dragonflies are awsome. their the only living things that can truly hover or fly in any direction, and their wings produce lift even on the upswing. something man cannot duplicate with machines yet.

Several years ago, I was in my backyard reaching for my lighter with a cigarette in the other hand. When I went came back to the cigarette with my lighter, I noticed that a dragonfly was sitting on the edge of the cigarette in my hand. Just standing there. Staring at me. I put the lighter down and we starred back and forth at each other for a full minute before s/he flew off. It was the last cigarette I ever had.

@Lazy, dragonflies do indeed feel pain. It`s not brain matter that makes you feel pain, it`s your nerves/nervous systems.

"I doubt dragonflies feel pain. Not enough brain matter. But what do I know..."

Insects in general feel pain. Pain is a MUST to be a working body. Without it, you would (or said animal, insect) not know that your body is in danger. Pain is not only a reaction, but an early warning system.

People just like to say insects do not feel pain to justify the way we treat them. Dont believe me? Press down on any insects leg lightly, just enough to hold it there. It tries to escape, but will eventually give up. Now do the same thing, but with your nail, with increasing pressure, notice how the insect begins to use behavior that depicts panic. think of if you were to cut or slowly pull the leg off. Think of how the insect reacts. They feel pain. I just dont think they go into shock like we do.

Panicdevil - "It`s not brain matter that makes you feel pain, it`s your nerves/nervous systems."
Nervous system transmits signals to the brain for interpretation. Like a telegraph line. The brain decides if it`s bad pain or that good, sexy kind of pain.

As for whether an insect feels pain - I don`t really care.

The blue colouration is usually a male thing in aeshna species, can`t see any cerci, but maybe Raicuparta knows something I don`t..

As for hoverflies - impressive fliers - dragonflys catch and eat them.

    Following on from that logic..

I gave company to a dying dragonfly once, and saw it die. The amazing thing is that its eyes had this `deep` hologram appearance to them, and the instant it died, that glazed over and became just a solid grey. I thought that was quite a surprising effect, i guess even bug eyes have a life to them.
