Maybe if your chemistry teacher showed you stuff like this, you would actually pay attention in class sometimes.

The uncool part is the use of Mercury(II) thiocyanate, as in "Yay, let`s burn mercury in front of children and let them enjoy the toxic fumes!"
Notice the blue gloves on the hands of this guy:

first, looks like the guy with longest fingernails` fingernails. Second, my chemistry teacher was awesome, he`d make water as a byproduct by lighting large hydrogen filled bubbles on fire, make salt by taking chlorine and introducing it to sodium, and drank sodium hydroxide mixed with hydrochloric acid. best teacher ever!!

That`s creepy and alien-looking. Or something.
But did you notice how the yammering in the background didn`t change throughout the whole thing? Obviously didn`t impress the crowd.

They used to sell these at fireworks stands when I was a kid. My dad used to yell at me for making burn spots on the new driveway.

@lauriloo really? I just got some this year....came free in my party block pack. I think it depends on your state as some have more dry weeds on the ground than others...we can`t get the cool ones like motors or rockets.

Cajun: Actually I didn`t have to look it up, my memory served me quite well, although I almost messed up and typed Thiocyanate instead of Thiocyanide.

Anyways this was an experiment my college chemistry teacher demonstrated for us.

Mercury Thiocyanide reaction, most likely. Not the sort of stuff you want to be around for very long, the fumes can be toxic.

Don`t they sell snake pellets anymore? Haven`t lit one of those in years. Every year 4th of July time, we got snakes, sparklers and caps to play with.

mrpuddle, according to the google search i just did to find out what the chemical reaction is here, it`s not the same as the fireworks...they use less poisonous chemicals for those (sugar and baking soda).

Anyone know whether the residue left behind is a hard solid or or is it really fragile just like an ash?
