I speed, but I do it safely. Never with passengers in my car and never in residential areas or in the city where cars/people pull out in front of you. Drivers who are observant and know their car`s limits can safely speed, the real danger are the unobservant drivers who pull out in front of cars, drive to slow, tailgate, and do other actions which are more dangerous but aren`t as policed as speeding. There`s no problem driving the speed limit, but when you go the speed limit in the passing lane with another car in the other lane going the same speed, that`s when it`s a problem. Also, in california, in order to get your ambulance driver`s license all you have to do is take a written test and it`s yours. So you can`t really count on them to be better drivers at high speed.

"You need a scientific study to convince you that a car which drives erratically right by you for an extended period of time is more likely to hit you than one which simply passes you by."

Yes I do.

Because assumptions without supporting evidence are what get us ridiculously low speed limits and speed cameras everywhere.

Support your claim with evidence, or don`t make the claim.

Lol, my car is fast but I don`t speed. If some jerk tailgates me, I slow way down until he tries to go around. Then I gun it and show his dumb
@ss how fast a real car is.

American roads are ridiculously slow anyway for the size and number of lanes you have

@Musuko42 I`ll give it to you, you`ve got a knack for picking two meaningless words and using them to ignore the rest of a point. So I`m going to do the same to your post.

"At speed" can mean any speed. When I`m traveling "at speed" of 5 mph, my bike does turn right when I turn the handlebars right. Your analogy is invalid.

No, I get it Musuko. You need a scientific study to convince you that a car which drives erratically right by you for an extended period of time is more likely to hit you than one which simply passes you by. I`d go looking for it if I actually believed you were that dense.

Seems you missed my point: which was that without knowing the specific details, you can`t make statements like you`re asking me to make.

You ask whether two cars being closer to eachother will increase the risk of an accident. Well, two parked cars are going to have very different accident likelihoods than two cars going 100mph.

So care to refine your scenario a little more?

i usually go 65 on the 60mph freeway and will get into the passing lane only to pass and get back over when possible, but i am happy to slow down to 60 once the jerk behind me gets up on my ass. i almost got deliberatly sideswiped by someone i did this to, so i dont f around when i have my kids in the car with me, but even if it is a control thing, it is the agressive driver that is responsible. what did i do wrong, go the speed limit? i still will get over at the next opportunity, but im not speeding up because when i do, they still ride my butt, so it doesnt solve my problem. yes dont cut off a speeding vehicle to slow them down, but dont ram a car going the speed limit because you want to speed either. DEAL WITH IT

Like I said, it`s about power and control. At least you`re honest about it. It just sounds retarded when someone says it`s safety reasons. How f-ing safe do you feel with some raging a-hole trying to drive their car up your ass?

"so I`ll give my common sense take on it."

Common sense is neither common, nor does it make sense.

What might seem right when looked at with common sense is often antithetical to objective reality.

For example, common sense usually leads people to think that, when travelling at speed, if you turn the handlebars of a motorcycle right, you will go right. Common sense in this case would lead you to the brick wall situated to your left.

I have no time for your "common sense" sir.

@Musuko42 I don`t have the time to look this up right now, so I`ll give my common sense take on it.

Blocking in a speeder would be more dangerous than letting him pass, because you`re adding another variable into the situation. If you sit in the right lane and let him pass, the only variable acting upon the speeder is his ability to control the vehicle in the current conditions.

However, when another aggressive driver challenges him by blocking/boxing his vehicle in, the conditions are suddenly changed. The situation now involves two vehicles and two drivers committing unsafe acts, both trying to act and react against the other.

Speed by itself is never the cause of a crash, its a magnifying factor. Your vehicle doesn`t automatically crash at a certain speed, something induces the accident and the speed enhances the outcome. Blocking in a speeder is a deliberate attempt at inducing an accident.

Test question Musuko, just to see if this is still worth arguing with you about. The closer two cars are to each other, the more likely they are to have an accident. True or false?

@Brassbull

Yes, that`s very nice, but we weren`t debating whether blocking the unsafe driver was safe or not: we both agree that it`s unsafe.

The statement of yours I was challenging was that blocking the driver is LESS safe than allowing them past to speed.

Your link, while informative, does not answer that question.

The 6 most common causes of automobile crashes.

- Aggressive tailgating

- Deliberately preventing another driver from moving their vehicle

- Changing lanes frequently or in an unsafe manner

- Failure to yield the right of way

- If you cannot change lanes and an aggressive driver is behind you, stay where you are, maintain the proper speed and do not respond with hostile gestures

If you cannot change lanes...

Yeah, speeding is dangerous, but by keeping them boxed in you`re compounding the elements which would lead to a traffic accident.

Besides, what`s the point of speeding anyway? For the thrill?

All I can think of is that the people who feel the need to speed are the people who aren`t getting a regular supply of freaky, wall-rattling, bed-breaking sex.

The poor souls.

"Someone speeding with the lane all to themselves vs. someone zigzagging through spaces in between cars that are barely large enough to accommodate their vehicle. Which sounds more dangerous to you?"

What "sounds" more dangerous to you and I may not actually *be* more dangerous.

You`re just making an unfounded judgement, based on your own guesswork, rather than on any actual imperical measure.

In any case, your question is moot: the danger in both of those scenarios is the fault of the crazy speeding driver, and not the fault of the person driving steadily at the speed limit.

I donno Brassbull, if they smash and burn behind me, I`m not the one who`s dead. If they pass me and crash ahead of me, I`m more likely to get squished too. Or at least be late to something. Besides, I like to drat with people on the freeway. (not all the time, quite often I let them pass, but sometimes...)

On what firm evidence are you basing this rather bold statement of truth?

If highway safety was really the concern for some of you, slowing down and boxing someone in would just agitate them and they would be more likely to do something to cause an accident while trying to get out from behind you. No, what it`s really about is power. You see someone doing something you don`t like and you want to have control over that behavior. But you`re not the police or the highway patrol. You have no authority, and won`t be seen as any kind authority. The truth is acting like one on the road is more likely to get someone killed than just letting some speed demon be on their way.

I didn`t have my cellphone with me so calling emergency services would`ve envolved me finding a phone first, while driving at the legal limit ofc. And when I do contact them I should just wait where I am for another 10-15 minutes and after all that they still have to drive him all the way to the hospital.

I didn`t drive like a maniac, but faster where I could see fit. If you were in that situation you`d probably do the same...
I`m just trying to point out that blocking people on the road is just as illegal as speeding, you can`t take law into your own hands unless you`re a vigilante. If someone is breaking the law it`s upto police and the court to decide, not some redneck in a jeep.

I love this sticker, but I dont think it would fit on my helemt...

When you drive a motorcycle, you can pull a wheelie, pull up in front of Steelgrid as you kick his mirror off on the way past, (and maybe kick in his door) pop the clutch for some rubber burning fun and drive off as you flick the finger laughing, to arrive at your destination 2 hours earlier than the `I own the road and like acting like Im a traffic cop` type of drivers.

You should see how humble and apologetic these types of driver get once you are on a bike, right next to them, able to mess them up if you choose to. Very different attitude usually.

You`re trying to rush your way to the hospital and some douche (like you) who thinks he`s the right hand of God and starts casting out judgement, forcing you to stay behind him at the legal speed limit, while someone in your car is fighting for his life."

So you think it`s acceptable to put other people`s lives at risk in order to save your friend`s life?

I`ll answer that for you: no, no it is not.

If it`s that much of an emergency, call the emergency services. They`re trained to drive at speed, and they`re allowed to do so.

You are not. Don`t do it.

Sure, it sucks for your friend. But it`ll suck even more for the person you kill when you plough into their car at high speed.

Steelgrid, I hope you notice you are in the minority here-- I am not down with aggressive drivers, but the left lane is for passing. If you are not going faster than a car to your right, you should not be in the left lane-- the speed has very little to do with it-- relative speed is all that matters.

The problem with this sticker is you are assuming the moron in the left lane actually looks in his/her rearview mirror once in a while. Bad assumption.

Well that sticker CAN be cool... but only on the right car. If it were some Mercedes SLK or the likes, whatever. Being faster (and willing to drive that fast) gives you the right to sport such a thing. But this looks a bit like family car #523123, letting other people laughg at them while waving at them :)

But maybe this only applies in countries where it`s allowed and possible to drive fast.

I`d say this sticker isn`t just for speeders, but for people who actually drive without their heads up their asses. I`d never put it on my car, but I agree with it. Of course, if you`re in a line of traffic, then this sticker holds no weight. But it still amazes me every day how many people I drive next to who don`t see any further than their windshield.

This argument reminds me of a beautiful lesson in karma a jerk driver learned one day. I was doing the speed limit of 55 on a two lane highway. I approach a car doing roughly 45-50 in a passing area. The lane is clear, I go to pass. However, as soon as I start to make my move, they put on their left turn signal and start to slow down. I break off my pass, they turn the signal off and keep driving. This happens once more before I manage to get around them. Then they decide to tailgate me.

However, fate had a sense of humor that day, because a minute or two later a deer jumped into the road in front of me. I slam on my brakes, the car behind doesn`t. In the end, my trailer hitch slammed through their bumper and radiator, while my bumper smashed their bumper, hood, and lights into useless chunks of metal and plastic. No damage done to my truck, except for needing a $5 can of touch up paint to fix the scratches on my bumper.

Going to have to side with the `move over` crowd on this one. It`s safer to go the REAL speed limit (i.e.- `go with the flow`) than it is to camp a lane and disrupt the flow.

By far one of the stupidest stickers I`ve seen, and I`ve seen Calvin pee on just about every automobile logo there is.

If your goal is to show everyone around you that you that you are a self centered ass I suppose this sticker is probably right up your alley.

Sometimes there are cars in front of you. It is just a part of driving. Once they finish passing, they will usually move. Sometimes they don`t so you have to pass on the right, not ideal but it takes a few seconds and you can go on about your day as if nothing happened, unless you want to dwell on it. But why would you want to focus on something so minor?

Steelgrid, stop being a dick. I have been in passing lane many times, doing the speed limit, with some dippoo in front of me doing less than that. They just drive wherever they feel like it. If it`s you driving the speed limit in the passing lane, expect me to be on your ass until you move or I can pass on the right.

I WANT that sticker!

Hell yeah! Slow drivers camping in the left lane pisses me off to no end. The worst was when I was driving on an almost empty freeway in the left lane doing about 15 over the speed limit, and someone comes down the on ramp way ahead of me, gets into the middle lane and sits there with their left blinker on. As I`m approaching, I figure they accidentally left it on, because they`d been in the center lane for a while and there was nobody else in front of them. But no, when I`m about 20 feet away, they cut right in front of me, going considerably slower than I am, forcing me to hit the breaks. I rode their ass and flashed my brights but they wouldn`t move. I finally passed them on the right and flipped them off, after which they moved back into the center lane. I still can`t make any sense out of it.

your a fag steelgrid. Left lanes are for passing, if you`re not doing that then move to the right. It`s not a matter of being a `maniac`... Its the fact that some people are comfortable with driving at faster speeds, and are ok with getting a ticket when caught. It`s not up to you to deliver justice on the highway, because if someone has to burn past you and other cars for being a douche chances are they`ll be mighty pissed and brake check you...
