National Guard Almost Drown During Hurricane Irene

Submitted by: fancylad 6 years ago in Misc

The fact that these jeeps traveled as far as they did underwater was pretty impressive... until it became stupid.

"You guys are stupid."

Calling them stupid when the only thing you`re doing to prove yourself a better man then those fail soldiers is filming the whole thing while atop a bridge. Smart move Chad.

Definitely an LMTV, really amazing vehicles. This does far exceed the suggested water fording depth in these lol I can`t remember the exact recommended depth in inches but it is much less than that. The engine is under the seats and actuly sits pretty low so hopefully they didn`t cut the engine off because snorkel or not as soon as that exhaust pressure is lost water will head straight up the exhaust and fill up the motor with water.

SlothOfDoom: I stand corrected, Those were LMTVs.

That give everyone a clue as to just how high the water was.

"How is that possible?"
"It`s the Army, Bro"

That`s why the Army should stick to doing Army stuff, not Navy stuff.

I wouldn`t have gone in solely as that water is just ripe with nasty organisms and pollutants.

I like how they don`t bother to offer any help- just talk for 3 minutes about how stupid they were. Granted, it was stupid, but hey maybe they could still use a hand.

"How is this possible"

The air intake for the engine is above the water. The black tube in between the cab and the trailer is for the engine to pull in air. They should have been ok until the water got into it.

Actually, Army vehicles aren`t supposed to be that submerged in water. If the water gets up to about the bottom of the vehicle, you have to modify your vehicle for water travel, which works with water only a little bit higher, about half-way up the door. Although I`m mentioning this for HMMWV as an example, I`m not sure what a 5 ton is capable of- Probably not as much, since it`s not designed to be submerged in water at all, except the massive wheels which set the ride height so high you don`t normally have to worry about water.

Deuce and a half(s) or maybe 5 tons. But not jeeps or humvees. Too bad the water didn`t stay just a tad bit shallower there, they almost made it!

Seems like they ALMOST made it. No harm done really, I`m sure the trucks weren`t damaged at all.

I have to say that "almost drown" is over the top. They were doing their job, things got tricky, and they got out of it. Nobody got close to drowning. Another classic fail on the description.

@ RobSwindol "It doesn`t matter if the exhaust is underwater"
Quite right, I saw a lot of these guys (the black snorkel) on cars when I was in South America. As long as that snorkel does not get water in it it will run with water completely covering the car.

They did exactly as they were supposed to do. If the they didnt start floating, they would have easily continued.

That was not a stupid thing, it was their job and they are trained for it.

That`s not the exhaust you nimrod. That`s the intake. It doesn`t matter if the exhaust is underwater... which it is.

And to answer your question, Mr. Exhaust. Yes, they are that stupid. They are the National Guard. And the reason why that have a guy that can`t swim is because unlike the Marine Corps, where you must pass swim qualification to graduate boot camp, these guys are National Guard.

I`m betting they got a tow rope and pulled those HUMVEES, not jeeps, out with the one that made it across. These vehicles are made to be waterproof, up to a point, they apparently didn`t follow the successful HUMVEES path.

The National Guard does train for high water rescue, these guys need a refresher course though.
