Ever Wonder What A Head-On Collision Is Like?

Sadly, the driver with the camera checks his own car before checking on the others involved in the accident.

This is why everyone should always wear a seat-belt... Not that it would have made any difference in the white car :(

Still people, please wear your seat-belt...

According to rusdtp.ru this happened on July 24 between Khabarovsk & Vladivostok. The driver of the white car & his front passenger died ("suffered injuries incompatible with life"). Four passengers from the two white cars (ie the one in front of the camera car + the camera car) as well as the female driver of the red car were hospitalised. You can clearly see someone hanging out of the window in the red car after the crash :( You can see more images here

even if the red car did make the pass, look how close it was. stupid risk to take to save what? a few minutes?

Nah, coffeekoneko, the car with the camera just kept sliding so the white car is behind him when the smoke clears. It`s possible it fell off, but that`s not why it`s not in the video.

I don`t think it`s "sad" that he checked his car immediately after the accident. He was stunned, and bewildered about the events, and he had passengers in the car. Likely checking for fires, or something, but also just trying to grasp the whole situation.
When you`re in a crisis situation, your instinct is to gather as much information around you about your surroundings before you react. It`s a healthy reaction to have, since it can save your life.
When I was rear-ended on the highway by 4 other cars, and a secondary collision happened right beside me, my first reaction was to check my bumper. Why? Because I was just trying to grasp what had just happened, and make sense of it before I reacted. Once I realized what happened really happened, I went around to the other cars, making sure everyone was okay.

Kaagan:"the driver in white minivan clearly didn`t make it. The crumple zone went to the back seat."

Not only that, but did you notice that the minivan isn`t in the final shot? It was pushed onto the guard rail and off the bridge! poo.

"After the accident you are in shock and can`t think clearly. It`s just like when you throw your food in the garbadge and keep the weapper"

It`s actually nothing like that at all unless you just had a traumatic experience and decided to go eat a candy bar.

That was two normal sized cars and an SUV all very tightly bunched on the left side that drove by the accident unscathed. So yeah, the red car was initially behind the SUV and tried to make a three car jump where it was unsafe to do so due to a complete lack of shoulder lanes on the bridge, but since it was a three car jump, he sped up much faster than he was capable of controlling and swerved into the right lane even though, had he kept control, he would`ve just barely avoided the accident.

Yeah, this was completely the red car`s fault. Most likely where ever this happened, they have the same rules about solid white line lane dividers as we do. I drive on the opposite side of the interstate all the time when stuck behind trucks and what not. But ONLY when I`ve got checkered lane dividers where it`s legal to do so.

That was pretty scary to watch. Also, the 2-second rule apparently isn`t enough.

If you look, the red car appeared to be trying to swerve back into it`s own lane from the wrong side of the road, then over-compensated when it nearly clipped the white car.

You can clearly see the white car, then the red suddenly swerves over from the right into view and spins out of control.

On top of that, the white car barely wobbles. If it had tapped the red car enough to cause THAT, wouldn`t it have swerved a fair amount too?

Whatever.... When I was PCSing from Lewis to Bragg some stupid lady decided to be unique and take to the left un-plowed lane going at least 85. Basically she lost control, flipped around facing me and a collision was unavoidable. Believe me, the first things running through my head were not about her. I looked to my right, my son said he was fine, I hopped out and looked back at my other baby (my car) being towed on a full sized trailer on a fully loaded 26 ft U-haul. THEN my attention went to her, and apparently her daughter. She was lucky to be ok seeing as how the air bags on her 2006 Tahoe didn`t even deploy...

@DracObi: As someone else said, that`s untrue. Newton`s laws.

Also, all 3 cars that were damaged pretty badly did not appear to do anything wrong. You`ll see a white hatchback in the other lane right after the impact, it looks like they bumped the red car like MightyPeanut said.

Yes, how dare he check to make sure there`s no fire in the vehicle the females he more than likely cares about are in. I mean, WHAT WAS HE THINKING?! He could have saved everybody!

Id check my own car too, the accident wasn`t (completely) his fault so he needs to assess the damage of the cars involved.

He`s trying to figure out if his car is on fire before he pulls his passenger out, I would probably do that too, the other car is not my problem until I check on my own people

The first 50 seconds are a nice anticipation. Every time a car passed, I got excited for carnage, but then had to wait.

Auto insurance SHOULD still cover if the bad driver dies, but ALL insurance companies are vile, un-human mosters and will try to screw you out of every dime they can...

DAMN... Any way we can get some more info on this? Looks like the people in the white van didn`t stand a chance, the red car I doubt... Only reason the recorder was okay was because the first collision slowed the red car down and he braked like hell...

It didn`t look like he was checking his own car at all.

It looks as if he was going to head around the other side of his car to either help his passengers, or help the white car stuck up on the railing, and decides against going that way round once he sees how much wreckage/petrol there is.

Alternatively, perhaps he`s looking to see if there`s fuel leaking and an explosion risk.

Or, far more likely, HE`S JUST BEEN SHAKEN UP IN A MASSIVE ACCIDENT AND UNDERSTANDABLY ISN`T THINKING CLEARLY OR ACTING FULLY RATIONALLY!

ffs.

if the person who`s fault it is dies does their insurer still pay for the damage doen to other peoples cars?

Male 2,121
@DracObi, actually no, the impact isn`t equal to 120mph. It`s a bit confusing to think about, but it`s the same as driving into a wall at 60. Half the energy involved slows one car down to 0, the other half slows the other car to 0. The energies involved are double in a head on collision, but they are distributed over 2 cars rather than 1.

Faulting him for looking at the car is pretty stupid. When you get into an accident like this you don`t think very rationally. Your adrenaline is pumping, your heart is racing, and your brain has a difficult comprehending what`s going on. YOU get into an accident like this and see how sound-of-mind you are for the first minute or two afterwards.

HOLY poo!!!!!!!!! Ppl are lucky to servive that, lookd like they were going about 60, which translated into the primary impact being 120Mph impact. not fun stuffs.
