And as for veal or chickens stacked in cages . . . it`s just food man! As long as there is no direct willful torture I don`t care how my food is farmed. Contented happy livestock brings a better price by weight. Once while loading 3 cows on a trailer for transport to slaughter the 3rd cow kinda caught on and wouldn`t be loaded. It took 3 men and lots of ingenuity to get that guy loaded. We took no pleasure in what many would view as a violent process. I learned what cow poop tastes like. Then, when the meat was cut and wrapped I learned what the finest grass fed beef was all about. It`s just food . . . mmmmm beef!

I want to know if theres any vegans who go so far as to cut l-cysteine, chitosan, cochineal, lanolin, oleic acid, capric acid or plain old beer out of their diets and household/beauty products...I`d really like to see them try.

To each their own. The sun burnt hydrogen and helium gas to make light for the plants to grow. The plants used sunlight and leached nutrient. Birds and bees work with the wind to pollinate plants. I don`t discriminate it is all game. Cows, pigs, fish, birds, etc... If it can be cooked and taste good count me in. As far as I`m concerned if I don`t buy that beautiful sirloin from the meat department or my butcher and cook it rare and eat it somebody else will. I`m going to get my piece!

you cant really blame people for asking "what do you eat?" to a vegetarian
theres like 10 different types of vegetarian
some eat chicken, some eat fish, some eat eggs, some eat cheese, some eat milk, some eat none of that
theyre just trying to figure out what you will and wont eat so they know what restaurants take you to, what meals to make you, what food to buy you etc
usually that is, there are plenty of people that are just perplexed by the whole idea of not eating certain things based on some sort of life choice and not just taste preferences

same thing happens to my friend all the time who is just a really picky eater

immigrants, illegal or otherwise, ARE STILL HUMAN
and dont you think people should care about humans more than GODDAMN BEES?
also those lousy working conditions and poor pay are still better than what they get back in their country and its a lot safer here
again, the animals live in bad conditions and are treated like crap... SO ARE THE IMMIGRANTS
the difference being the immigrants ARE HUMAN
and dont give me that `they have a choice` nonsense... their choice is either bad conditions in the US or worse conditions in Mexico
and no one brought up crap about whats in the food (no one even brought up beef so i dont know why you decided to hate on everyone for it)
the only thing that is being discussed is the logic behind caring more about animal labor than human labor
THAT IS ALL
get off your high horse and stop bringing up beef in a conversation about bees making honey

Chimneychang, there are some more radical vegans who do believe domesticated animals should be allowed to go extinct (those who can not fend for themselves, at least, like domestic turkeys, broiler chickens, cows, etc.). They also believe the human race itself should choose to go extinct because apparently our claim to life on this planet is not as valid as other species` claims.

Well, let`s see; They are not immigrants, they are illegal aliens.Criminals that are tresspassing in the country. If they don`t like lousy working conditions and 50 cents a day they can go home and work to make THEIR country a better place. They are capable of that choice.
The milk-along with the beef-are full of growth hormones, antibiotics as well as a host of other crap, and the animals are treated horribly during their lives-and worse in their deaths. They had no choice.
Barring all that,I look around me every day and see fat, diseased people who got that way from poor eating habits. And not just in the U.S.
The methods and technologies that the meat industries employ were not meant to sustain people numbering in the billions. They are a non sustainable industry poisoning the planet as well as the consumers. That goes for industrial farming as well.
But you go ahead fatso, stuff that big mac down your gullet.

I was confused by the logic. But most likely because I am a vegetarian.

It is far more annoying being a vegetarian. You get the same stupid question from every person. "What do you eat?" "How do you get your protein?"
Also, I do not give a poo if you eat meat in front of me. I just have a different diet than you. Leave it at that.

Humans are biologically designed to be omnivores...We are designed(either by god or evolution) to eat both meat and vegetation. Typically American eat more meat than they should, and the way we treat out live stock for the most part is deplorable on an ethical level, and a disaster on a biological one(the antibiotics and hormones they pump in them do get assimilated by our bodies)My question to vegans is, how do they feel about destroying all the species of domesticated animals, because that will happen if we stop cultivating them.In other words vegans=hitler cows=jews deal with it!

Incidentally, the healthy/unhealthy vegan/vegetarian issue isn`t about not eating meat; it`s about not being informed about what nutrients you need. And that is a problem endemic in both meat-eaters and vegetarians/vegans alike.

The fat guy chowing down on a McDonalds burger is the parallel of the frail vegan: neither are paying proper attention to what their bodies need and what`s in their food.

You CAN be healthy eating meat, and you CAN be healthy being vegan. But BOTH sides need to know about their food in order to be healthy, and it`s not as simple as "get some meat in you".

@Angilion

"In short, you can be healthy without meat. It just takes knowledge and a bit of care."

Exactly!

And that`s why we end up with three different kinds of vegans/vegetarians:

1: Those who don`t know what they`re doing/talking about, but act like they do, so end up sickly/eating animal products without knowing it/making fools of themselves.

2: Those who do know what they`re talking about and act like superior arseholes

3: Those who do know what they`re talking about and are polite and respectful about it.

All three attract the ire of non-vegans/vegetarians: the first because they`re morons who deserve it, the second because they`re rude arseholes who deserve it, and the last because...well, frankly, I don`t know why. Insecurity perhaps?

I belong (hopefully) to the third group. Eat a burger. It doesn`t bother me. But why does it bother some when I don`t eat a burger?

Maybe IAB should hire someone to write better software for handling comments. $100 to a couple of schoolkids doing computer studies should be enough to get something better.

It`s an apostrophe on my keyboard and it appears as an apostrophe when I view the page (using Firefox 5.0).

They`re on opposite sides of the keyboard on the standard British keyboard I`m using. Apostrophe is middle-right, two right of L. Grave accent is almost top left, one left of 1. There`s hardly any chance of mixing them up.

What browser are you using?

Nutrients...yes, a vegatarian has some problems with that, but they`re nearly all solvable if you know what you`re eating.

Iron and calcium are issues, but you can get enough from plant sources. Not all that easily, but there are plant foods rich enough in them.

B12 is the biggie. On a pure vegetarian diet, you`re going to have to take supplements. You need very little B12, but you won`t get any from plant sources and B12 deficiency is very bad news. Yes, there are people living healthily on a purely vegatarian diet without B12 supplements, but they`re getting B12 from dung on their crops or in their water supply and that won`t happen in an industrialised country. B12 is a waste product of some bacteria, so it should be fine for even a purely vegetarian diet.

Lacto-ovo vegetarians can get B12, essential amino acids, etc, from eggs and dairy.

In short, you can be healthy without meat. It just takes knowledge and a bit of care.

Having got that off my chest, on to the content of your post. That`s also wrong.

Vegetarians who bother to learn the relevant facts about nutrition and who use that knowledge are not on the brink of death. It`s possible for a vegatarian to be an athlete, a weightlifter, a bodybuilder.

The issue with protein isn`t protein per se, but the amino acids that protein is made from. Those are the things that we actually use (our digestive system cuts protein up into the amino acids). There are a number of amino acids that humans require and can`t make, so those must be obtained from food. Meat contains them all in the right proportions. No plant food does...but different plant foods contain different ones in dfferent amounts, so if you eat the right combination of plant foods, you can get the right amounts of all the essential amino acids.

Nutrients coming up next.
vegetarian`s arent all tree huggers or animal activist.. thats just not true!!!!!!!!! but there are all on the brink of death because of low protein and lack of proper nutrients
I`m on the brink of death from the stress caused by so many people who can`t be bothered to learn the extremely simple rules concerning the use of apostrophes in English.

You`ve just written "vegetarian is arent all tree huggers". It wouldn`t make any sense even if "arent" is a word, which it isn`t.

For drat`s sake, it isn`t hard. Use an apostrophe in place of a missing letter or letters (e.g. are not --> aren`t) or when indication association or possession (e.g. greenbasterd`s post). Don`t use an apostrophe otherwise.

@ Dhharrgoww - "Natures Way" would indicate it is the natural order and therefore "INTENDED" to happen that way. Maybe even that animals purpose in life to die for you.

As for how much it suffers, that is entirely up to you. Make it quick and painless if you want, then it won`t suffer.

Seriously, I din`t intend to stir everyone up against you. Just friendly banter. You can tease me if you like `cause my ears stick out.

@Sibosa: I`m all about not being a dietary elitist. To each his own.

As far as the animals not consumed, they`re no longer apart of a natural ecosystem. They`re effectively extinct. In a progression away from meat in society, they`d die out, yes, but no longer would humanity raise animals for the sole purpose of their abuse and slaughter for food. This sounds rough, but rougher still would be any attempt to reintegrate them with the ecosystem, which would result in more harm in the long run. Perhaps some could be humanely raised and kept, but not likely reintroduced into the ecosystem. I`m not so sure that every vegetarian is going to agree with me on this, but what better way might there be? This is a hypothetical situation, of course. For many, vegetarianism isn`t any more than a moral and political choice.

@Gerry1of1: The "nature`s way" argument doesn`t hold any water. Just because it`s "natural" to go out and kill animals for food doesn`t mea

@Dhharrgoww could you please explain to me then what would happen to all the animals that where not killed for consumption and let back in to the wild. Not just the first lot but all there off spring etc etc, dont you think that world would be a little over populated by animals, I can understand that nature will take its toll and the predators will kill etc etc. But can they do enough to stop them all.

Also think about how many people there are in the world and how much crop you would need to feed them, plus with all the animals moving through towns etc etc. Personaly I dont like how alot of meat is produced i`e cattle farms that condone constant caging. I only eat free range or what i hunt and kill myself.

I have nothing against vegertarians or vegans what i dont like is how they try to ram it down my throat that eating meat is wrong.

Wellll,

I think that people should start with the assumption that, no matter what they`re going to do, they`re going to be harming living things simply by living. It`s unavoidable.

That being said, vegetarians are choosing a diet that brings less harm. Vegans are vegans essentially because they`re taking the next step in boycotting an inherently cruel industrialized food industry.

Animals die during the farming of crops. Vegetarians know this. What people who use this argument don`t seem to understand is that a pound of meat takes something like 15-17 pounds of grain to produce. If we didn`t eat meat, we`d be farming far less land and killing fewer animals, while simultaneously generating a greater surplus of food.

In addition to animal harm, harm for people is a problem too. I don`t think any vegan/vegetarian would deny this, and would be more than happy to take a less harmful alternative.

OK, I`m done now.
