A nation free of regulation, laws, and moral conventions... This didn"t go well for Andrew Ryan.

This has so much potential to go wrong. Let`s watch...

Free of laws, legislation, moral conventions, and no welfare, minimum wage, looser building codes, and few restrictions on weapons.

Yeah, I`m buying me a boat and a large tub of popcorn, cause watching this is going to be FUN. The defining moment is when someone accidentally launches an RPG and destroys half the city because of the crappy housing built by slave labor.

Rofl. Good luck with that Mr. Thiel.

Spend millions on an unsustainable anarchist island and expect it to be paradise. You forgot to factor in the `human` element. Look at "The Republic of Rose Island."

I like this idea. When they start offering plasmids, call me.

To quote him, "...And they will not actually try to stop us until it`s too late."

Sounds eerily similar to Bioshock though.

skullgrin - Tsunamis are a problem because islands are fixed I grant you. You can`t then switch the argument on it`s head and use the fact real islands are fixed as a justification for flating islands being ok - large ships would be a better parallel, although to every problem there is a solution. Maybe he jsut watched waterworld too many times tho.
Where the hell are they going to go if there is a hurricane/typhoon or tsunami? He plans for millions of people to live there, but no country in their right mind would be able to accept millions of refugees like that.
tsunami`s dont get to be a problem till they reach shore. as the wave hits the shallower water it arcs above sea level. hurricanes are not a problem either as it has never been a problem for the hundreds of islands we have on earth right now

Grand scheme of tax evasion. The people who choose to live there should not be allowed to profit from land living people.

And Ayn Rand`s stories are fiction, but that doesn`t make the underlying themes and concepts false, now does it?

Bioshock wasn`t successful because it was super-special and better in terms of gameplay. There are plenty of shooters out there just like it or better. It was successful because of the world it was in. It not only looked cool, but had a realistic and fleshed out history that was based on concepts that are seen in everyday life.

Sure, there`s no city under the ocean where things went to hell because of magic gene-altering tonics.

But the idea of a top-heavy society failing because of a lack of support from beneath is real. The plasmids just facilitated the fall (and made the gameplay fun).

@LazyMe: It would generate income from the 3 things people want most: casinos, prostitution & drugs :-)

It sounds tremendously interesting, but yeah I loled at `millions of people` too.

"loose building codes"? If you`re going to link hundreds of platforms together and make their infrastructure mesh, you`d better have some super-duper codes in place, eh?

PK Dick wrote a book with a guy who builds a space station just to house prostitutes and casinos. It made whacks of money! lolz!

It floats @dragosal but they anchor it to keep it from drifting around, eh?

Loose gun laws? lolz! Welcome to WestWorld! Where nothing can go wrong...

"free of regulation, laws, and moral conventions." This is another `good in theory not in practice` kind of ideals. However, I would absolutely love to see this place in action. Just sit in and observe. Then, when everything starts getting squirrely, I can high tale it back to our messed-up-but-not-quite-so-messed-up nations.

YES! Love the Bioshock reference. Well played. And I agree that this is some epic villain stuff out of a DC comic. At least it will be easy to sink when the crap hits the fan.

As for the building codes...

If they build a SINGLE building wrong, and it comes down just right, it could sink the entire island.

Can you just smell the profit life insurance companies would be making?

It may just be a video game, but Rapture failed for very, VERY real reasons.

When an entire culture consists of nothing but ambitious people with brains, money, power, and nothing to hold them back, no one wants to do the dirty jobs.

When no one does the dirty jobs, things start falling apart.

Top-heavy societies always fail. ALWAYS. Because there`s no reason for anyone to work at the bottom and keep it all stable. Short of slavery at least, and that of course goes against freedom, usually leading to revolutions and the collapse of society. See the first sentence of this paragraph.

Great concept, this is just offshore citizenship. Become a citizen, spend time on land as a visitor with a work visa. When the U.S. implodes you will still be able to flee the country with your new passport after our government puts the lock down on its citizens at the country borders.

In the end they`ll create a pleasant little society of 100 or so people who cooperate with each other completely because:
1 - they`ve been selected as pleasant people from the world at large
2 - they have no choice, otherwise they`d starve.

All the while Peter Thiel is boasting "yes, I`ve create a society with a superior government" never mentioning that he has to spend $10M/year just so that the people there don`t starve or revolt or leave for lack of modern amenities.

And lastly, looser building codes? That`s just stupid. You`re on a freaking offshore platform in the middle of the ocean. If anything the building code, if there is one, is going to be ridiculously strict. In fact you probably won`t be allowed to build anything at all. The guy who built the platform will probably also end up building everything else.

Tens of millions? (they say) All on offshore platforms? All anchored to the sea floor?

Doomed. This is doomed to fail.

Such a project cannot be self-sustaining. This guy may be a billionaire, and he may have the means to get it going - for instance those pictures in the article. But there is no way this place can grow.

There is no way to get food (apart from fishing), no way to manufacture goods, unless it`s all imported... or export garbage.

Everything must be imported (bought) form elsewhere - and that includes the millions of tons of concrete and steel that are needed to build more platforms. Something this billionaire could not afford on his own.

The only way would be for the project itself to generate income. How would it do that, as isolated as it is? Sell fish? Not enough. It would be a platform of telemarketers and Tech Support reps. ... and even in that case it would be tremendously inefficient.

I keep seeing that same comment over and over, but it`s just a ******* video game. It. Didn`t. Really. Happen.

People need to stop with the damn BioShock comments when they read this crap.

Someone never played Bioshock. Andrew Ryan DID have moral conventions AND laws.

This guy is bastardizing Ayn Rand ideas. Ayn Rand did not believe a society could exist without strong moral conventions and laws.

"Looser building codes"? A free society would have no building codes.

The project probably will be a failure, but it`ll be interesting to watch. If it actually works out, cool!

No, No, NO, He`s cheating. Do it right and start from scratch on the primitive scale. Like the Polynesians. Go find a deserted island and start with no electric. None of the normal everyday societal gifts such as infrastructure. Then you will develop your true utopia Lord God Bufu. Otherwise it`s all a facade of a true test.

@Draculya:
It reminds me of the Principality of Sealand.
The big difference is that one guy is in charge of Sealand. If they ever get this going, it will be a mess. I`d bet they would go through multiple forms of government very quickly before either falling apart or being taken over by the drug cartels.

I am Peter Thiel, and I`m here to ask you a question. Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his brow?

`No!` says the man in Washington, `It belongs to the poor.`

`No!` says the man in the Vatican, `It belongs to God.`

`No!` says the man in Moscow, `It belongs to everyone.`

I rejected those answers; instead, I chose something different. I chose the impossible. I chose... Rapture, a city where the artist would not fear the censor, where the scientist would not be bound by petty morality, Where the great would not be constrained by the small! And with the sweat of your brow, Rapture can become your city as well.
