The US does not have a native language, nor do we have Citizen cards like many place in Europe and I think Canada as well. I wish I a place to cite for this information more than my Contemporary social issues psychology class in college. There are multiple things wrong with that statement. First of all not all of America speaks English. Obviously, central and south America speak a variety of spanish and indigenous languages. North america, Canada has two national languages, French and English. So yeah, these women are idiots.

When my mome imigrated to the U.S. she had to learn to speak our language. Back then they didn`t translate drivers licenses and everything like they do now.

Okay, she was raised in England so it was probably easier for her than most, but still

I was just in Japan for 6 weeks, and I met many people from other countries who moved to Japan. I`d meet Thai and Indian people, for instance, who would say to me "I`m sorry, but please excuse me because I don`t speak English very well", and I`d realize they were apologizing about their THIRD language, which they still spoke more articulately than most Americans I know.

I speak Spanish bc I chose to learn it and I live in Texas. My step mother for example has been living in the US for 14 years since she married my father and has yet to learn any English. It has made life very hard in many ways. Say all you want Musuko42 "first world problems, how hard" but immigrants choose to come to America for a better life and usually to make money to send back home. I have worked with many immigrants from many places but since they come here looking for a new start and better life a lot of them work the system as well and they wont deny it! My sister works for Health and Human services and on a daily basis deals w immigrants illegal and legal who cant speak a word of English, who cant work, have 5+ kids who need food, shelter etc all on Americans dime. All I am saying is that my girls deserve a full education Pre-K-12 grade no matter what as ANY American citizen should.

You guys don`t seem to get it, there`s a difference between supporting immigrants, thinking they should learn & speak english.. which all makes sense.. and walking around with your friends in some huge t shirts saying "welcome to america" in patriotic letters followed by "now speak english!".

I mean come on what`s the point, I bet they have the "I support the troops" thing on their car and the aids awareness pin and the 20 feet tall us flag pole in their backyard etc.. Only in the US do you see that kind of stuff.. it`s weird.

What I don`t understand is where these English speaking Americans are going where they are actually offended/effected/debilitated by non-English speakers.

I don`t speak a lick of Spanish, and I`ve traveled a lot... I`ve never had a situation where I couldn`t go about my normal life because of people speaking another language around me.

I guess I just don`t how it effects them to hear others speaking Spanish.

If you are going to move to a country and live there you need to learn to speak the language.

Being able to speak English should be a requirement to be a citizen, and no concessions should be made for anyone that is not, nor should a illegal hamper the lifestyle of anyone that is.

You shouldn`t have to go anywhere with a interpreter.

Now if you are just on vacation or here on some approved work then sure it shouldn`t be expected, though if you come to a country often enough you should make the effort to learn the language.

(In case any of you lefties don`t understand my point, every survey ever carried out on the subject has found that people in the UK and USA who don`t speak English do worse than those who do, even when background, education levels and time in country is taken into account. These women are supporting immigrants, whether you, or indeed they, acknowledge it or not)

"...rednecks are xenophobic...", "...bigotry...", "These women are gross ...", "I am almost certain these women are racist ..."

Oh, the irony.

For a start there is the bigotry of the assumptions about these women.

Worse than that is that the people who are harmed by immigrants to America (or the UK for that matter) not speaking English are those immigrants themselves. The leftists who want them to work or even naturalise without learning English claim to be on the side of the immigrant; they claim that the people wanting a common language are the bigots. However these leftists are just keeping the immigrants in their place, as poor victims, who will then vote Democrat (Labour in the UK).

Those on the right who want people to learn the language of their host nation are supporting these immigrants` independence. They are not saying go home: they are saying live here as one of us, not as the other, the downtrodden

Name one CEO in the US who ONLY speaks Spanish. I`m sure you can find a lot who speak Spanish, even some as their primary language. But find me one who speaks ONLY Spanish.

By not speaking English in the US, you are limiting your opportunities in life. You should learn the language if only to help yourself get further in life.

How many kids do you have exactly?? Luckily my daughter is very smart and was taught well and will manage fine w/o Pre-K but I am an American Citizen my husband and I work our asses off to pay taxes like millions of other people. Why should ANY child be turned away from schooling?? The difference is that when you cant attend Pre-K publicly and are a Full time working parent you have to pay for this service. Just bc Im $50 bucks off from the income guidelines I have to shell out $350 a wk for 2 kids to attend daycare and get their Pre-K education bc by the time I get home from picking them up at 6:30 running errands, cooking dinner, giving baths, doing laundry and reading books til they fall asleep I think awe damn I forgot to teach them to write words today. Normal parents do this on a daily basis but its the families either working the system or that are uneducated that are reaping the benefits that we all work hard for. I am blessed to be a parent no matter how

@ Kadinsky, Just like in any other country their are all different types of people in this country. With different ideals and beliefs. It would take a lot more then this post to explain us and the situation we are in. My main point is you Europeans dislike all of us but not all of us are the same. And I`m sure there is a portion of Americans that are close minded. Oh well we (the human race) are destroying ourselves

NATattack, this happened to my mom when she tried to enroll me in pre-K. I think pre-K is geared towards children whose parents don`t have the means to teach their kids at home. Correct me if I`m wrong, but I think pre-K covers basic things like the alphabet, counting, and maybe even a bit of writing.

Unless you are uneducated or don`t speak English, you should teach these things to your kid by yourself. It`s not hard to teach a kid the alphabet and basic numbers. There`s oodles of songs and games; I don`t see why you couldn`t do it.

Props to immigrants trying to learn the language but to those who don`t care to I think they should have to! There are people who just come here to have babies and get citizenship believe me I have worked w people from Africa, Egypt, Mexico etc and they will not deny it! Perfect example I couldn`t enroll my daughter in Pre-K last year unless we met a low income requirement, were homeless, or didn`t speak any English. Umm this is an issue! I am American and pay my hard earned money over to the Gov and my American born child cannot get an education like some other kids bc she speaks ENGLISH and I can provide her a home??!! You would be pissed to people! Im not racist or prejudice but this really made me angry.

i feel like with spanish it`s different than moving to france and expecting them to speak english for you.
here, spanish has been integrated in our society since before we were even a country, and is as much a part of it as english, just on a smaller scale. a lot of america`s colonial period was a battle for land with the spanish and french. french isn`t around so much (except creole and stuff), but spanish is, and it has every right.

At least we can understand them.
I should clarify that...

The language barrier is terrible here, causing many problems, sometimes fatal. (Man with heart problems dead because another man doesnt understand when he was telling him where the pills were.)

They just want people living there to have a basic understanding of the English language.

I wouldn`t move to another country without learning the common language. Anyone who doesn`t, well, they`re just lazy.

@ yoda:

how does it make me a bigot to want foreigners who live in my country to know the dominant language? you think anyone would go out of their way to cater to you if you move to Mexico? no. if they`re going to move to America, they need to learn English just like I`d need to learn Spanish if I moved to Mexico. period.

I would say that if you`re moving to a new country you should find a way to learn the language. (Take classes, buy a book, make a friend who knows both languages, etc...) If you`re visiting a country, you should at least know a few basic phrases. (Hello, how are you, where is the bathroom, etc...) However, you don`t have to be this rude about it.

"But when some one speaks Spanish they get uncomfortable."

I think it has to do with commonality and assumptions. People assume a French speaking person is a tourist, while a Spanish speaking person is an immigrant or illegal alien. Yeah, prejudices suck, but they exist because they are based off of observations of what`s common.

Second: It annoys me how this only applies to people who speak Spanish for people ussually because I`ll go around speaking French (I`m originally from Quebec.) and people don`t really care. But when some one speaks Spanish they get uncomfortable.

While I do think it`s EXTREMELY important that we have a common language and that immigrants should make it a priority to speak it, there`s no need to be a dick about it.

The way I look at it, not learning the language, especially when there are so many free resources to do so, is unnecessarily handicapping yourself more than it`s inconveniencing those around you.

I remember seeing an immigrant from an Asian nation at a restaurant, talking privately with his son in English. What moved me by it was that he had a very thick accent, and obviously it would have been easier to speak to his son in his native tongue, but right there he was giving his child so much more opportunity by making sure he would be able to communicate clearly with his peers.

There are many Hispanic parents in this country that never learn English, and truly I feel sorry for those people rather than resent them.

realistically speaking... I came to this country only knowing 3 words, FOOT, CLOCK and OKAY. It took me a few years to learn the language. If you hear a person speaking something other than English, don`t assume they are not learning. It`s like playing the piano. p.s. There are a lot of American born people who don`t speak proper English. They don`t use proper spelling or punctuation. I.E. Rednecks. How is their spin on the English language any different from a person with broken English?

Maybe they need to realize that some people need to learn English, which I hear can take a pretty long time.
I understand intolerance for those who have lived in a country for a long time and make no effort to speak or learn the language, but when you live in a country with a history of accepting people from all over the world, many of who are escaping poverty, war, disease, whatever, you have to accept the fact that not everyone had the luxury of studying English before coming.
