Is It Only Sexist When Men Do It?

Sure, this guy`s right. But I don`t get all animated about it like he is. The vast majority of women in the world aren`t FemiNazis, and the ones that are nobody likes and they end up lonely and surrounded by their cats, anyway.

Plus, there`s two sides to everything. I mean, look at all the gangsta rap where they talk about women like they`re worthless, but everybody thinks that`s cool.

Shouldn`t people be getting all worked up about that too?

Whatever, people are inconsistent and hypocritical. Nothing new there.

Here is what I found interesting: lesbian Sarah Gilbert (thumbs up to her!) realizes that it`s sexist to joke about cutting off a man`s penis, and the old bag that sucks on Ozzy`s manhood finds it hilarious.

@Angilion Still haven`t provided a link to the study. Provide data. Maternity care should not be counted as an exclusively as women`s spending, since it is also presumably spent to protect the life of the faultless fetus.
What I did say was that there is probably a logical reason why women receive more health care funds, which has nothing to do with sexism
As I said before, you are claiming that decades of very successful campaigning for healthcare for women *only* can`t have had any effect on what proportion of healthcare money is spent on women and what proportion is spent on men.

It`s a silly claim. Decades of very successful campaigning for healthcare for one sex only IN ALL AREAS OF HEALTHCARE and for social, political and therefore financial consideration for that one sex only resulted in priority being given to people of that sex. It`s not exactly a surprising result, is it? That was the whole point of it.

That is the logical reason why women receive more healthcare funding. Decades of very successful campaigning for preferential treatment was very successful.

You should be proud of your success, not trying to pretend it doesn`t exist.

I agree with him 100%. He calls men names too, by the way... but anyway, the fact is that woman cut off an ORGAN - AN ORGAN THAT YOU NEED - because her husband wanted a divorce, and can you really wonder why? And it`s sickening to think that people are laughing about it; it`s like laughing about torture and making jokes about that. If something like this happened, and men said something like those hosts, there would be a huge uproar.
Basically the woman that committed the crime and everyone else that thinks it`s okay and says `good for the woman!` is quite a bit more than messed up, and being a woman, I`d LOVE to slap anyone who promotes these kinds of messed up double standards and then bitches about gender equality.
Who cares that he yelled and used vulgarities? He got his point across fairly well.

There you go again! Trying to distort what I said. I never said that campaigning for women`s health issues had no effect. (They may well have campaigned successfully to get women prenatal care.) What I did say was that there is probably a logical reason why women receive more health care funds, which has nothing to do with sexism, and more to do with the public seeing the women`s fetuses as innocent helpless babies needing care.

Also where are you getting these percentages from? Still no link to the study so that I could actually have access to all of the information without your own personal bias.

"I can stop wasting my time on your position, though."

In other words if I refute what your saying and you can`t think of anything good to say back, you`re just going to ignore it to save face.
You can try to distort what I said all you`d like but, I never said that maternity care accounted for ALL of the budget. I said I would be willing to wager that it accounted for the majority of it.
OK, so that`s at least 38% of the entire healthcare budget on maternal care alone if you`re intending to refer to the sex-based discrepency or at least 44% if you`re intending to refer to the amount spent on women. Still ludicrous, either way.

You can carry on claiming that decades of very successful campaigning for healthcare for women *only* can`t have had any effect on what proportion of healthcare money is spent on women and what proportion is spent on men.

Your position is obviously ridiculous, but I can`t stop you holding it.

I can stop wasting my time on your position, though.

Throw in a couple of high risk pregnancies, women with preexisting conditions, drug addicts, super obese expecting mothers, expensive medicines that prevent the transmission of HIV/AIDs from mother to fetus, gestational diabetes, hypertension, expensive tests for genetic defects, and all the other million things that pop up ... and I`m sure it accounts for a sizable portion of the budget.

It very obviously and reasonably explains why the cost of women`s health care would exceed the costs of the men`s health care. For every health condition that strikes an older man there`s an older woman probably gets sick too, but pregnancy hits women exclusively, and it hits a younger demographic that men do not really have anything comparable to.

All that said, I support universal health care, everyone should be covered. Though I bet women would still cost more.

Genital mutilation imposed on children is obviously very wrong, but there are some variations in degree. Most female genital mutilation is on a par with most male genital mutilation, but there are a fair few cases in some areas where the degree of mutilation is much greater.

@Angilion Of course it`s the most obvious answer, and in this case it`s probably the correct one too. Of course I`d have to see the study you are talking about to actually be sure. (Provide?)

Do you know how much it costs for one woman to have a baby? A lot and if there are complications A LOT MORE. Not only is the actual delivery and hospital stay expensive, but you have to consider the 9 months of gynecological care pre-delivery, ultrasounds, and the post baby gynecological care as well.

Here are some very general statistics:

* Normal delivery no complications - £1174
* Casarian section with complications - £3626
* In-patient bed payment - £346-£420 per day
* Booking appointment - £145

The same goes for rape. A woman can seriously drat a guy`s life up by saying, "He raped me!" Now, the burden of proof has shifted from proving he did, to him proving he didn`t...because the poor, traumatized girl doesn`t need to suffer for his mistake.
Not saying that it doesn`t happen...but, men often do get unfairly punished by women...all in the name of the glory of feminism.
Feminism has done a horrible horrible thing to society. Sure, it was fantastic in the day and age when women couldn`t vote, and they were forced to be housewives, and weren`t allowed to own property. But, those days are long gone, and it`s time to move the drat on.

90% of abused women report their case to the police, while only 1% of abused men do the same. However, studies show that the ratio of abusive women to abusive men is approximately 50/50...(there are just as many women out there who physically, or mentally abuse their husbands as there are men who abuse their wives).
When it comes to sexual assaults, again, the statistic is around the 50/50...there are just as many female teachers who rape young boys as there are Catholic priests who do the same. Yet, when a man does it, there`s call for blood...when a woman does it, she just "misguided a poor, senseless youth."
Studies also find that in the cases of spousal homicide, while the vast majority are women who kill "abusive husbands", a startling number of those wives were emotionally abusive to their husbands. All she has to say, after she blows his head off, or chops off his dick is, "He was abusing me!" and everyone goes, "Awwww...poor woman!&

In my experience it`s generally not men that label women whores for sleeping around. Generally men love that poo! It`s generally women that slur one another. A man might label a woman a whore if she cheated on him. But similarly a women would not label a man a stud if he cheated on her!!

While women have the upper hand sometimes, men have the upper hand other times.

The comment the women made on The Talk wasn`t right. But men can tell things how it is and speak their mind and it`s okay. However when a woman does this she`s called a "[email protected]#$". A man can also go around and sleep with as many women as he wants and that`s okay. But, if a woman does this she`s labeled a "whore". Yeah men have to go to war IF there`s a draft (keep in mind there are women in the military by choice it`s not like men are the ONLY ones fighting). But women are the ones that are always responsible for carrying another human being in them for 9 months and giving birth. And a woman`s body is never the same afterwards. We also have to deal with instances of rape and getting pregnant from that said rape.

Men and women both have to deal with crappy things from the other gender. We both have times where it`s better to be one sex over the other.

I ask, in all seriousness, are there any attractive feminists? I don`t think there are. Only the ugly girls bother to complain about living in a sexist world - because the hot girls are busy enjoying all the benefits such `sexism` provides.

In America men have to fill out this fun little lottery ticket when they turn 18. If you`re the lucky winner they ship you off to some foreign land to possibly get shot in the face or get your legs blown off by a land mine. They call it Selective Service, and women don`t have to do it men do under threat of imprisonment.

So ladies. . .

Until you have to sign up for the draft, shave your head bald, and meet the same physical requirements as a man to join the military (women are required about 75% less situps, pushups, ect to join.)

Until then, just STFU about equal rights.

Name one right men have in the USA that women do not have.

You`re just repeating transparent excuses for your sexism. Nothing more than that.

In any case, feminism doesn`t even pretend to be what you claim. It`s not a general ideology about all groups - it`s specific to one group. It`s about more for that one group regardless of circumstances. It`s about power, not rights.

You`re describing something that doesn`t exist and giving it the name of a completely different thing that does exist.

Maternal care does not account for 75% of the entire adult healthcare costs for the UK. Come on, be serious.

I`m just saying that when group A has more rights than group B, feminists say expand group B`s rights to bring it up to an equal stance. If you don`t agree that that is a feminist stance, fine. That`s what I advocate, and I`ve been taught that that`s the goal of feminism. Or at least that it`s the ideal goal of feminism. Whether that is what all feminists adhere to, I cannot say.

But I stand for equality between all people, and I call myself a feminist. To be clear, I am an American citizen, but am a minority by race and a male by gender.

@Angilion I would like to see the study that you speak of. Personally I think that there should be universal health care for everyone, it makes sense to take care of chronic conditions early before they are expensive life threatening conditions that hospitals are obligated to treat, and really no one should be made to suffer.

However, if I had to wager a guess, I would bet that most of the money mentioned in the study went towards pregnant women or towards followup care for women who had recently had babies. If that is the case then some of that money was really going towards the fetus/baby`s care not just the woman`s care.

P.S. Not every feminist is involved in an organization that`s agenda is to keep money/support coming into their organization. Some women actually just want to protect their rights. There is nothing wrong with being a feminist.
There is no one movement or ideology that is feminism, a word which means different things to different people.
There is one thing that all strains of feminism have in common, the thing that defines feminism. Biological group advocacy.

You can`t have feminism unless you define people by their sex and advocate for more for female people only (although young boys can sometimes be included if they`re identified by their age rather than their sex).

Different strains of feminism can differ to various extents on some issues, up to and including being diametrically opposed to each other.

Different strains of feminism can be sexist to different degrees.

But they`re all feminism, or else they wouldn`t be feminism.

Here`s a good example from the UK:

Some years ago, the government of the time had a study done into healthcare spending on adults by sex, presumably to get some numbers to "prove" women were being discriminated against (it was a feminist government).

They found that over 88% of healthcare spending on adults went to women. Almost 8 times as much as went to men.

If feminism had anything to do with sexual equality, that study would have been a huge feminist issue. Massive institutionalised sexism in a matter of life and death! Feminist campaigns would have been demanding healthcare money was taken from women and given to men. Mainstream feminists would have been demanding an indefinite period of overt discrimination against women (in all things, not just healthcare) to compensate for female privilege.

In reality, of course, feminists continued to campaign for healthcare for women and children *only*, because feminism is a group advocacy id

Eh, I think he had a point about Sharon Osbourne`s comments and how they represent a double-standard, but he lost me when he started ranting about "feminism." There is no one movement or ideology that is feminism, a word which means different things to different people. I personally know several self-identified feminists who would be just as appalled as he is by Osbourne`s comments.

The belief that defining people by their sex, judging people by sexist stereotyping and giving preferential treatment to people of the "right" sex is sexual equality - that`s moronic.

While you`re making ridiculous stuff up, why not claim that it turns water into wine and generates free clean energy from the aether too?

Feminism is a biological group advocacy ideology. It differs from other ones solely in that it`s more successful. It does not, never has had and never can have anything to do with any kind of equality between any groups of people - it`s fundamentally wrong for that.
The only reason it`s called feminism is because a) that`s where it started, and b) men can`t understand inequality.
Nice "equality" there.

It`s called feminism because that`s what it is - a biological group advocacy ideology in which the favoured group is female people.

Just understand one thing from this. If Sharon Osbourne is laughing at the fact that a man got his dick chopped off by his crazy wife, then she ISN`T a feminist.

Feminism stands for equality between sexes, races, religions, gender, sexual orientation...everything. The only reason it`s called feminism is because a) that`s where it started, and b) men can`t understand inequality.

The belief that giving women, minorities or people of different orientations more rights is undermining the white man`s rights is moronic. Your only other option to promote equality is to let those with fewer rights stay where they are and start TAKING rights away from the straight, white male. And since NOBODY wants that (not if you`re in the majority anyway), elevating the rights of minorities is the way to go.

Here is the thing. For a guy to have sex he has to work for it. For a woman to have sex she just has to be there. Also for the woman there is much more risk involved. A guy has a lot of sex, and he`s awesome, cause guys are pretty much cool with that. A chick has a lot of sex and she`s a slut... because all the other chicks label her that.
I have yet to see a female be branded with the "slut" title by the guys she`s enjoying herself with. It`s always other females who feel the need to undermine those chicks due to their own insecurities.

American society is filled with double standards when it comes to sexes.

Women, if they choose to, get a free ride after marriage because they`re women. A woman can choose to quit her career in order to be a stay at home mom and live in the lap of luxury that her husband provides. If the husband tells his wife "I think you should keep working until we pay off our debts." Then he`s seen as a cheapskate. What`s worse is that she can now use this to her advantage in the event of divorce. Any lawyer worth their weight in male genitalia can spin her leaving her career as a choice imposed on her by her husband- that her husband is simply an old-fashioned sexist pig. So, the woman gets her way, gets half of everything the man owns if not more, and the man has no say in it whatsoever. It`s a lose-lose situation for men. In the eyes of society, women reign supreme.

The way I see it, women are allowed to mock men, but men are not allowed to mock women, because men have more of the power in the world. The minority is allowed to put down individuals of the controlling power, but if those in power put down individuals of the minority they are perceived as in the wrong. I`m pretty sure they figured this out regarding a guy named Sophocles. The government at the time said "let Sophocles make fun of us in his little play, let the people have a laugh. It will keep them happy and they are less likely to revolt and seize power from us. If we do not let them have their little laugh, they might actually resent us."

Are you really as stupid, bigoted and cowardly as you`re making yourself out to be? Or are you just trolling? I`m asking so I don`t waste any time deriding you if you`re just trolling. It looks like you`re trolling, since you`re spewing a mixture of lies, irrational prejudice and contradicting yourself, but it`s possible that you`re just a feminist and you`re being serious.

Anyone else think he kind of sounded like Patton Oswalt?

Also, @the_windy, that whole "women make 70% of what men make" is a bullpoo statistic. Think about it for a second.

I`m all for feminism and what not, but much like the AA, I can`t stand when women want to be treated equally to men, but when it comes to giving up the few advantages they have, (ladies first, opening doors for women, putting the seat back down after we pee, etc.) they throw a hissy fit. I`m all for women`s equality, but it has to go the other way too. Why don`t you women lift up the seat after you go? or open the door for us? we`ll still do all of those things for you, but you have to do them for us as well.

thanks. sorry for the rant, but that`s just my $0.02

i don`t think it`s sexism on the women on "the view" i just think it`s absolutely drating terrible. there`s no way in hell ANYONE should be okay with that kind of sadistic behavior. i sincerely hope the woman that did this rots in prison.

The point he made was that if the genders were reversed there would have been a huge reaction from special interest groups. That`s really all the evidence you need.

Also, he`s not suggesting people thought that it was a `good` thing, which some undoubtedly did, but that people are `OK` with it.

I find every story he mentioned just as disgusting, whether it was done to a girl or a guy. When I heard the penis story, I wasn`t laughing. I thought the woman should get life in prison because that`s a horrible thing to do to anyone. IDC what he did, it`s not her job to do something about it. I hadn`t seen the thing with Sharon Osborn before, that reaction is so disgusting. Does our society *in general* actually find the women to be okay or good in these situations, or is this man [who is rightfully angry about the reactions] taking the views of a few and simply stating that our society/feminism/whatever thinks that it`s okay? What people don`t realize about the various -isms is that they only have power when they`re being performed by those with power. Racism in the hands of a minority is just a prejudice. But when there`s a relative power imbalance, then racism has power. And currently standing at the top of all three of the most obvious power imbalances is the "straight, white male".

The problem with people believing that "If ___ can say/do ___, why can`t I?!" is that in basically all those cases, it`s a person who already has more power in society saying "Why isn`t society catering to me even more than it already is?!"

It`s a case of "I already get everything that I want, so I want more!". When a straight, white male asks why he can`t have a "straight pride" parade or a "Men`s history month" or whatever other thing he`s bitching about, he is ignoring the fact that every goddamn day is a "straight pride" parade taking place in a goddamn "men`s history month".

Sharon Osbourne thrives on controversy, and she`s a pretty horrible person in my honest opinion. But the average feminist isn`t saying "You go girl!" to the woman who cut off the dude`s junk. But maybe, just maybe, she`s saying "That`s what it`s like when a woman asks for a divorce and gets beaten nearly t

Well I am a white, bisexual female so I cover two of your angry boxes. And personally I share the same opinion as this angry `virgin` white heterosexual male. No, it is not because i have been outcast by females or am a traitor to my sex I just personally believe in EQUALITY. No pro women OR pro men. I`d like a world where sexism towards any gender was wrong. Where I would get in as much trouble for slapping a man across the face as he would from doing the same to me.

My problem is the whole "IF ____ DID THAT, SOCIETY WOULD FREAK OUT!"

In this specific case we can put `men` in the blank, but it is the same argument for white only scholarships, straight pride parades, and so on.

Just leave the differences out, they really don`t matter. A good person wouldn`t laugh at a *anyone* being mutilated, a kind person wouldn`t want to be a part of *any* exclusive club.

Equality is the easiest goal we will never achieve.

what he says, we already know. but, with women being the weaker sex in a physical manner (lets face it ladies, its true), they can get away with physical abuse towards a man.

look at it this way. a woman gets beat by her man and tells her friends, they find a way to get even (or call the cops if they are lame). but if a man cries to his friends about his girl beating him, they would laugh in his face.

This guy`s angry because he couldn`t get a girl to save his life and/or has been outcast by females for a large portion of time. Fact is there`s this thing called PRIVILEGE. There`s white privilege; wherein, at least in the US and many other parts of the world, being white puts you at an automatic advantage over others. There`s heterosexual privilege; wherein being a heterosexual means you don`t have to worry if you`re walking home from the bar with your significant other that you might be brutalized. More pertinent to this story; there is MALE privilege. Wherein MALES are given preference over females in almost all places on earth in almost any circumstance save for times when another man is thinking with his genitalia and thus gives preference to a woman. This white, straight male really has no reason to be bitching. While what the woman did is abhorrent and Sharon O. was wrong, "isms" aren`t equal when rights aren`t.

Well putt, there`s is sexism going on.
In general women don`t ask men out, women in general expect to not pay for dates. And so on.
But then again, what is really equal in a society with two different genders with different upbringings and expectations put on them?
All you can really do is to not take part in the games people play that you think are silly and taken too seriously.

I agree with this guy and am pretty outraged at the reaction from some of the hosts and the audience of that show. Like he said if this happened to a woman what the hell do you think reactions would be if a bunch of guys laughed about it on national tv. Now I`m not supposed to say anything rash because that would be sexist so that`s exactly what I will do because I believe in the equality of people on this earth regardless of race and gender. Those women from the tv show should realize that what they have said and did was wrong and does not help portray the image and views of equality that many women have lobbied hard for so that they can be respected as equals where they were once not before.

I have to agree with him.Sexism only seems to be whatever women say it is.That`s sexism.Feminism was supposed to be about women getting equal treatment.Seems fair. But what they actually seem to want is the same consideration guys give guys PLUS all the extra consideration we give women. That`s not equality,it`s superiority.Of course, noticing that is "sexist".Black/white relations have become similar in that if a black guy kills a white guy it was a robbery but if a white guy kills a black guy it HAD to be a hate crime. It`s not to the same degree as the sexism issue, though, since the black guy will likely get a lot more jail time.

There`s no excuse or justification for what the butcher did, and Osbourne should have condemned it.

But if you`re asking why there`s a double standard here, why the audience found this crime a little exciting, it`s pretty understandable.

The relationship between men and women is plagued by lots and lots of male terrorists, who believe they have the right not only to control women`s lives, but to physically injure them and even rape them at a whim. Their view has been largely supported by religion and cultural mores. And the men who don`t subscribe to this view (which are clearly the majority) are content to enjoy the privileged status this terrorism affords them. So women as a group feel bullied and subjugated.

Thus, when we hear a woman uses violence against an apparently abusive man, it fits a "rising up against your oppressors" narrative, and bullied women naturally find that exciting.

A man using violence is the bully.
