    They have the confessed killer.

I think Fancylad needs to get his story straight

The killer`s name is Anders Breivik.
The Island is called Utøya (ut - øya)

Translated it means "out island", but "out" as in "far". meaning for example "that island that is kinda far from the mainland in the middle of the fjord"

he probably told them he wasnt the only one involved and made some kind of deal...

either way unless someone is with him and awake 24/7 it was stupid to let him go back. any information he has to offer they could have just shaved off some of his sentence for it...

Agreed. What? Is there some other qualification one needs to meet before they call themselves a christian? It seems like something anyone can be if they choose to. Isn`t that the whole point?

This event makes me question my usually solid, unyielding stance that the death penalty is wrong in all cases. People shouldn`t be punished, that`s the least economical option. They should be forced to repair the damage in a manner that fits them in the amount of the damage they caused. I`d rather sentence this guy to 1500 years of community service then kill him. ... actually that`s just a working theory. Never mind.

I don`t get why they need to jog his memory. He admitted to shooting a bunch of people, he may or may not recall how many he actually hit, but who cares? Everyone who was hit, were shot by him. Do the math, hand the life sentence, move on.

Firstly, as a Norwegian and a citizen of Oslo i`d like to emphazise that focusing on this man`s religious views is wrong. It`ll help his "cause" - eventually. He believed that Muslims are going to take over and control Europe. This is the crazy conspiracy theories that he believed in. It`s the same as in the 30`s Germany, only back then it was the jews. This is what we are up against.

The reason that it is important to bring him to Utoya is nr. 1. the families of all the victims have a profound need to know as many details as possible about what happened. A person who have lost a loved one by violence, often suffer from fantasies that can be scary. The only "cure" is to know as much as possible about the event.

Secondly, every murder is equally important. Breivik can withdraw his testimony. In Norway, you can`t be convicted for murder, solely on your testimony. The police simply needs evidence as well.

As for the penalty: the penalty for terrorism in Norway is 30 years. However, (and this will probably be the case) Breivik can get a "security- verdict" which means that he will be examined every 5th year to be eligeble for perole - also the public`s safety is considered. If not eligeble, he will not be released. In reality, this means that he may spend the rest of his life behind bars. But we don`t kill people here. I know many people are positive to the death sentence. It`s their right. Personally, i`m proud that we don`t have it. Human Life has a unbreakable value. It reflects the norms that our society is buildt upon.

I`ll try to bring som info on why he`s there, as written in Norwegian media these days.
it is mainly so that the police and his prosecutors can get as much info for his trial as necessary. The trial will go trough each murder in as much detail as possible, as per norwegian law, so they have to be just as thorough with this as with any murder trial. This is also because many families that are affected want as much details surrounding their loved ones deaths as possible. They should be given that option.

Norwegian law also says that everyone affected of a crime, every witness, so forth, needs to be in the court room at the trial. There are no court rooms in Norway big enough to fit 1,500 people.

It seems to be infuriating to some people that the Norwegians still aren`t shouting for the death penalty, is it really that hard to understand that some societies (in my view more advanced ones) disagree with the principle of the death penatly? I think the Norwegian societies reaction to the tragedy has been incredibly impressive and inspiring, it`s brought them together instead of apart, they aren`t pointing fingers or going on tirades against one another, they are trying to help each other; even the politicians agreed to work together (somewhat) and aren`t using these events as a platform. Norway isn`t perfect, but I am definitely impressed. I was born in Sweden so Norwegians should understand this is hard for me to admit! ;)

@ChrisMunich, I agree, the Norwegians have come across as measured and dignified in how they`ve handled this.

As for people asking what use is it to have him retrace his actions on the Island...in addition to the reasons already stated on the Norwegian legal system, there will also need to have as much information as possible on timings, movements etc. to that the police response can be better analysed. The more detailed the information the better in any scenario like this, it`s not enough to say well people died and we got someone for it.... that tells you pretty much nothing, and certainly not enough lessons learned to input back into armed response training should a similar incident happen again in the future.

Ugh, trust everyone to get all worked up over the fact he`s a Christian. His religion had little to do with it, if anything we should be worried about the extremist right wing views he holds - very reminiscent of many parties now gaining popularity in Europe such as the BNP or UKIP.

The caption is not right. Utoya is the name of the island. Also, in Norwegian the "o" in "Utoya" should have an arrow through it - allthough the page will turn it into wierd symbols.

The killer`s name is Anders Behring Breivik.

"Anders Behring Breivik returns to Island of Murder" would be the correct caption.

He`s a nutter. It has little to do with race, religion, or political views and more to do with the fact he`s insane. Really, if we are going to blame it on anything other than he is crazy, then every single race, religion, and political party should be imprisoned to protect our well being because EVERY race, religion, and political party has had their share of crazies.

@ ChrisMunich - 15 muslims? try three times that number. 53 million muslims in EU according to net sources {Wiki, BBC news }. They currently make up 10% of the population of France. Considering the short time they`ve had to infest europe it would seem that withing 50 years they will outnumber you and therefore have the political clout to change your governments to Sharia Law . Which has already started in Britton
At least, thats the conspiracy theory, right?
If you buy into that or not, there are still a lot more of them than you thought.

@Gerry: that`s a common misconception. There`s roughyl 53 million muslims in the EUROPEAN CONTINENT. The European Union (which has just over 500 million inhabitants), has around 15 million (give or take 3 million depending on the study) muslims according to data from the BBC, Soest, the EUMC, the telegraph, Deutsche Welle and the CFR. France has the highest percentage of around 10%, whilst some EU nations have around 1-2%, this balances to around 4% of the EU population. The data you`ve viewed is frequently used to misrepresent the actual numbers.

    -ver is unrealistic and paranoid.

I know im saying a lot here, but as a responsible citizen of a nation struggling with a growing misconseption of the world, and reality, i find it to be my responsability to stop these thoughts when i see them. So the facts are at least available, even though i know that most fanaticts refuse to consider them.

Fanaticts will be fanatics though, still the truth must be conveyed as often as possible.

There is no "Muslim danger" to Europe. The only danger is in some peoples heads.

@Gerry and others, here you can find the correct current numbers plus future estimate of Muslims living in Europe.

There are 3 % Muslims in Norway. By 2030 the number will be 6,5 % - where it will start to stabilize because of the fertility of both Muslims and non- Muslims will equalize because of assimilation.

Numbers are from New York`s "PEW Research Center" where some of the finest scientists in the world work thouroughly on cultural questions. This is a top source for information.

Gerry. These thoughts of and "Muslim overtake" are extremely dangerous. Someone said that the Jews was taking over the world back in 1930 - and someone still believe it. From today, the European Muslim population will increase by only 2 % until 2030.

The thought of a "minority tako-

I think it`s pretty obvious that the guy didn`t had any friends. That`s why he`s happier now, he feels like he has lots and lots of little cop friends protecting him.

I hope that someday someone will notice that there is something wrong with this world that actually lead to people to do stupid things like that and do something about it.

I just don`t believe in the theory that wants everyone to believe that Anders Breivik Utoya is simply evil so that`s just what he do. There`s something deeper going on.
