metalmOrgan dont know where you learned to read but it states clearly, in the first paragraph, that the sport was called soccer for over 18 years before the first recorded mention of it as football.

How does the term `Soccer` Predate the term `Football` if it is derived from `Association Football`

Soccer did come from "association", but it was never the proper name for the sport ... EVER. It was a nickname, its like saying American footballs real name is "handegg".

Also, the origin of the name Cricket, is about as exciting as he game itself.

I`m sure someone will wiki this and try to disprove me but the british also invented BASEBALL - previously colled ROUNDERS... which is a girls game!

...so by your logic of *it was called soccer first so ha*, you have to acknowledge that baseball was called rounders.

...otherwise agree that the country that developed the sport/ its rules has the right to call it what they want.

The football info is somewhat misleading; the term Soccer indeed originates from England, but football was just a common a term. Soccer was sometimes used to differentiate it from Rugby, but Rugby football was rather quickly simply called Rugby for most, and thus the term football for Association Football became the most used. The reason it is so prevalent in the US is because American Football (Handegg) was already popular in the US when regular football was on the rise.

aside from that the list focused mostly on American sports facts and such, it would have been nice to see a more global variety.

That would make some sense if you don`t call American football just "football".

If you do, then you`re obviously a hypocrite.

You`re basing what you claim is correct usage on slang used by a small minority of students, as opposed to the common usage. That`s a sign that you`re scrabbling for a reason.

It`s true that any game involving feet and a ball can be called "football". It`s also true that if any such game is to be called just "football", without any qualifiers, it makes most sense for it to be the version played most widely and most often.

If I saw that it was normal in the USA to refer to their version of football as "usaball" or "ameriball", then I`d concede that you have a bit of a point.
