Cry cry cry America

We`ve had pictures on our cigarette packages for years in Canada it`s not some act of "big brother" over stepping boundaries.

I would usually agree that people should have the right to do what they want, but do you know many smokers I know that wish they never started? I`m not saying these pictures will do it, but if it saves one life what`s the harm?

It is my official opinion that the government has way overstepped their boundaries. Not only do they enjoy the outrageous taxes from such products a picture will do no justice to convince the public otherwise. While an educated public is good people are still going to make choices counterproductive to their own health for their own enjoyment. I`m not saying people should smoke but I think people have the right to do what they want providing they are willing to take the risk and pay the price.
Ever stop and harass a truck driver for driving something with a diesel engine?
The truck driver might be doing something useful, even essential for civilisation. Smoking is just a junkie having a fix. It`s not comparable.

Besides, you may have noticed a small amount of attention given to environmental issues recently.
I`m willing to bet that second hand smoke is much worse than tobacco smoke.
I`ll assume you meant diesel and tobacco. I`ll also assume that you have no idea what you`re talking about and are just saying what you want to hear.
We`ve all had this tobacco crap crammed down our throughts for ages now when`s enough enough??
That`s what people like me are saying. Are you arguing both sides now?

Smoking is the only drug use that can legally be forced on other people. It`s unfairly and massively privileged and that should be stopped.

I`m going to assume that was a comment on the irony of the situation rather than an attack on americans.

Also, to those who are saying that it`s the government caring about our health, that`s a bunch of crap. I don`t need the government to baby me. I know what`s healthy and and what`s not and I can make decisions for myself thank you very much.

I don`t care if smokers smoke. I give the smokers I love a hard time because I love them and I want them to be healthy and live as long as possible. I have a little bit of a personal link, though, because I have asthma and cigarette smoke is extremely painful for me to breathe.
Why are smokers constantly subject to harassment?
A slight decrease in levels of legal privileges is not harassment.

Even if it was, harassing people for harming other people is not a bad thing. Do you complain about pickpockets being constantly subject to harassment? Car thieves? Burglars? If not, why not?

They have had pictures a lot worse than those on Canadian cigarettes for a long time. The most effective way to stop people from smoking isn`t random gross pictures, it`s taxation. Where I live in Canada a pack of king sized Belmonts costs $15 all because of taxes. I quit because I started paying for school and couldn`t afford to smoke anymore.

@kairobert - this is social progress? I do smoke, though I am trying to quit, but this is ridiculous, in this age most people know what the health consequences are. Do we also need the government to start putting pics of pregnant teens, ruined livers, and horrible car crashes on bottles of alcoholic beverages? What about pictures of dead soldiers and children from mideastern countries on the gas pumps? fingers with staff infections from papercuts on the cover of a book? This is one step closer to telling people what they can and can`t do; personally I think it is f**king with individual rights a bit.

Guess they`ll start to excessively tax what they deem unhealthy for foods soon too the way we`re going. Why can`t our government stay out of things that aren`t their business? I guess it depends on what they get the most money from we have a crusade against smoking and second hand smoke is made out like it`s a radioactive substance but in the meantime we all get to sit near diesel trucks spewing lead particulate into our faces but we`re never told the effects of that are we??

The warnings are not going to stop me from smoking, but i dont care about them. the thing messed up is why the hell usa is trying to make me stop smokeing, wear a seat belt, control what i eat, ... ect. when it has no liability in my health what so ever. if a government health care takes over my medical bills, than by all means ok i will go for that. but as long as i pay my own dr bills, when i am sick, then LEAVE ME ALONE !!!!! that is the same thing i tell people who walk up to me and say " you need to stop smokeing" PAY MY BILLS AND YOU CAN TELL ME WHAT NOT TO DO, UNTIL THEN IF I WANT TO RUIN MY HEALTH ITS MY DAMN CHOICE

Homicidal, suicidal, genocidal, filicidal (I`m not actually a father though.) dreams were standard fare before I went onto Chantix. They were just more lucid when I was on it.

Since it was free, once the military offered Chantix, a lot of people I knew decided to try it. Beyond highly vivid dreams, no one I knew really had any adverse side effects.

IMO, Chantix is the way to go.

Why are smokers constantly subject to harassment? It`s like the U.S. couldn`t come up with anything productive to do, so they`re just pretending to do something. Kindof like when you hate your job and just pretend to do work.

Also, I love the "smokers tax our health care system" argument, it`s not like the obese majority have any health problems or anything..... We should start putting labels like that on food.

Larry King smoked 3 packs a day for decades. He didn`t stop until he had a heart attack. He`s knocking on 80. Pictures of decayed lungs and rotten teeth won`t change someones habits, it might however stop someone from trying them.
Taxing the crap out of cigarettes while simultaneously frightening people from using them is just another retarded thing our government does. If their plan does work and ultimately eliminates smoking, what will they tax to replace that revenue stream and what will all the tobacco workers do?
I really want to quit. Anyone try Chantix? Any good?
It`s prescription-only for good reasons - some people suffer adverse psychological effects from taking it. It`s a bit risky. You`d *probably* be fine on it. Do you have people who could and would watch you closely for signs of behavioural changes?
everyday i want to quit but its too hard
Easier than a greatly diminished life followed by a very nasty death. Try spending time with the dying. It gives you a fresh perspective.

For both of you (and anyone else):

I`ve seen quite a lot of ex-smokers recommend Allen Carr`s books. Nearly all of them have said it wasn`t particularly difficult - the books cured them of the psychological addiction and the physical addiction is mild to moderate and *very* short-lived.

I`d go further and remove all of the massive legal privileges smoking has.

That would make it a jailable offense. The same assault with any other equally dangerous substance would get a person jailed. The same assualt with a *harmless* substance, such as urine, could get a person jailed and would do if they did it a dozen times a day, every day, without giving a poo about anyone else.

Smokers know that they are putting other people at risk because they chose to feed their drug habit in the way that does the most harm. At best, they don`t care. Either that or they like it, it makes them feel powerful to maybe kill people with impunity.

I quit by reading Alan Carr`s book The Easy Way To Stop Smoking.

Why did I quit? I just didn`t want to smoke anymore. I was sick of it and the more I thought about it, the less I wanted to do it.

The Surgeon General and his warnings had nothing to do with my quitting, nor did they prevent my starting.

Spew your propaganda if you want, it won`t put a single dent in smoking at all, until each smoker decides for themselves to quit.

I`m more worried about microwaved food or flouridated water.

@madest- I agree as well. Yeah, cigarettes are terrible for your health, but it`s absurd that measures like this have been imposed solely on the tobacco industry and not on other industries that profit from selling products that harm people. Not saying that the government should go warning-label-happy. They should cut it out entirely, and go after businesses that are actually breaking the law.

So...if they do get that not everyone wants to get a whiff of their cancer sticks, it`s ok? The Surgeon General can do what ever s/he wants. Addiction to smoking is much much stronger than these photos can address. Wasted time and ink.

There isn`t a smoker alive that doesn`t know smoking is bad for them. I think this is an unconstitutional intrusion into private industry and have a sense that the Supreme Court will ultimately decide the legality of this issue.

I am sure that it is pretty well known about the risks of smoking already. As bad as it is, it is a right. Civil liberties.

@ DrProfessor:

if they want to kill themselves, fine, we`ll let them do it. But they do NOT have the right to put the rest of us at risk with second-hand smoke. They shouldn`t be left alone until they get it that not everyone wants to get a whiff of their cancer sticks.

This is stupid. Like anyone`s going to quit because of some pictures and more nagging after all this time. They don`t even want people to quit. The government makes three times as much (via taxes) on tobacco as the tobacco companies do.

@ Wraithix:

I would NOT recommend Chantix. A good friend of mine took it to try and quit, and it caused such bad mood swings in him he stopped before he carried out his suicidal thoughts.

Chantix has a history of causing these severe swings in its users. I wouldn`t touch that stuff with a 10-foot pole.

"They just.. accept that death comes for you sooner or later, and enjoy the process of smoking."

This is true- everybody dies. But death from cigarettes is one of the most awful deaths a person can have. It can take years to die from emphysema or lung cancer- years of gasping for breath. Plus decades of a nasty hacking cough and smelling like total sh*t all the time.

I`m grateful I was able to quit when I did. I quit and fell off the wagon a few times prior- but then there just came a point where I got so disgusted with it that I couldn`t bring myself to buy another pack. I still had cravings for a little bit, but they were overpowered by my total revulsion to the idea of lighting up again. That was nearly 6 years ago, and I can`t imagine wanting to start again.

Smokers already know about all of these things. They know the health risks, they know the dangers... it`s not a matter of being brainwashed.

They just.. accept that death comes for you sooner or later, and enjoy the process of smoking.

Please, leave them alone.

"Honestly, I never found cigarettes that addictive. I smoked for like, three days, and was able to quit on the flip of a dime."

That`s probably because you smoked for three days. It took me a few months to crave. I`m not too worried about quitting, there`s a whole universe of alternative chemicals when the time is right. The only issue I can see with quitting is deciding when to quit. Not how. Not now.

If the government is going to keep jacking the prices way up I might as well keep buying them while they`re "affordable."

It`s actually pretty damn miraculous how much smoke your body can handle. Sadly no one is allowed to market vapor cigarettes as a safe alternative. When smoke is out of the equation, you`re better off by miles. I`m probably going to get assassinated for saying all that though.

These are lame. I suggested they make them as gruesome as possible to get attention, rather than these tame kitten pics.

Why not?

nice how they had to make it graphical. I guess since America is getting dumber and reading isn`t fundamental anymore this should hit a home run.
