"If the US stayed out of WW2 Hitler would`ve been able to invade Britian. Therby securing the Western front and changing the war on the Eastern front because he could`ve then put way more troop Eastward. "

Hitler scrapped an invasion of the UK before the USA entered the war. But good try.

ok, here`s the thing. as probably been already mentioned, the cold war was never fought. it was just a title for heating tension between the US and the USSR. no fighting ever took place. there have been little quarrels, but that was basically just vietnam and korea. you can`t include the cold war on this one.

also i didn`t do the math, but are you taking into account for overlapping dates? or are you counting them twice?

yes we are a young country that has fought a lot of wars. a lot of these wars we were rather reluctant to go into (e.g. WWI and WWII). The civil war was necessary to keep the union together.

for much of the 20th and not 21st century, we Americans have been urging this country to calm the f down. but as the world around us becomes scarier, that is tough to do.

Here`s a little more info:

Operation United Shield was from Jan 9 to March 5, 1995 and was USA with 7 other countries to make sure UN Peackeeping Troops were safely evacuated from Somalia.

Operation Determined Falcon was USA and 13 other countries and all we did was fly some jets and bombers around near Kosovo just flexing our
muscles a little bit to get them to chill.

The Cold War?!?!?! Really, hahaha!!!!

What about Korea? Guess that`s why it`s known as the "Forgotten War" but the retard that made this put Operation Determined Falcon where they flew around saying "C`mon, try something, I dare ya!"

oh for f*ck`s sake you could do this for just about any country, and for muuuuuch longer. China anyone? About, what, 4000 years of history, and probably 3500 of that was fighting in some way or another. And England? Hell, every king had to fight off some dude trying to take his throne, and that dude prolly had an army, so the kind sent his army...etc etc etc. War(s) is/are a part of nations, that`s that.

Not to mention it`s not like we were the ONLY side in any of these fights. It does take two to tango you know.

This is dumb as all f*ck getout

Wasn`t there a Border war between Canada and the USA. Somewhere up in the Oregon/Washington area over a trading post?

Also 1914 General Pershing attempt to lead US forces against Pancho Villa and President Buchanan`s "Blunder" 1857 in the Utah/Mormon war to subjugate those filthy polygamists. Oh and the Kansas vs. Missouri War. Oops I forgot another. the 1801 - 1804 Barbary Pirates war. Therefore add another 8 years to the count.

Also Korean war add another 4 or 5 give and take.

I will personally pay the sum of 5 Canadian dollars (ACT NOW! CURRENTLY WORTH MORE THAN AMERICAN DOLLARS!) to any country who invades the US. And I don`t mean some sneaky terrorist attack. Pick a fight with them. Just let them blow off some steam. If I have to play one more game about how they "saved the world" in the world wars and their current ones, I will snap.

Not gonna make a big fuss out of this, because you got the gist of it, I think; but it was not "the nationalist period". It was more the period of kings and nobility, and their bickering (using their armies and ties with other kings and their armies as the snowballs for the European-wide, and to some extent, also Asian-wide, snowballfight that spanned several centuries) knew no end.

In the past 3500 years there has been roughly 280 years of peace, worldwide. That`s 8% of world history in peace.

Even if this graph was accurate, and of the past 235 years of American history, only 36 were peace, that`s 8.8% of American peacetime.

America has more peacetime on average than the entire world.

If the US stayed out of WW2 Hitler would`ve been able to invade Britian. Therby securing the Western front and changing the war on the Eastern front because he could`ve then put way more troop Eastward.

As for the war of 1812 it was about more than expansion Britian was seriously hampering our overseas trade and taking our merchant sailors to use in the royal navy along with getting American Indian tribes to fight us. After the war these matters were settled and trade grew/ I wouldn`t consider that a loosing.

1812 - 2 years
Mexican American War - 2 years
civil War - 4 years
Spanish American War - 4 months
WWI - 1 year
WWII - 4 years
Vietnam - 8 years
Grenada - 2 months
Panama - 1 month
Gulf War - 7 months
United Shield - 2 months
Enduring Freedom - 10 years

That adds up to just over 31 years of war in 228 years as a country.

Someone using everything they can to inflate the number of years the U.S. has been at war.
Can`t count the Revolutionary war since we weren`t a country until it ended.
Mexican American War was 2 years, not 13.
Spanish American war was 4 months, not 2 years.
The American Indian Wars were not real wars but a series of conflicts.
Can`t count all of World War 1 since the U.S. didn`t enter until 1917.
Can`t count the Cold war at all.
Vietnam is hard to classify but combat troops were deployed in 1965, not 1962.
Grenada was 2 months, not 2 years.
Panama was 1 month, not 1 year.
Gulf War (Desert Storm) was 7 months, not 2 years.
Operation United Shield was 2 months, not 4 years. The 3 years in Somalia was a U.N. action, not a U.S. war.
Operation Determined Falcon was an air show, not a war.

if the u.s. stayed out of the war we would have been free from soviets as hitler could have focused on his eastern fronts and taken them out (no cold war, no terroism etc)..but the u.s. as usual likes to come in at the end of a war pretend they did anything useful and then split all of the losing country`s gold and wealth among themselves

Yeah I got to agree with LandoGriffin. The "Cold War" was no more a war than the war on drugs or poverty. Indeed we poured money into these wars but no bombs were dropped or troops deployed. The contras in Nicaragua were more war-like than the cold war. Which turns out was all smoke and mirrors anyway.

"Because our fearless leaders love sticking our noses in bullsh*t that isn`t our problem."

It`s that kind of thinking that keeps this world how it is - AT WAR!

We are one world, we have to live together, just because were separated by a thousand miles or more doesn`t mean a thing. Why don`t you look at serious crime rates in 3rd world countries. Just because you don`t share our ideals doesn`t mean rape and murder is okay just because your not in our country.

United World or death.

Perpetual war, it keeps the stock market going. War is profitable. And yes, the cold war could be considered a war because trillions were spent on preparing for something that never happened. Up until 1996, the US spent $5.5 trillion JUST on nuclear weapons (most of which were later dismantled).

I count only 66 years at war.

Mexican American war was 1946-48...not 36-48

Indian American wars were a series of battles, not a "war" with a begining and end...doesn`t count. you might as well call Georgetown University a "war".

Cold War - really?

Invasions of Grenada and Panama did not take up entire "years". They were brief battles.

This is completely misleading. It`s actually closer to 75 years, as you can`t count the Cold War as a "war," since there was no conflict. It`s also incorrect to count the Indian American Wars, as this was not a constant conflict.

It can also be said that the more recent ones are not "wars," since we are fighting inanimate ideals, such as "terror." This is like saying we`ve been fighting the War on Drugs and counting it on the graphic. I cannot disagree that we are fighting, but it`s difficult to say we`re "at war," since no one can definitively say who we are at war with.

Of course, this can also be said about Vietnam, since we never declared war. So, it might even be said that we can`t count that as a war, either. It was most definitely a conflict, but it`s difficult to use the word "war" when referring to it.

Missing on the list: Korean War
