robosnitz-"to date 174 people dead, 1,193 still missing."

Excuse me, but please provide a cite for these numbers.

The latest I`ve been able to locate is : 26 deade, 8 missing. (& that`s including Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and Haiti)

And of those dead `attributed` to Irene:
2 surfers (hint: surfing in hurricane = stupid)
1 swimmer (hint: swimming in hurricane also = stupid)
1 kid due to parent not knowing how to proceed through intersection with lights out.
1 guy killed by tree while trying to cut up a fallen tree DURING THE HEIGHT of the storm (also = stupid)
1 heart-attack prior to hurricane.

While there are deaths that can truly be attibuted to the Hurricane/Tropical Storm/Bad Thunderstorm, as hurricanes go this one was a pussycat.

I hope the areas affected by flooding come out okay.

Real title and description should be:
Title-Irene takes a gentle stroll on the east coast.
Description-Laughs at how no one is home.

This is a total non event, it`s a cat 1 (well was), it`s a fricking baby. I went through 2 in a goddamn week in Australia, and the only inconvenience was I stopped doing my bus driving job for 4 hrs when everyone in my backpacker hostel decided that 2inches an hour of rain was too much to bother going to the pub. This is a complete joke. It`s like 2 inches of snow in London, total overreaction by bad journalists who don`t know anything beyond 30 miles of their workplace.

If you wanna see what a real hurricane can do, like a cat 4 or 5, try this video of Hurricane Charley - jump to 3:02 http://goo.gl/IrwIk for the cat 5 gust - famous within storm geek circles - or else see post devastation here of the world famous Cyclone Tracy that totalled (and I do mean totalled) the city of Darwin in N Australia on Xmas Day 1974 http://goo.gl/pPJh8 yet somehow only with 65 deaths. Tracy single handedly changed building reg`s in Australia forever, Irene is a non event in comparison.

Much ado about nothing.

Irene is a flop. It was hyped by the media in order to give Obama a `Crisis`. (As in, `You don`t ever want a crisis to go to waste; it`s an opportunity to do important things that you would otherwise avoid.` -- Rahm Emanuel)

Any comparisons to this stiff wind and any serious hurricane (Katrina, Frederic, Camille, etc) will make the person doing the comparing look like an idiot.
