I like my films and music on nice shiny discs thank you very much, that way my rights to play them don`t spontaneously disappear cause someone went out of business or just decided I couldn`t use it any more.

Samsquanch, not everybody is purely spiritual being or naturally born rich douchebag, some people have to earn money because joy of art is zero calorie.
It`s nothing wrong (it`s very good) for artist to earn on their work, the actual problem the corporations try to gain too much control, over art, artists and consumers.

I`m a writer, and I`d happily do my craft for free. Most true artists would, because it`s not about the money, it`s about the expression of art, and displaying that expression for the public to see.
There are a number of artists who do their trade for free (Kim Mitchell, and Tragically Hip are a couple that pop to mind). They do it because they enjoy their art, and they get joy out of other people being entertained by their art.

I don`t shed a tear downloading music, movies, or TV shows. With music, the artist doesn`t make any money off the sale of the CD...it all goes into distributors` pockets. They make their money from concerts and merchandise. There are a few independent artists who make money directly, and I`m more than happy to support them (Bob Noxious being one of them that I`ll buy their albums from their site...because the money goes into his hands).
With movies, all the profits of the movie are made during it`s run through theatres. DVD rental and sales revenue is just gravy for the fat cats at MPAA and none of that profit goes into the pockets of the cast and crew who worked on the film...
With TV shows, all their money is earned from the sponsors of the show, and once it`s aired, the only people who profit from re-running the show are the television distributors.

Yes, tsiemens, you`re partially right about that. In Canada, it`d legal to duplicate media for the purpose of personal study. It`s also legal to share media, whether it`s original, or duplicated...for the same reason (personal study). Piracy is involved when the distributor charges a fee for the copy.

In Canada its still legal to download music and movies, to a point, so you can see if something is any good before you buy it

Klamz: Don`t wish for that, trust me, loosing everything is not as freeing as you might think it is. This is personal experience speaking here.

I`m not saying that you should covet everything you own or be obsessed with owning more. Loosing everything is not an experience you want to live through, you will mourn the loss of things that you took for granted.

Silly people who get aggravated and complain and think it`s the end of the world over material possessions. While it may be nice to have, you need to be able to give it up and cut away if you ever want to be able to live a happy life.

Ask yourself this, if everything was taken away from you, would you be okay?

Personally I`d feel happy like a huge burden was just lifted and dependence on material things for happiness was no longer needed.

Please free me.

DVD-Audio flopped and Blu-Ray sales are still anemic.

People do realize they are being hoodwinked into buying DRM crap that the media company, at any time they want, can turn off access to it and leave you with useless discs, the same goes for online rentals that have expiration dates and itunes crap.

Well damn, I agree with greenbasterd on something. You can`t compress very much without losing something.

mp3 at a high enough bitrate (and I don`t mean 128Kbps) and a decent codec is adequate if you don`t have good enough equipment to be able to tell the difference. I`ll use it on a cheap media player that I`m only using budget earbuds with, if I ever use such a thing. I have one somewhere, the sort of thing that you`d say "Oh dear, I left it on the train, never mind" about.

I`m not talking about £250 a foot cables here and all that more money than sense malarky. I use Goldring DR100 headphones, which are very good for their price but certainly not top of the range kit. I buy on CD and rip lossless - why care about saving a few gig when HDDs cost ~4p/GB?

i still buy cd`s but i convert them to .flac which is losless audio.. flac. can be converted back to the original file format.. which is basically .wav..
mp3`s dont even come closs to that quality. and if an audiophile setup. you can notuice every little scratch and blip on mp3`s.. plus you loose all background instrument.. there still there you just can tell what the hell it is.. all the seperate background sounds are mashed together. mp3 basically sounds like music enough to trick you. but it aint music

I don`t buy anything in digital that I can otherwise get a hard copy of. If there is no other way for me to get it? Ok, yeah sure, give me the 500 megs of data. Otherwise, put that sucker on a CD and put it in a store, so that people can have jobs to buy the content and products you`re selling.

The difference between physical and digital media, in this case, is that when you sell your physical media, it`s gone. You can`t use it anymore. In theory, you don`t have a copy of it you can still listen to. Also, used CDs are often of lesser quality because they have been used, and experienced some scratching. MP3s on the other hand, are just as good as the day you go them. And if they aren`t, you can restore them from their backup.

Not saying Foamy`s not right, just pointing this out.
