Given that she`s got a huge dedicated fanbase who have made her rich and famous, I don`t think it`s fair to say that Stephanie Meyer can`t write well enough to have the audience side with the protagonist. I think she writes to suit her audience and thus her success. Having fans siding with different characters is a key part of the ongoing marketing of the product. Since the large majority of her audience are lust-soaked female adolescents and young women, "OMG JACOB IS LIKE SO HOT!!11!!1!" is exactly the right attitude for her to be writing for.

It can`t be luck that she hits the target so often, so it must be skill.

Harry Potter is all about confronting fears, finding inner strength, and doing what is right in the face of adversity. Twilight is about how important it is to have a boyfriend. - stephen king

I would also like to note that when the protagonist who is supposed to have the audience`s support (edward) has his girlfriend stolen from him by some rando werewolf, twilight fans become split on which guy to side with. Why? Ask any twilight fan: "BECAUSE OMG JACOB IS LIKE SO HOT!!11!!1!" Stephanie Meyer cant write well enough to have the audience side with the protagonist.

@Gerry... I read the books. I liked them when I read them. I was just pointing out that they`re a simplistic work of fiction--just like Star Wars and James Bond and Star Trek.

They`re like the romance novels of fantasy...nothing really deep to dig out of them, just the initial entertainment value.

Being entertained is well and good, but I`ve gotten to the point where I put down books when I notice that they`re following a plotline that I`ve already read before. When I realize that we`re playing in the "safe" sandbox where everything turns out okay in the end.

It just doesn`t really do it for me anymore, and that`s the sort of story that Harry Potter is.

P.S. Yes, Harry dies, but he comes back like five pages later. JK didn`t even give us a plot-arc-spanning cliffhanger. He dies, we follow him to limbo, he comes back. He`s Harry Potter so he can`t die for good.

Honestly, I would have appreciated the books more if Harry died for goo

@ DrProfessor

I feel sorry for your dried, shriveled soul that cannot see the faintest glimps of joy even in a simple thing like Harry Potter.

"The good guys are pure, the bad guys are despicable"
You mean like Star Wars? Or James Bond? Or Star Trek. Or need-I-Go-On?

"never once do you fear for the safety of Harry, Ron, or Hermione"
um.... Harry dies.

"there`s no realistic moral ambiguity to be found."
Morals are not ambiguous to all of us, not mine anyway. But how about Mrs. Malfoy {Good Bad Guy} or Snape the Bad Good Guy ?

Bottom line - you are dissapointed because you want it to be something it`s not.
It`s not War And Peace, dude.

@kazai710- Well, in response I`d like to point out: is there anyone who disputes whether Dumbledore was Good, or Malfoy was Bad?

Sure, Malfoy hadn`t developed the stones necessary to pull the trigger, but anyone who isn`t a sociopath has to push themselves over that hurdle.

And as for Dumbledore..it`s been a while since I read that final book, but from what I remember it was Voldemort who made Harry into a horcrux, and the only possible way to defeat Voldemort for good would involve destroying all of his horcruxes...i.e., killing Harry. Not Dumbledore`s choice. With Snape, as well... Snape begged Dumbledore to save Lily`s life, at any cost. He chose to switch sides for her sake. Which makes Snape a relatively gray character, himself though not on a very convincing level. He`s evil, but his achilles heel (Lily) causes him to act differently.

The first book in the ASOIAF series was recently turned into a tv show "Game of Thrones". Fantastic series, th

I humbly disagree, DrProfessor.
The Good guys were not all good
And the Bad Guys not all bad.
Dumbledore planned Harry`s death since he was born. Took advantage of Snape, practically Black mailing him into service.
Draco couldn`t kill Dumbledore. He couldn`t kill harry.

There was lots of gray between good and evil.
Although, I might check out that "A Song of Ice and Fire" Book... need something new to read.

Harry potter is a sophomoric story patched together out of tropes, archetypes, and heaping doses of deus ex machina.

The good guys are pure, the bad guys are despicable, and there`s no realistic moral ambiguity to be found. A few minor or already old-as-f*ck characters are offed for the purpose of drama, but never once do you fear for the safety of Harry, Ron, or Hermione because they`re the heroes of this story and heroes never die.

Harry Potter is, at its most elemental level, a novel for teenagers, and quite obviously so.

Go pick up the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series and tell me how you feel about Harry Potter afterward. Just do it.

P.S. The books are pretty much summed up by quidditch. A game with lots of players who can get hurt and have all of their nice little fun, but barring some monstrous playing, really only the actions of the seeker (Harry, of course) mean anything at all.

If you want young adult vampire stories, I suggest the Morganville Vampires series. I read them because I`ve read the author`s more adult-orientated series and I was curious. They`re a good read. Book a day sort of thing, but not limp sparkliness.

I haven`t stolen Twilight, so I don`t know how good it actually is, but judging by the "general hubub" (not just this) it sounds like something that would bore be to death.

As for HP... it`s interesting, but it`s too juvenile for my taste. I once found it cool, back when books 1 to 3 came out.

I`ll see the movie, but only because it looks good.

I`ve read the Twilight books (way before the Movies)and they did leave out a lot.

Don`t blame Stephanie Meyer, if anyone is to blame its the Screen Writer Melissa Rosenberg, she was the one that wanted to change the characters and turn them into a f-ing characters not even worthy of a show on the CW. She didn`t stay true to the books and wanted quick laughs and cheesy lines.

I`ve always thought HP was much better, but I liked Twilight until the last book. It had a plot comparable to a fanfic. Bella getting pregnant [when it was previously established that it wasn`t possible], Bella getting abused badly during sex, the pregnancy accelerating faster than normal speed, Bella turning into a vampire and not having the normal side-effects that every other new vampire has besides her, Jacob falling in love with the baby, the baby growing up super fast and being intelligent when it couldn`t even talk, no fighting happening at the end despite the whole book leading up to it. I`m sure there`s more, but that`s one book I never plan on reading twice :x

All I can say is I`m glad someone made "Priest". I`m aware there is no shortage of vampire movies, but this one at least made an interesting twist on things. Best of all, no sparkling, and plenty of blood, which is what one would expect to see in a vampire movie.

"...or adults becoming obsessed by childrens books/films."

a good portion of those adults were children when the series began so you can`t blame them. Unless you`re talking about the creepy 40+ women then yes, that`s sad.
