No Tip For You! [PIC]

Having a tip-based job at a time like this has to suck something awful.

Here in the States, if you can`t afford to at least tip 10%, then you can`t afford to go out to eat. Especially at MIMI`S.

It`s just different for different countries, why is that so hard for people to understand?
We don`t tip here in Australia ether, well I will only tip if the person gives out of the ordinary service. But in America they need tips because they get paid so low, but it`s different here. My ex used to work as a waiter and he was paid $28/h, he didn`t need tips. It`s not about us being "cheap f*cks", it`s just tips are not relied upon here, it`s a bonus if you do a good job.

I paid my way through college as a server so I didn`t work for nothing cause in the US we aren`t tightwads and it`s considered politeness unless service was not good. I`ve only been stiffed a few times cause I busted ass you should try it sometime. As for people who never tip YOU ARE REMEMBERED AND TALKED ABOUT BY ALL SERVERS!

Seriously? You bastards would begrudge a couple bucks? Milk of human kindness just oozes out of some people.

There will come a time, for everyone, when you will have to depend on another person`s generosity, at least once. Remember this.

Total lack of empathy...

I can`t believe that servers remeber the tips, you should be concentrating on the quality of the service, only through that will you get a tip. Bad days is bull, when I worked in a restraunt, I could be completely grumpy by the kitchen but as soon as I walked out into the seating area I smiled. I wouldn`t tip a mooody or bad mannered person, so why shuld anyne expect that? Tips aren`t mandatory, when the server gives you something extra you give them extra money, simple.
Subushie you don`t seem like a person I would tip, so maybe you should work on your service instead of presuming them a tight.

What I find amusing is Subushie has this written when you click on his name -

try my hardest to love the world, but sometimes my hardest isn`t enough.

and then we have the following -

specially because you seem like a ignorant teenager bitch(Which are my favorite targets) keep tossing that hair sweetheart; enjoy your rat feces.

I can honestly say if that`s an example of trying `your hardest` then no wonder your bitter about not getting tipped, probably doesn`t happen too often. Last time I eat at Nuvolari`s, thats for sure.

Subushie is totally right. Servers remember good tippers and bad tippers. And, they tell each other who has screwed them on a tip. And, believe me, really nasty stuff will happen to your food if you are pegged as a bad tipper. So, if you don`t tip and you don`t want spit, snot, or worse in your food, I would recommend only visiting a restaurant once or twice and then never going back. Because your food will get fu*#@ up if you keep going back.

To you `tards who don`t tip...imagine what menu prices would be if each server was getting paid at least minimum wage. Now also consider that on a busy shift, there could be anywhere from 15-25 servers. Do the math and see the extra expenses. If the service sucks, yeah, tip appropriately and let management know what`s up.

You should always expect to leave a tip.

PERIOD

not only if the service is good, or if the meal was good. You sometimes need to put yourselves in other peoples shoes; and realize that some people have bad-days just like you do. If you have a bad day, you don`t get paid less for it.

If the server is bad; he/she will get fired. Not leaving a tip is drated up and makes you a prick. I hope someone spits in your food if you don`t

P.S. I have sullied many meals when customers return after jipping me previously. I never forget. Remember that next time you decide not to leave a tip ;)

You shouldnt have to tip. It shouldnt be mandatory. The definition of Tip is that you are given extra for the extraordinary amount of service you provided. Im sorry your employer wants me to pick up their slack in regards to your paycheck. Learn how to be attentive to my table, remember to ask if I need a refill, and you`ll get your tip. Take longer than 5 minutes to come check up and see if I`m content, and you get poo. Tips are a privilege, not a god given right. Let the flames begin!

I don`t care if you think you shouldn`t have to leave a tip. In the US, that`s the system we have, and if we all abide by the system, everyone benefits. Menu prices are lower because the employer doesn`t have to pay a full wage. Customers aren`t forced to pay for crappy service. If they get bad service, they should leave a crap tip or no tip at all. Servers who give bad service deserve it. Servers who work hard make decent money in a short period of time. But to say you aren`t going to tip just because you feel like you shouldn`t have to, while knowing that the system we have expects you to pay for the service you get, is flat out theft. Servers choose this job & should expect bad tips for bad service. At the same time, customers choose to eat in the restaurant, and should know that they are expected to pay the server for their good service. If the server doesn`t like it, they can get a bother job. If the customer doesn`t like it, they can eat at home.

Tipping is like commission, you do your job well you get the sale (tip), you suck you don`t get the sale (tip). To say it`s owed to you is idiotic. If you do your job there is nothing to worry about, if you don`t then look for another profession.

Just because you worked as a server does not mean you`re a professional or oracle of information. I recently had a bad experience with service and offered to serve them... my ass.

Meh it was just an example of cultural differences.

Here`s what ya get when it`s not normal to tip. I was in Montreal and went to an area resurant I waited probably an hour for the dinner because they have no motivation to get a meal out quick. I looked around me and it was the same for all the locals they`re used to it of course though all brough cards or something to do while waiting for food. I got to stare at the table and other peoples food. Yes I still tipped.

Everyone here is saying "boohoo we don`t get minimum wage like everyone else but 2$/h". Let`s say you pay minimum wage (e.g. 10$). That makes 8$/h more you have to pay your waiter. If a waiter dishes out about 50 meals/h that would be 16cents/dish extra you have to pay. Even if you account for income tax it wouldn`t make the meals a lot more expensive.

Yeah, sure, in a perfect world employers would pay a full wage and tipping wouldn`t survive as a system. But you know what? That`s now how it is. Restaurant employees rely on tips to make a living wage, and if they don`t get them, they don`t eat. It`s as simple as that.

Not tipping for bad service is one thing--it`s socially acceptable and the waitress can control it. But just not tipping *ever* is ignorant and misguided. You`re gonna blame and punish the waitress for the system of which she is a victim? Really? How exactly is that fair?

Ishil you are a doucccccheeeeeee. i wait tables to put myself through grad school. Also we get paid $2.13 an hour, a standard wage for all servers, which most of goes towards taxes. My bi-monthly pay check equals to about $20 each time. I make my money off tips. ALSO we tip our bus boys, hosts, and bartenders 3% of our total sales. So basically.... if a table stiffs you for no reason, you pretty much paid to be their bitchh. ALWAYS tip 20% for good service!!!!

Also I must agree with myrtheus on the age old argument that waiters are paid only 2$ per hour and minimum wage, what everybody else working in a similar jobs in the restaurant gets is what 10$?

So let`s say we get rid of tipping altogether and pay waiters like normal employees. They would be the first to protest because they make way more if they get tips.

I said that even in Germany with lower tipping expectations a good waiter/waitress can make 30€/h on a 4€/h salary.
My point is that in Canada (at least Québec where I am they think 20% is "normal") they expect about twice the percentage with the prices being about the same as in Germany just in $ (or 50% more in $ than €).
That is if their expectations correlate with reality they should be getting around 60$/h in tips, which I find is a bit too much, I don`t think most waiters are worth that much.

I like to leave a really bad tip if the service was particularly bad. Waitresses hate a bad tip worse than no tip at all. I also tip very well if the service was good. Think of it as a way to get things the way you want them. Waitresses will remember you and how you tip and they will take better care of you if they know you`re a good tipper.

Too cheap? Most service from waitresses suck, even at the expensive restaurants. I hate tipping. In America I was told you had to tip since waitresses do not get paid as much. My response is they should petition to get the pay at an equal rate and drop tipping.

They will not do this as they can make over $200 a night in some places and probably claim a tenth of that. I had an ex-girlfriend do that. This is why waitresses get testy when you do not tip them. They get paid enough. Do not let them tell you that they do not.

I don`t see why I need to pay extra just because someone brought me my food and refilled a cup. If they did it topless... then we can talk.

Never knew Americans got so worked up over tipping. I understand the concept, if a waiter has been particularly good, then you say thanks by tipping them... but what really annoys me is when you receive a bill with a 10% tip included, or you`re paying by card and it asks if you want to add a tip - why would I just give extra money to the faceless person running the business?

If American workers aren`t paid enough, then they should be paid more. Why should we be expected to give extra money to some snooty, rude waiter because he thinks he is entitled to it?

I call bull on "If you don`t have enough money to tip, then you don`t have enough money to eat out."

A tip should be something EXTRA for the worker if they have done above and beyond their duty. Not something they need to rely on to pay their bills. Employers should step up and pay PROPER wages! Cut out tips altogether (unless you feel like giving a little extra to that person) and get into 2011 and pay a PROPER WAGE. Ugh american waging system makes me so angry >:(

If anybody lives in the USA and doesn`t tip servers, then you should be ashamed. You know servers work for tips and that the cost of service is not included in the meal. I`m sorry if you don`t like that, because you are cheap, but that`s the way the system is set up. If you are British and go to the States, then please tip, because you are an embarrassment to your country if you don`t. When in England, I don`t overtip, because the service sucks and I also know of restaurants that don`t pass on tips on credit cards to the servers, which should be illegal.

I`m a waiter. If someone gives you good service, tip 15-20 percent. Just tipping a couple of bucks on a big meal, or not tipping at all, is ridiculous if you`re in America. If someone gives you bad service and they`re not even trying, don`t tip them. If someone is giving you ok service and they`re busy, or they`re just giving you great service, tip them well.

You pay our salary, whether you like it or not, the responsibility is yours if we`re doing our job well.

You want the restaurant to pay us more instead? Well, if they did, then you`d be paying ALOT more for your food. The price you pay on your meal now is paying for the kitchen and bussers time, and the cost of the food. The tip pays for the service you receive.

It comes down to whether you`re cheap or not. If you can`t afford to tip, you can`t afford to eat out. Go eat at a fast food place or go to the store.

That must be why the prices at McD`s are so exorbitant. It`s not like prices are defined by the consumer based on what they`re willing to pay for any given good or service.

@LazyMe484

In America, a server`s wages are their tips. They usually work for about 2.25-2.75 an hour, which gets eaten by taxes. It helps keep overhead costs down for the restaurant so they can over more reasonable prices on their cheaply produced crap. We have a lot of cookie cutter, "casual dining" restaurants that have sort of ruined the markets for regular restaurants. So to compete they have to do what the cookie cutters do.

ANYWAY... if you can`t afford to tip you can`t afford to eat out. Budget it in. Don`t get the 15 dollar entree, get the 12 and tip 2 dollars and save yourself a buck.

I`ll be damned if society expects me to tip anything at all for bad service.

I have no problem with tipping something for good service, especially if I can see that the establishment is honestly trying their best.

But on the flip side, an establishment that has bad, overpriced food, lousy waiters, that tries to squeeze you at every corner and then automatically applies a 10% tip to their own bill - I can`t stand. They can burn in the fires of oblivion.

To those saying businesses should pay more so we could eliminate tipping:

Consider that if they pay servers more, the prices will go up accordingly. With tipping, you at least have the ability to tip less for bad service. In the long run, I think tipping is better for the customer, not just the wait staff.

I`m also from Europe which makes me in General a bit skeptical about the tipping system in US & Canada. I would still consider this quite rude to just not leave a tip on a meal, except if the service wasn`t good (which doesn`t seem to be the case here).

Nevertheless there are some really big entitlement issues with North American waiters. With tips I`m sure most waiters make more than minimum wage and way more than what they would get on a supply and demand basis. My roommate in college in Germany used to get 4€/hour, but she said the tips were good enough that she made 30€/hour. And this is in Germany where people generally tip around 0% bad, 5% normal, 10% good service.

A cleaning lady on the other hand often get`s paid a lot less and her job is in my point of view more physically and technically demanding. Her wage is determined by supply and demand and not by some rules that were made up by waiters themselves to make people feel bad about giving a

Wow, what an elitist... What essential service do you provide to society that lets you judge someone for being a lowly server? Obviously you haven`t had to look for a job in the last 3 years, as it`s near impossible to find anything at entry level. In addition, lots of states allow payment of below minimum wage to servers because it is the custom here to tip ($2.13/hr in KS for example.) Tipping is the culture in America, and to not tip on good service is equivalent to theft in the opinion of every server out there.

If you can`t afford to tip, then eat at McDonalds.

The economy is crap? So start working at Walmart if it will shut you the drat up.

I always tip. Usually depending on service. Five if you`re really good, one dollar if I hate you. It`s a very strange system but it works pretty well. Most land in the middle.

Without a doubt the busboy and cooks should definitely earn more.

Where I was a waiter, I was also the busboy. So not only did I deal with the good/ass-hole customers, I had to dive into the same scum and vile you mentioned. I know where you`re coming from, and agree completely.

I always tip well, poor or not >> I gave someone a 20% tip for being cute, and funny, he deserved it... Only didn`t tip once because there was no service, literally. Got sat down and a cup of coffee than didn`t see her for half an hour. Wasn`t even busy.

@Ripper398 - Now now, the unsung hero of the restaurant scene is the bus boy--some of us don`t even get tips. We have to dive hands-first into disgusting mixtures of ketchup, syrup, half-digested chicken and human feces, get it all cleaned up in a matter of seconds, and then dive into another mess just as bad. Whenever something gross happens-- "oh, call the bus boy." whenever something needs to be lifted or broken or cleaned--"oh, grab the bus boy" that, ON TOP of what we were already doing.

...like, for example, the dishes. The unending torrential downpour of dishes.

All this, making only minimum wage. The waitresses easily brought home three times what I made on any given night, and they weren`t sweat-drenched, dehydrated and covered in food bits like I was.

"Get another job." Fu ck you, the economy is crap, you idiots. Their not handing jobs out on a street corner (well, except pimps)

Waiters and Waitresses get a percentage of their paycheck jacked because of the fact the government expects you to tip. Not all jobs have this problem mind you, but the majority of them do.

I think it`s bullsh*t that they have to put up with your needy whiny asses, your stupid kids throwing cheerios all over the floor, and then having to come back and check on you while over hearing about how your gay uncle diddled your penis while you were sleeping one night (explaining why your a tight ass and don`t use the tip anymore).

IMO get rid of tipping and just make the restaurants pay their servers a proper minimum wage (maybe even add in some commission).

If you are paid below minimum wage then get another job, don`t expect other people to make up the difference out of their own wages. Why the drat should I or anyone else pay you so your employer doesn`t have to?

I only tip when the service is good. That`s the point of tipping. You tip in thanks to good service. When it`s great service, I tip a lot. I once tipped over 100% at a Steak N Shake and the manager had to come to the register to verify that I wanted to tip that much. I`m bragging about having the money to tip big, but when someone is due for their efforts you nut up and pay your respects. No pun intended.

As a customer we are already paying inflated prices for food. $10 for $0.50 worth of pasta. Oh but the atmosphere. Well the atmosphere isn`t what we expect when we get some bitch/idiot as a server. It`s up to the business to pay the decent salary, the market value. I will tip if the service is good or if I can afford it. This entitlement crap is getting out of hand.

Amazing that people expect tips. The main argument, don`t go to the place then if you cannot afford a tip. Sure, then business dries up and you are out of a job, awesome advice. Or the secondary argument, it`s part of our salary. What? You choose to work as a server, nobody is forcing you to work there. If they pay crappy then quit, work somewhere else where they pay more.

I hate people who whine about getting bad tips. Truly, truly hate them.

After tip-out, taxes, even on a completely horrible shift add up your minimum wage for tip out employees and your tips and you`re still making 10+ MINIMUM!!!!!!!

You take the bad with the good and if it`s more bad then good, get another job.

you don`t get it because your from the us kris. In the uk we only get tips like the last poster said, as a gesture of good will. They may or may not leave a tip. In the US it seems people are EXPECTED to leave a tip just because they are eating out and its deemed rude of them not to.
