steel, because they are the Warrior class. Usually, in modern times, that just means they always wear a little bracelet (if you see a guy in a turban, look for the bracelet and you know he is Sikh) but for fancy ceremonies like weddings they will bring out the swords. Every Sikh man has a sword, although they are ceremonial nowadays. The sword is called a Kirpan.
The size of the blade on a kirpan isn`t specified - a dagger is more usual because it`s more practical to carry around.

At least in the UK, it`s an actual bladed weapon and not a symbolic bracelet. The bracelet is another of the five things Sikhs carry/do, not a symbolic kirpan. The kirpan is an actual weapon.

The only thing that annoys me about it is that no-one else is allowed to carry a bladed weapon in the UK. I dislike religion being considered above the law.

All they have to do is stand there and their presence will be enough to put the rioters off, incase you haven`t noticed, the vast majority of them are cowards afraid of any real confrontation. They have no intentions in using violence unless its absolutely necessary. This is the kind of action the people who are criticisng them would be praising them for if they were defending their homes rather than their place of worship.

To the people suggesting bs like they deserve to die and what not, get your head out of your ass. I`m a Sikh and while I may not agree with everything my religion asks me to do, I do agree with the notion in our holy scriptures that we must only draw weapons to PROTECT never to harm. These guys are not going to kill anyone, nor harm without cause. They are most likely using it as a symbol to show that they`re willing to fight to protect. Even if they have to use them I can say with a certain degree of surety none of them will kill anyone. So shut up with your racist comments because you`re nothing without other races. If you don`t believe me check where your laptop was made, consider where your car was made and look at where your clothes are made. If you really are against other races then I suggest you start living on your own and making your own resources. Never mind the fact that "race" is a stupid concept, we`re all humans to begin with.

It`s sickening- The Riot police are having to protect the CHILDREN`S Hospital. These hooligans have no moral compass. If they wouldn`t hesitate to attack a building full of ill babies, why would they stop at something with significant religious meaning? Good for them, for protecting their own. I have no sympathy for any rioters that are injured trying to attack their building.

Jees guys, what is wrong with you all?? People are going round looting, beating people up and setting as much as they can on fire. These Sikhs are defending a building that is important to them, yesterday 3 people were killed defending their petrol station.

Also, a sword is a symbolic item in the Sikh faith meaning a to defend the faith.

@ShadowVamp

Those swords are curved so much because it makes them more effective for slicing attacks and more effective at cutting through certain types of armor. The curve also makes them better for mounted combat than a straight edged weapon.

Over the threat of possibly losing a material possession in this case a building, they resort to possible physical violence and maybe even murder.

These Sikhs deserve to die.

@Klamz: Over the threat of the destruction of a place they consider sacred, they resort to congregating peacefully on the steps, with perhaps eight in fifty holding something that could be used as a weapon. Seeing as how they`re standing still on the steps instead of going after the crowds, I`m going to guess that the weapons are likely more symbolic that they will fight if needed. The sticks that most of the eight are holding are no more dangerous than a cop`s nightstick, so if you don`t consider your local uniformed officer constantly willing to resort to murder, you shouldn`t make that mental leap here, either.

Also, the guy in the front with the two light shirts and the dark pants? Something looks wrong about his sword. I`ve never seen a blade curve so much if it`s that thin. I`m not sure it`s real.

Klamz-"Over the threat of possibly losing a material possession"

I realize that the concept of `personal possession` is becoming more and more foreign in this country (along with concept of `personal responsibility`) but it IS their possession, and they can choose to defend it or not.

What if we said, “Over the threat of Klamz being drawn, quartered and killled, they resort to possible physical violence and maybe even murder.”

I’m sure you’d be appalled if someone were to think so little of your life that they would not defend you.

And I can guarantee that those Sikhs think more of their temple than they do of your life.

It`s theirs, they have every right to defend it.

The looters have no right to destroy it, and they have no right to complain when they get the sheite beat out of them when they try. (I can see it now, `We were just being civilly dissobediant, and they beat us up. ARREST THEM!!!...

It is deplorable to see people willing to kill others for any reason. Add to that the fact that these people are defending a temple and are likely not right in the head... and I agree with the first part. It`s disgusting.

But no one deserves to die. Not even if they are zealots who are suggesting violence. Not until they actually attack anyone. THEN bring the noise.
