I-A-B OPEN FORUM Communique: T-Shirt Design Stuff

Submitted by: fancylad 6 years ago in

Hey I-A-B,

Maybe you remember (or maybe you"ve smoked to the point where you"ve destroyed your short-term memory), but the Design I-A-B"s Next T-Shirt (sponsored by the cool guys at ShirtCrave.com) voting ended this morning. Because I want to make this official, I"m taking the weekend to count and verify the votes. I"ll also be posting all 75 or so submissions up on the Fancylad"s Super-Terrific Happy Funtime I-Am-Bored.com Page so keep an eye out for that. Winner announced Monday morning!

And for all the nerds not at Comic-Con and staying inside with your computer in an attempt to beat the heat, I bring you Open Forum Friday--the Balls-Hot edition.

Laters on the Menjay, Fancylad

Fancy gives up the details on the Design I-A-B"s New T-Shirt thing as well as calls an open forum. The Balls-Hot Edition

Pigeons in a truck!

Back to the pigeons
Scale goes up when they take off,
But weight doesn`t change.

Jumping exerts force
Force must be balanced by truck
In opposite way

Pigeons go upwards
So the force must go downwards
Scales show more weight

Then whilst in freefall
The pigeons exert no force
Weight less than normal

To keep themselves up
The pigeons push air downwards
With flapping of wings

Assume they hover
The force they exert on air
Is equal to weight

Truck is enclosed
The air has nowhere to go
Must hit the bottom

Air hits the bottom
Which pushes down on the truck
Weight balances out

So in conclusion
Whilst weight changes in process
Overall, the same

Physics and Haikus
Sometimes hard to think about
Doing both is fun.

In that example, the two concepts are `teacher` and `students` - opposite ends of the spectrum. The `cutting word` is `done` - signifying the end of one phase, and the start of another. The seasonal reference is `Finals` - an event which only happens at a specific time of year.

Most of you are failing Haiku 101 I`m afraid - you see, haiku isn`t just about the number of syllables...

- 3 short lines
- A haiku must represent at least two distinct ideas or themes.
- There must be a `cutting` phrase separating them.
- There must be a seasonal reference.
- No rhyme or metaphor

If your English teacher told you that haiku is simply 17 syllables in lines of 5-7-5, then he/she needs to be fired.

Teacher`s work is done;
Students prepare for Finals.
`Teach` should sit it too.

Though I believe the H2O in your example is in liquid form.
Water doesn`t meet the requirement because it doesn`t have a crystalline structure. Ice does however. It`s a perplexing issue, sort of like the birds in the truck.

As a fledgling Biologist, i`d argue the last point with you to a certain degree. One example of H2O being formed in plants is through the Krebs Cycle in respiration.

But I guess when it`s formed naturally it`d be a mineral, under those conditions.

And lol Davy. Fine. :P
0

Oh and is not man made.

So cubic zirconium fits all of the requirements except the man made one/nature ones. And coal is an organic substance.

Yeah trp, the requirements for a mineral are:
Crystalline structure - ice, particularly snow forms in hexagon crystals.
Definite chemical composition - H2O
Found in nature - duh
And is Inorganic - water is not formed from animals or plants

Is Coal the one that`s juts peat compressed over time by it`s own weight?

Artichoke, I don`t know. I recently took a geology class and though yes, it is useless but it`s interesting.

Did you know ice formed in nature is considered a mineral. Whereas coal you would think is a mineral isn`t.

Well davymid, I sort of explained it in my next post.

The actual weight doesn`t change but the scales do.

It`s cute you kept that picture.
Now how`s about you find yourself a wife
0
Reply
Male 2,238
But Davy, if the birds were in midair, they wouldn`t produce any downward force upon the scale, because they`d be flapping their wings, thus producing enough upward force to counteract gravity.

Ah, but isn`t the truck, in scientific terms, a closed system? Let`s assume it`s airtight.

Again, I genuinely don`t know the answer to this. Physics PhDs have given me both stories.

0
Reply
Male 3,625
Yes jay, but when someone jumps, and runs, the weight is that of gravity, even that little jump, plus your original weirght. It would be like comparing the force of a stomp to that of a normal step. When you stomp more force is applied and the illusion of more weight is shown.

Male 2,238
**fifth of the weight of the truck
0
Reply
Male 2,238
Well let`s say you have a thousand birds. Each bird weighs what, 10oz? So that`s 10,000 ounces and 625lbs. A truck big enough to hold all of them would weigh probably 3 or 4 tons, which is about 7700lbs. So even if all the pigeons were dumb enough to fly straight at the roof, and even if they had to produce their own body weigh worth of force to jump, I doubt it`d tip the truck `cause it`d still only be about a fifth of the weight needed.
0
Reply
Male 315
I`d figure the truck would have weight A when it gets on the scale. A - Weight of the Birds after the gunshot (considering birds use their wings to get off the ground and not their totally muscular legs there shouldn`t be any jump in weight when they launch) and A when they land.

I agree with Artichoke. Let the pic be posted!

davymid, I would say that the latter. The vehicle would increase in weight then decrease to that lower than if they were at rest.

But I would also say that birds don`t really weight that much so the decrease and increase in weight would be so insignificant that it wouldn`t matter.
0

Male 87
It would be like pushing on a car you`re sitting in, nothing would happen.
0
Reply
Female 198
Terp, but would the strength of those pigeons taking off in flight lift the truck into the air? If not, the truck would still put the majority of the weight on the scale.
0
Reply
Male 2,238
Well the birds aren`t gonna register on the scales when they`re in the air, surely? That`d be like saying your weight would register on the scales if you hovered in the air above some scales, yeah?

Alright, let`s get dis sh*t kicked off.

A lorry/truck/van is carrying a load of pigeons, sitting on perches inside the truck. The truck pulls onto a weigh-bridge to measure its weight. Halfway through the weighing process, someone shoots a gun, and all the birds instantaneously take flight, so they`re all airborne.

Question: How do the weight-measuring scales behave throughout this scenario? Do the scales show the exact same weight, before and after the gunshot? Do they instantaneously increase in weight as the gun fires and the pigeons push down to take flight, then decrease when the pigeons take to the air? Make a sketch-graph if you like...

Caveat: I`ve no idea what the correct answer is. I`ve asked several physics professors this question and never gotten a clear answer.

Over to you, I-A-B.
