@CrakrJak - at the time, the British were the dominant power, the Americans would have been perceived as terrorists(rebels as the term of the day). History may have proven them right, and I do agree that there is a difference between freedom fighter and terrorist.
My point is that the terrorist label is often applied to freedom fighters, in order to make their struggle seem illegitimate.

dirtysteve: Considering all the facts of the revolutionary war, our founding fathers were freedom fighters and the British `Red Coats` committed the acts of terrorism.

Would you call the people fighting against Qadaffi in Libya to be terrorists ?

Sorry, but the two words are not as interchangeable as you might believe.

No wife or girlfriend. Oh jeez, perhaps because he was a veteran Navy SEAL and maybe didn`t have the sort of life that made it easy to settle down.

First, what kind of drated up useless piece of poo are you that you feel compelled to think about whether the dead guy was gay.

Second, its none of your drating business whether he was gay or not. He was an elite member of the military killed in action. He deserved more respect than you will ever earn in your miserable, useless lifetime.

@nettech That`s more true for the sacrifices made by communist Russian soldiers,who did more damage to Germany. However, it doesn`t make the Stalinist state any more laudable.

As for CrakrJack : "Freedom fighters don`t strap bombs onto themselves and blow up civilians on a bus or outside a night club or other populated area. "
You`re missing the original point, he never claimed that he believed terrorists were freedom fighter. What he said, was that freedom fighters are often seen as terrorists, regardless of how they fight.
I agree that the bombing of innocents is terrorism, and horrendous. But anyone who resists an occupying force, can also be called `terrorists` by said force.
Do you consider your founding fathers terrorists, or freedom fighters?

@I-See-U:

You are not obligated at all to give a thought about soldiers. However, it would be nice if you could at least respect them for standing up for what they personally believe in to the extent where they are risking their lives. You do not have to personally support any war. I don`t care if you vehemently oppose it. However, respect to the dead is always in good taste. Just keep that in mind.

Freedom fighters are not terrorists or vice versa, That`s another false liberal talking point and lately they`ve been aiming that stupid rhetoric at the Tea Party.

So now you bring up the `Nuclear Cowboy` analogy eh ?

Reagan was called that too, when he in fact broke the back of Russia with his Star Wars Initiative bluff. He was never going to start a nuclear war and we know now that Russia wouldn`t have either.

There are only a few countries that are worrisome when it comes to nukes, because their leaders make repeated threats of acquiring and using them.

If you are worrying about America using nukes, your worries are severely misplaced.

lol, Gerry I`ve been the sole owner of it for a long time now, in fact I put it in a safe place in case I want some for later. I`m a nice person so I`ll even share it with you if you want some. Not too sure what you mean by "enjoy it" but if its enjoyable consider it enjoyed.

"Yes, many brave people fought and died so you could enjoy that right and you demean those very same patriots, but that is also a right they gave you."

I`ve heard that before.... didn`t Jesus do the same thing?

Now back to being serious, have as much sympathy as you would like, I wont agree but I wont judge either. I just hope that people who think like you don`t ever push the little red button and watch half of the world go kabooom, just so that the other half can have their irrelevant opinions while eating to the point of explosion and watching nyan cat videos.

@ I-See-U

Your correlating Patriotism with Anti-Gay retoric.

Again you dodge the main issue and throw up a smoke screen to hide from the core issue.

If you have a firm belief that hiding from all conflict is the best way to go, then stand up for it. Don`t put a spin on it. Own it. Be proud. You have a right to your opinion. Yes, many brave people faught and died so you could enjoy that right and you demean those very same patriots, but that is also a right they gave you. Enjoy it.

"I dare any and all of you unappreciative people to go live in a different country for a couple of years."

Parents moved to Iran for work when I was 12 and I lived there for 3 year. It gave me an appreciation for bikinis and made me realize no matter where in the world one is, there are always idiots as well as rational people living there. How bout you?

@Gerry

lol. You can say it all you want, it wont change anything. BTW, you sound like the anti-gay people who stand in the street holding a sign repeating the same thing over and over in hopes of removing someones gayness. (just giving you an example that you have probably experienced, not bashing you or anybodys sexual preference)

I-See-U - I`m gonna say it again, because it`s worth repeating.

[quote]"War is an ugly thing. But not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral patriotic feeling that thinks nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself." "No amount of kind heartedness will change their mind."

The same thing can be said about violence. (Also I never said anything about kindness.)

and evolution has nothing to do with the wars we are fighting. Lions and chimps wont hesitate to kill another family of lions and chimps if they see them. We can either go towards that behavior or use our evolutionary advantage to move away from it.

Do you see what is happening here? I am being persecuted because I believe violence will not fix violence and have no remorse for people who carry out acts of violence. Also being called an azzhole for not giving a damn about a blue and red piece of cloth. I never asked any of those guys to fight so why am I obligated to feel sorry for them? Its something they chose and I don`t agree with.

Finally, on your last statement you said, "What`s the matter? Did it hit too close to home?". I now know that you have no more rational thoughts to say. Yo

I dare any and all of you unappreciative people to go live in a different country for a couple of years. If you hate America this much, and I`m not talking politics, go somewhere else. It`s that simple. You have the right to move about, so go!
Yeah, we all have our opinions, but to degrade and mock this young man is dismal at best. I agree with the quote from John Stuart Mill, you are cowards who think everything is a right and not a privilege to be EARNED.

@I-See-U - U are so lost I don`t know where to begin.

I never mentioned "instinct". You specifically said you`d never join a military organization...my comments are based on that.

Comparing military with a planned murder "pack your bags...go to someones house to kill them" is a rediculous statment. With that reasoning you can call all sexual activities `rape`. Or any meal `gluttony`.

"Evolution" has nothing to do with what we`re talking about. If you mean social development, there are some societies that want you dead. No amount of kind heartedness will change their mind.

As for my statements of patriotism equalling an endless cycle of violence - Bull. I`ve been discussing patiotism and cowardice. Not evolution. Not instict. Not homocide. Sounds like your throwing up smoke screens to hide from the actual dialogue.

What`s the matter? Did it hit too close to home?

You think your free just cause you can yell anything you want?

Try doing anything else and you`ll need permission from someone else. Either in the form of taxes, licenses, or codes. You can`t even FISH or SELL LEMONADE anymore without someone else allowing you to....... and you think your free???

This us vs them, patriotic, "freedom fighting", I`m right your wrong, superior bullsh*t that your statement implies is the same thing a racist or hate groups are all about.

Think of it this way, everyone has an opinion on a subject and it`s different from other peoples. So if each one of the 7billion people(with different opinions) had a gun and decided to "stand up for their right" there would only be 1 person left on earth.

So, as far as I`m concerned the idiots who wanna kill can go shoot themselves, just stop doing it with my tax money and don`t expect me to act all sympathetic when you die because of your ego.

How dare you people tell this family these things. He believed in his country and he did what he was supposed to do. We are at war, for whatever reason, and he volunteered to help keep us safe from people that would just as soon kill us all. If you don`t like being her then GTFO of America. GO! We sure don;t need people like YOU here. I`ll never forget the sight of our American flag flying when my family came back from overseas, it made me very proud. YOU suck. That man IS a HERO. Something YOU will NEVER BE TO ANYONE.

@Gerry

There is a difference between premeditated and instinctual. Of course if a guy runs at me with a knife I`m not going watch him stab me, my instincts wont allow me to.

However, when you pack your bags with guns, plan your attack, and then go to someones house to kill them it`s a different story.

Sure, I believe in "survival of the fittest" but at the same time I also believe in "evolution". We wont evolve to be a better species if every idiot with a thought and a gun "fights" because his ego tells him he cannot be wrong. We have evolved to have the power of thought and if we don`t use it will disappear. (just look at the hillbilly`s in the back woods)

If you follow the statement you posted, nothing but more fighting and destruction will occur. Case and point will be the Israel/Palestinian situation or, the Shiite/Sunni situation and I could go on and on with examples.

The amount of "freedom" propaganda is so thick in these comments I could hardly escape.

I don`t understand why so many think that the wars we have fought in the US since WWII have anything to do with our freedom or safety has a nation. I also don`t understand the amount of flag and soldier worship either. As if ever american solider is some how one in the same with the soldiers of long ago when we were actually engaged in wars to actually preserve and obtain our freedom.

People who stand on their rights {like free speech} but berate those who fight to keep them are beneith contept.

No, not every battle a soldier fights will be just in the 20/20 vision of history. But that does not diminish the individual`s moral bravery for willingly taking the risk. Nor does it justify the moral cowardice of those who don`t.

yoda141 - Because Americans are clearly paranoid and think every single country in the world is trying to steal their so called "freedom" on a daily basis.

Every time someone from America brings up their "freedom" and "liberty" and whatever other crap they like to spout, I swear it makes me sick to my stomach. It`s cringeworthy, it really is.

And it has to make you laugh, because Americans believe it`s because of their people fighting for their country they have what they have today.

No. It`s because the French won one particular war for you, giving you your so called freedom. If it weren`t for every other country in the world, you`d not even be where you are today.

Don`t forget when you claim you`re a mix of Irish and German, or whatever else, "that" is where you come from.

"It`s because of MEN like him and others who are willing to stand up and fight for their country that you are even here"

NO! It`s because of people like him who will fight for whatever that were always at war!!!!! If our troops actually had a say whether they were willing to participate in a war or not we wouldn`t be going to war every day in every country.

According to pretty much every other all my opposition, world peace does not exist and never will, so people who die for the wrong reasons are morons!

This dead guy, is a moron!

Pick what you fight for and make it worth your life, not whatever someone tells you because the people who initiated the war had a temper and refused to continue negotiations.

I lament this death just as much as anyone and i respect his choice to go serve his country without questioning, and his sacrifise to it, but why is it that most people here who are from the U.S think their freedoms and rights are being protected by going over to another country and messing poo up for years, and not retreat when the reason why they went there was over?

I-See-U: what you said to begin with may have actually been a little insensitive...there is no proof whatsoever that says that this man signed up with the military saying "lets kill some people from 3rd world countries." some people do it because that is the only option left available to them and some people do it just because they want to serve their country.

but at the same time i dont completely understand why this made national news...its a dog mourning...what about the people who mourned for him? what about everyone else mourning for everyone else?

until i see a memorial service for every living person to have ever died in the history of mankind get your balls off the ground and move on...thats what life is about and thats what we have been doing since the beginning of time anyway...

These are people who like to kill people for made up bullsh*t and they go halfway accross the world to meet other people who wanna kill people. This guys was just unlucky to get the short end of the stick.

I feel just as sorry for the idiot in the turbine sitting on a donky as I do for the idiot in a helmet sitting in a helicopter.
