    Why not?

"I think he will find this as an international thing."

Never driven on a highway/freeway with one of these lanes myself. I assume this is because our freeway`s have more exits/entrances than their M1 does enabling the ambulance to simply drive the wrong way from the entrance ahead of the accident.

He`s not a knob. Everyone stopped in the emergency lane is a knob. Imagine if someone you cared about was in a horrible accident and died because the ambulance couldn`t reach them in time.

Pointing out people`s idiocy is a great way to break them of it.

Couldn’t the emergency vehicles just go on the opposite side of the M1, against traffic or not like they do everywhere else in the world when they cannot reach the crash scene. Helicopters work too.

their problem is the design of the shoulder isn’t differentiated enough, aside from that solid white line. you need to add strips or have it slightly sunken and smooth so people can see they’ll poo bricks if they go on it.

Don`t get me wrong I understand his reasoning behind doing it, but going up to someone and ramming a camera in their face being a self righteous bell doesn`t do anything. People in the car will be thinking "god what a knob" instead of "hmm yeah that guy`s right i`ll remember that in future". He should just go and inform them of their mistake instead of being a dick about it.

These people are in the wrong to such an extent that they could be a major contributing factor in someone`s DEATH.

And for what? A few minutes off their drive to work or home?

If anything, there need to be MORE people like this guy to call these people out for being f*cking morons.

And if anyone died in the accident because the EMT`s couldn`t get there in time, they should all be charged with negligent manslaughter.

Public shaming is a great way to make people accountable and perhaps think about their actions. Also, the embarrassment of being called out when you clearly know what you`re doing is wrong may make you think twice about doing it again. I liked the way he confronted them in a non-aggressive way and I found him fun and funny to watch.

Good for him. I`ve heard the M-highways in Britain can be a nightmare. Here in Chicago, we had problems with people either not moving for an ambulance or outright cutting them off - until they posted a $500 fine, which they enforced. Problem solved. I hope they ticked the hell out of those people.

While it is wrong what they have done, one of the traffic calming scheme that is being brought into place in Britain is the use of the hard shoulder during peak traffic flow to add an extra lane. However this wasn`t one of those times so good on him for doing this.

You do seee this in traffic jams near Airports, as people panic and think they`ll miss their flight. I saw it at Heathrow about 2 months ago, as I too was panicking and thinking I was gonna miss my flight. I didn`t, but it was farking close and involved much running.

It doesn`t matter too much from a practicality point of view that they`re blocking the lane. Cops will just double back from the next junction up to get at the accident and despatch a couple of bike cops to book everyone that`s on the hard shoulder.

It`s differentiated plenty. Anyone who doesn`t know what that solid white line on the motorway means needs to have their licence revoked.

When it comes to such a crucial activity as getting a gravely injured person to hospital without delay, it`s foolish to shut off one possible route of travel and rely only on a reduced number of others.

Helicopters are not always available. Using the other side of the motorway, or coming at the accident from the opposite direction, may involve detour: even if it`s only a detour of seconds, it may still cost lives.

Above all, the ambulance may start down the hard shoulder, unaware that it is blocked by selfish people up ahead, and wind up trapped, or stuck waiting for those causing the obstruction to maneuver out of the way.

It is ugly, dangerous, destructive selfishness, and this man is right to compare it to the riots: the same mentality causes both.

Emergency services can very well come from the next junction and for instance driving against traffic - but that is not the point, those people shouldn`t be in the lane as it can be potentially life threatening, I can`t stand people that will drive like arrogant pricks just so that they save 1-2 minutes on their commute.

You are not allowed on the Moterway until you have a full UK license. You know what the hard shoulder is and it`s simply not possible to make that mistake after passing your driving tests (theory & main)
To the people who said they can go down the other way, yes true but you can`t just start going 70mph down the wrong way of a moterway you`ll hit a oncoming car. You need to wait for the road to be empty which takes time. Also what if cars could still creep by one at a time, it still won`t be empty. And as someone else pointed out what if they start up the hard shoulder find it blocked and gridlocked traffic they can`t turn around and will have to reverse all the way back costing more time which could be someone dieing.

My point is I`m from England and people don`t like being proved wrong, ESPECIALLY when it comes to driving, and even more so when there`s a camera rammed in your face to capture your mistake. I can guarantee a lot of those drivers were annoyed more at him than their own mistake. I`m not defending those drivers` actions but this isn`t quite the right way to go about it. And to have some idiot calling me a self entitled a-hole when he knows nothing about me is plain childish.
