There are only two things I know for certain: You can`t prove that God exists. You can`t prove God doesn`t exist.

So let`s all kill each other and let God sort it out.

"Can you effectively ban people from believing in him because you feel it inconveniences you? No. "

Nice attempt at vilification on your part but, as usual, this assertion doesn`t hold water. I never said anything about banning religion or impinging on your or anyone else`s right to worship who or what you please. To the contrary, I served to ensure that right. But never forget that your freedom of religion is also my freedom FROM religion. I don`t have to entertain your delusion nor respect it. And, until you prove otherwise, that is how I view religion: a socially acceptable delusion. that is my opinion and I have the right to it, also.

"Clearly, you have a unique view if you think we, America, have ever, EVER been at war to protect christianity."

Does that mean that it has never happened in the past in other countries? Do the Crusades or Inquisition mean anything to you? Have you so soon forgotten Serbia Or Northern Ireland? Clearly, you have a unique view if you have chosen to forget Christianity`s own sins.

But whether or not Christianity, which is not the only religion on earth that has ever existed, has ever been the cause of war in the U.S. is not the real question. I find it telling that you chose to ignore and attempt to deflect the entirety of my message by concentrating on one little point. Again I ask, if I couldn`t prove the existence of my unicorn and yet I asked all these things of you wouldn`t you want proof?.

It`s not about inconvenience. It`s about asking me to buy, literally, into your delusion before you prove its reality.

Clearly, you have a unique view if you think we, America, have ever, EVER been at war to protect christianity. Science is based on assuming things will continue to operate based on the guidelines we observe. Since you can`t do that with a person, as is opposed to a unicorn in a cage, it`s a very different situation. Can we prove God is real? Not to you. Can you effectively ban people from believing in him because you feel it inconveniences you? No.

"You don`t need evidence to prove something doesn`t exist. You do need evidence to prove something does exist.

However, Just because one has no evidence to support an existence does not necessarily mean that it doesn`t exist."

Gotta love that circular logic. It is the responsibility of the one making the claim that something exists to be able prove that claim. That`s just common sense.

Example:

Let`s say I make the claim that I have a purple unicorn captive and living in a cage in my back yard and that you need to give me 10% of your earnings for its upkeep. Further, if I suggest that the government can`t tax that 10%, that they need to send your children to war to defend my unicorn and that everyone must worship it and give it unquestioning respect, socially, wouldn`t you want me to prove its existence?

... and if I wouldn`t - or couldn`t - produce that proof, would you still go along with it?

@Ultimakewl,
You`re sorta right. You don`t need evidence to prove something doesn`t exist. You do need evidence to prove something does exist.

However, Just because one has no evidence to support an existence does not necessarily mean that it doesn`t exist.

The problem is, one cannot effectively prove the existence of a metaphysical anything through the scientific method. You can`t observe it. You can`t make any valid predictions about it. You can`t test the hypotheses.
You`re left with no evidence to support the existence of the metaphysical... but that doesn`t mean it doesn`t exist.
What it *does* mean is that one cannot assume that it *does* exist in the scientific endeavor. But one also cannot assume that it *doesn`t* exist in the scientific endeavor, because no one knows for sure.

Religious folks,

If you`re a Christian you`re an atheist in regards to Allah. If you`re a Jew you`re an atheist in regards to the Buddha. If you`re a Zoroastrian you`re an atheist in regards to Yahweh.

Here is your ultimate truth:

We are, you and I both, atheists. Bare with me, here.

---------
a·the·ist
   [ey-thee-ist]
noun
a person who denies or disbelieves the existence of a supreme being or beings.
---------

We rationalists/atheists/anti-theists simply believe in one less deity than you do.

Welcome to the club.

I am always baffled by theists who say that they believe in god because god easily explains creation or death. Because any number of equally ridiculous explanations does the job easily. Just because its an explanation doesnt mean its the explanation.

Ive recently decided to stop believing in God at all for a very simple reason: There is not verifiable evidence he exists at all. I dont want to believe in something if there is no reason to believe in it, and no evidence that thing exists

Ok, here`s whats going to happen. Do you remember anything from before you were born? no?
Ok, that`s what`s going to happen to you when you die. You have no brain to imprint memory or get sensory information.
So make the best of the time you have to live, because it wont last. And you`re going to die eventually so you might as well try to stop the person trying to rape that random girl on the street, why the drat not. Might work, or you die a few years earlier doing what you would be proud of instead of regretting it at your deathbed.
And if you want mystical experiences and see things you can`t explain, smoke dmt or take other psychedelia. If you want to numb away your fears and act like a retard, drink. Want to spend some time contemplating whatever and feel even simple things are fantastic, smoke some cannabis.
If you like putting your penis into things or getting things up your vagina, go drat.
And if you want another being to be out here wondering wtf is going

@sai20 the debate really isn`t important because it becomes arguing for the sake of arguing. People have been arguing the same thing forever with no progress for either side. The fact that some people are religious doesn`t halt the advancement of science. I know you`re going to bring up the dark ages. Who cares. Why don`t we argue about slavery or killing Native American`s? It`s more recent than the Crusades. If someone believes in a specific god or any higher being who are you to tell them they can`t?

Almost everyone is a hypocrite when it comes to other people`s beliefs. Gay`s should be able to get married but people shouldn`t be able to be religous without knowing how stupid they are, right? I should be allowed to my religion without any oppression, but other`s need to know how wrong they are. These arguments don`t make sense. Let people follow their beliefs no matter what they are unless they harm society.

theres no evidence unicorns existed but theres no evidence they didnt either but no one believes in unicorns

thats kinda how it works. you make a claim and provide evidence to support that claim.
its not you make a claim and wait for people to provide evidence to dispute your claim.

pierce illustrated why there is religion. humanity`s thirst for answers

its not enough that we exist, we need to know why and because there is no way of knowing why or how it must be a super being instead of just a mystery

thats exactly why when you goto ancient civilizations they have gods that control weather and crops and sickness, because they didnt know how that all worked so it must have been magic.

just because we dont understand something does not mean it is the work of a greater being

i dont know how to make a computer but that doesnt mean that the people that do know how are gods

@ggolbez, that is 99.999999% of humanity and anyone who believes otherwise is largely delluding themselves.

I have a deep respect for people who are spiritual and have true faith amd a belief in something in the abscense of evidence. As long as they`re not smug about it. A belief in God is backed by as much emperical evidence as a belief in no god...exactly none.

Substituting belief for knowledge is a dangerous thing. "How did we get here? The answer is God." No, the answer is you don`t know, but you believe that God created us. We cannot know unless we created a time machine and went back into the past.

I hear this tired tripe, and I begin to think that we`re slipping back into the Dark Ages. I believe there is a God, and I believe that he set things in motion that wound up giving us the universe we live in today. We evolved (or something) from lesser beings, and the universe probably expanded from a singularity in an event known as the Big Bang. To sit there smugly and say "God did it" is lazy, stupid, and above all, an insult to scientists everywhere who put countless time in to try to understand what is around us.

@greenbasterd, Thank you. The book wasn`t made to cater to the bible thumpers, but more like the people who a) don`t believe in an almighty, and b) those that aren`t already sided, and want a fresh perspective. Depending on your religion, the bible definitely doesn`t `agree` to every persons beliefs all around the world.

Penn has a really good point. Just because most people on the this planet simple can`t comprehend something as complex as the beginning of the universe, that doesn`t mean the answer lies in a specific set of beliefs dictated by a book written 2000 years ago. I am yet to see any organised religion which gives irrefutable truth that it alone is the one true and correct religion, therefore the logical assumption to make is that none of them are right.

As for the existence of a higher being... in my opinion, it has more plausibility that something as specific as what is written in the Bible or the Qur`an, but it`s the easy way out. Science has provided ample theories, and the evolution of life is certainly understood, and locked in very solid evidence - surely these are better than what is essentially a collection of stories? I`m sure a scientist could provide Piers with a multitude of explanations, the fact that he`s not intelligent enough to understand doesn`t make it wrong.

The lack of knowing is perhaps the excitement of Atheism. Religious people have a book that explains to them who God is, how he thinks, what he looks like and they seem to revel in their knowledge. Yet they seem to forget their books were written by man.
Can`t science and discovery be God? Every new scientific advancement or understanding opens an Atheists eyes a bit more. I doubt we`ll ever see outside the universe but if we could then perhaps we might see God.

Well, it was a strawman. Science has provided tons of explanations, just none concerning what happens with what we would consider our souls after we die. Religion usually considers this a weakness while many of us consider it a strength. Admitting that you don`t know is the first step to finding to truth. So, agree to disagree.
