Sounds likely, but I was limiting it to aliens already within this galaxy. If you`re going with the universe, then the chances of finding us are entire orders of magnitude *less*, even if they can assess which galaxies are more likely to contain life.

Your idea could work on a galactic scale, though. The centre of this galaxy is probably less likely to contains places conducive to life, so it might be better to start a search in the arms.

I think it`s still implausible that they would have surveyed Earth within human existence, let alone civilisation.

So Angillion - if you`re still here - aside from all your eloquent illustration of the practical unlikelihood of alien visitation here on Earth (and withstanding what you consider to be a rather peculiar way of making contact, even granted the best case scenario) have you considered the possibility of their scouting efforts being based on galaxy `design?`

I remember learning about Spiral galaxies, and one of the particulars among them being that they`re more conducive to the sustainability/incubation of life. It was from that moment forward that I began to wonder whether intelligent life elsewhere might be aware of this, and if so, whether that could serve to limit their search to a more effective end?

Let me tell you guys something. About three years ago my Dad drove me to CA at night, it was probably around midnight. We were passing Calexico and out of no where there were red lights- at least a dozen of them, bright, and then fading out into the darkness. I made my Dad stop and we got out to take a better look. Now standing still, I could see that they were flashing bright, fading and then coming back as bright. I was scared, but after a while, I felt this calming effect come over me. One of the lights actually started towards me, and my Dad grabbed my sholder and told me that I`m moving moving in with your Auntie and Uncle in Bel-Air.
What about NASA? There are astronauts, scientists and physicists that have seen and filmed objects while in space that NASA has classified as UFOs.
UFOs != alien spaceships. There are no sightings or films of anything that is clearly an artificial craft, let alone one of alien origin. There are known things that can cause moving or apparently moving lights. There may well be other things that cause them that aren`t currently known. There are secret craft made by humans that will not be officially acknowledged, so any chance sightings of lights from them will go down as a UFO even from the few people who know what they are.

Bottom line is that these things are UNidentified. We don`t know what they are.

More Einstein than Newton. Newtonian physics is an approximation that holds up extremely well at speeds under a few dozen million mph, but if you`re looking at a significant fraction of the speed of light you have to switch to relativity and it was mainly Einstein who laid the foundations for that part of physics.

iii) Even if they do exist, it`s spectacularly unlikely that they know we exist.

iv) Even if they do exist and they know that we exist and they can come here, why would they leave only very unconvincing traces of their visits? Why not hide completely or do it openly?

Why not read the thread? Or just my post from Monday, June 27, 2011 2:38:00 PM, on the preceeding page.

Nobody is arguing that we definitely are the only species in the universe.

Nobody is even arguing that we are definitely the only intelligent species in this galaxy.

Nobody is arguing that there aren`t any UFOs.

What people are arguing is this:

i) A UFO is just an unidentified thing that is or appears to be flying. That doesn`t mean it`s an alien spaceship.

ii) We have no evidence of life anywhere else, let alone people with technology so vastly ahead of ours that they can travel between stars. So why just assume they *must* exist?

What about NASA? There are astronauts, scientists and physicists that have seen and filmed objects while in space that NASA has classified as UFOs.

Or did they misidentify fairly reflective objects being blown around by the often very variable winds a little way up? Or light reflecting off ice crystals to space spiders migrating to heat mirages and a plethora of other, natural causes?

The simple fact about UFO`s is that we humans hardly ever really look up at the sky. Pilots, astronomers and meteorologists seldom believe in UFO`s because they have seen things like this hundreds of times and know the explanation - from light reflecting off ice crystals to spiders migrating to heat mirages and a plethora of other, natural causes.

Arthur C Clarke does a convincing job of demolishing the whole UFO debate in a chapter of `Report on Planet Three and Other Speculations` - I suggest everyone who evens lightly believes in these things, reads it.

To anyone asking about Sonic Booms:

You know they`re already testing technology to alleviate and even prevent sonic booms in super-sonic jets?

Yeah. We humans, who haven`t even set foot outside our moon`s orbit, are already working on technology to prevent sonic booms.

I would assume an alien species high-tech enough to travel through the galaxies would have something capable of preventing them.
Got to agree with Angilion on the physics end. No matter the technology and how far advanced. Going faster than sound will create a sonic "boom" no matter how advanced you are.
That wasn`t my line of argument. My line of argument was that we don`t know how fast these objects are travelling, or even if they are objects. What we`re seeing is light reflected off something or some things (e.g. dust particles, water droplets).

People with technology advanced enough for interstellar travel might be able to avoid causing a sonic boom using some method unknown to us. Maybe matter in front of the ship is teleported behind it as the ship moves, to remove friction. Maybe something I can`t even think of. All bets are off when you`re talking about hyper-powerful beings.
If we could get radar mappings or something like that, couldn`t we get a better idea of how far away it is and what its size might be at the same time?
Ah, yes, radar would do it. You can get distance from radar station to object, which means you can calculate the average speed of the object if you take multiple readings. I don`t know if you can use it to measure speeds over small distances, though.

Hmm...average velocity, not average speed. With highly erratic movement, they could be quite different.

I don`t know enough about radar to be sure how well it would work, but it`s definitely a good idea.

Anyway, that`s a good point. I guess we don`t have any place to start with the measurable characteristics of something that`s "Unidentified," do we? If we could get radar mappings or something like that, couldn`t we get a better idea of how far away it is and what its size might be at the same time?
I`m sure there`s a tape out there somewhere which shows them travelling at the verifiable speed.
I`m not. For that, you`d need verification of size or distance. A smaller object 1000ft up might look like it`s moving at the same speed as a larger object 10,000ft up, but it won`t be. Unless you know the distance (which you can work out if you know the actual size and the apparent size), you can`t calculate the speed.

The lack of a sonic boom is sometimes used by people who believe that these things are alien spaceships, since it "proves" that they are using alien technology to prevent a sonic boom.

I think Crakr makes the single most compelling point (sorry Angillion). Why haven`t I thought of this before? Of course, we are assuming that they WERE breaking the sound barrier, but with abrupt and erratic patterns of flight such as this being such a mainstay of UFO videography, I`m sure there`s a tape out there somewhere which shows them travelling at the verifiable speed. It`d be important to put this question to them.

For the time being and granted full benefit of doubt, would having a saucerical shape have anything to do with it?

I often see something similar to this in my city. It`s some form of spotlight from a club reflecting off stuff in the air. This could be the same, for marketing some piece of media or just for a laugh.

Also possibility is some fairly reflective objects being blown around by the often very variable winds a little way up.

They`re unidentified, but human origin is far more plausible than alien origin. We know that humans exist and that humans are aware of the existence of humans.

So...here`s a video that appears to shows some reflections of an unknown size at an unknown height moving at an unknown speed.

I`m supposed to take that as proof that the gods are watching us?

Did I say gods? I meant angels of God.

No, wait, nowadays it`s "aliens with technology that makes them as powerful as the gods of the past".

Same basic belief system, just changed for cultural reasons.
Wow my fellow IABers are so jaded that nothing they see can be real? I`m sorry for you.
If I cared, I`d be offended by your condescension.

In the past, people saw omens and other religious things in the sky.

Today, in most countries, it`s aliens.

Same thing, different times. Many people Want To Believe in something, whatever fits the culture they live in.

What is your explanation as to why aliens with technology so far beyond ours that their power is godlike are unintentionally seen by humans? If their tech is *that* advanced, why would we ever know they were there unless they chose to reveal themselves?
0
Reply
Male 12,365
Gah!

So even in a highly implausible best case scenario for alien visitation, it`s extremely unlikely that they would have any idea that we`re here.

You`re probably thinking that we`re emitting into space...they could detect that!

Even less likely. Within the last hundred years or so, they would have had to have detectors extremely close (on a galactic scale) to Earth and looking for artificial emissions from it.

Why don`t they visit us already? Because they`ve no idea we`re here. If they exist, of course.
why won`t aliens just visit us already?
Size and time.

I`ll bend over backwards to assume a best case scenario for alien visitation:

i) Assume the existence of alien lifeforms who are people and who have incomprehensibly advanced technology, far beyond anything we can think of.

ii) Assume they are intensely interested in exploring the whole galaxy and will contnually pour vast resources into doing so.

iii) Assume they have a huge exploration fleet and can survey 10,000 entire stellar systems per year.

I`m deliberately assuming implausibly high exploration rates.

So...10,000 stellar systems every year.

At a conservative estimate there are 150 billion stellar systems in this galaxy. Could be double that amount.

So it would take them 15 million years to survey the galaxy.

Even if they had finished by now, it`s hardly likely that they would have surveyed the solar system recently eno

Notice how they subtly get multiple, clear shots of the sign saying "This is the Life 12-06-11". Wouldn`t surprise me one bit if this was another viral ad campaign for another alien invasion, apocalypse movie. With the world`s current economic state, and threat of terrorism. Apocalyptic story lines are selling like hot cakes. So much fear and paranoia surrounding them. It`s almost evil, the people who bank off of scaring others. I`m not talking about just for money either. It has happened so many times throughout history. Don`t allow yourself to be too sucked into the thoughts poured into your brain by any form of media.

Gerry- lens flare my ass.

These days, video footage alone is evidence of nothing (my first thought was viral marketing campaign for a movie).

If this footage is, in fact, unadulterated, then these are UFOs since, as others have pointed out, this footage does not resemble any known atmospheric phenomenon or aircraft. That does NOT mean they are alien space craft. In fact, if we knew for a fact they were alien space craft, they would not be UFOs. They would be identified flying objects.

Do I think it`s possible that these are alien spacecraft? Sure, it`s possible. Still, the most likely explanation is that this video is a fake until I see evidence to the contrary.

No, I`ve never seen an alien but I have seen a UFO. Rather closed minded to think that we are the only intelligent life forms that exist in the universe wouldn`t you say? And to impose our inability to cross these great galactic distances on other alien life is self centered. NASA has listed objects it`s filmed as UFO`s, so NASA must be just as gullible as I am...
