Just more smoke screen like what the landing craft below are doing.

I`m pretty sure that`s the muzzle flash and smoke from one of the guns of the battleship in the background. If you look carefully, you can see the ship`s superstructure through the smoke.

From what I have seen so far the boats are comming at us and to my understanding the ring of smoke is a beach defence guns round blowing up in mid air causing shratinal stuff to go everywhere maybe?

"What did the tugboats do?"

Those aren`t tug boats. They are Amtraks. Amphibius armoured cars with tank tracks.

While I agree that it looks like flak, I can`t see them intentionally firing flak at that range so close to those small boats during an exercise!

Might be an 80mm flak gun, but I doubt it. Probably just a screenshot of weapons testing.

I`m not sure, but I bet its a smoke screen. Once it settles, the entire area will be blanketed in brown smoke.

"The white smoke is just engine exhaust" - Really? Are they running on steam engines? The enemey would see you coming from 100 miles away. What modern engine generates exhaust like that?

How about SMOKE GENERATORS???

"That`s just a smoke grenade going off."

No. Smoke Grenades do not send shrapnel flying like this. I don`t know what it is, but I know what it isn`t.

A Smoke Greande would need to stay on top of the water and be visible, not explode in one burst of smoke.

Oddly enough, the only thing that comes to mind is a flak burst. If you look at any aerial WW2 footage campaign, you will see AA guns pumping the skies full of flak, which sends shrapnel flying into everywhich direction, hoping that it gets caught in the engines of the bombers above and crash.

Flak proves cheaper and more efficient than firing rounds at a plane.

If you check out WW2 flak on Google, you will notice a similarity, although, I`ve never seen one myself, so I can`t say.

Either it is photoshopped or it is a simulation of a new type of weapon.

Its an ASM defensive measure, it basically is designed to destroy incoming anti-ship missiles.

Easy. The pic shows South Korean Marine Corps’ amphibious vehicles and the Navy’s Landing Platform Helicopter (LPH) ship ‘Dokdo’ (behind) taking part in a mock landing operation in the sea off Incheon, west of Seoul, September 15, 2010. The operation marked the 60th anniversary of the U.S.-led United Nations troops’ Incheon Landing Operations during the 1950-1953 Korean War. The image was taken by Jo Yong-Hak/Reuters :-)

The brown ring is called flak. See the shrapnel flying off of it?

This is likely a live fire military excessive.

Those are definitely Marine landing craft, and my guess is these are war games. The brown ring could be a wild goatse forming, but most likely a harmless explosive used to simulate live-fire exercises.

But I`m only in Marine ROTC, so don`t be too angry if I`m wrong.
