"A* HD Camera. `H` is not a vowel"

It`s pronounced H - D. Not HD. It`s not a two letter word. It sounds wrong when you say `A H -D Camera` doesn`t it? Just as wrong as it sounds when you say `I went to a MD when I was sick`

@scubafett look it up please, if a word begins with a vowel (sound) as well, then you`re supposed to use "an". "an HD camera" sounds more grammatically correct then "a HD camera". think about it. and look it up if you disagree.

    ScubaFett,
The rule for "A" vs. "An" has nothing to do with spelling, and everything to do with preventing a collision of vowel sounds, especially two unstressed vowel sounds. So, for example, "an H" or "an L" are correct English.
On topic - this video was pretty awesome.

@ScubaFett: Pronounce "H" - it starts with a vowel sound.

I must point out that the GPS, balloon, helium, camera, foam, glue and tape together cost much more than $100.

Although if you borrow the balloon and gps and manage to save the camera, then it`s just the helium that you have to worry about, so I guess you can make it under $100.

Looks very cool. The foam was there to prevent the camera from freezing, although after 2 hours that high it might have frozen anyway, maybe they put something in there with it that generates heat?

Use more than 1 cord to attach the box to the balloon and you can stop the spinning.

If I did something like this, I would find a way to stabilize the box carrying the camera, put a camera on each side of the box and one facing down. That way I don`t get vertigo watching the video but can still see almost everything.

@LazyMe: This was first done in the U.S. a few years ago by a young boy (8 or 9 yrs old, as I remember) with help from his father. They put one of those mitten warmer packs in with the camera beside the batteries to keep them warm. Post your video here if you do it. :)

I did this at NASA`s Space Florida Academy.

There are two stabilization factors, first you have swing because the thing is dangling by string, and secondly you have spin. To reduce spin, you use a tail or fin, or anything else that would cause the thing to face the wind.

Swing is a more difficult problem, it turns out what you end up having is a pendulum, you cant stop swing however the longer rope you use, the longer the period the swing will be, long slow swoops instead of a very fast rocking that you would have with a short string.

I`ll agree that letters like L and M start with a vowel sound but H starts with a H sound. "Haitch" not this silent H crap of "Aitch".

Lazy, the foam is more for padding, at that height, the box will actally heat up as the air is too thin to remove the heat fast enough. most electonics will work at a low or high temperature so its not a big worry, just some battery packs wont perform too well under the conditions.

Theres alot of things you need to know about a project like this before you do it to know where its roughly going to land, the types of trackers you can use etc, also the $100 cost is the additional cost of materials that were used that they didnt have already. most people would have the gps tracker, camera etc...

    @ScubaFett

"I`ll agree that letters like L and M start with a vowel sound but H starts with a H sound. "Haitch" not this silent H crap of "Aitch"."

"In almost all dialects of English, the name for the letter is pronounced /ˈeɪtʃ/ and spelled ‹aitch›"

"In Australia, this has also been attributed to Catholic school teaching and is estimated to be in use by 60% of the population."

So there you are. You say "haitch" because you`re in Australia. The majority of the rest of the English-speaking world say "aitch".

@JoeYC I was too planning on sending one up but in one that didn`t pop, maybe a strong mesh that would stop the balloon expanding too much. The point being to let it float around the earth a few times lol. Getting the video back and data, well that`s another story, stopping the helium leaking is another! If I was a millionaire.

go pro`s are amazing. honestly one of the biggest advancement in camera technology- to be able to fit an hd camcorder in an extremely small and durable case and make it relatively cheap.

The Go Pro hero is $259, so I`d really like to know where they bought a two GPS units, a powerful location transmitter, balloon and helium for minus $159.

Just so you all know, It didnt enter space, it only left the stratosphere. Our Atmosphere is verry wide and just that you cant see the earth all in one shot means that it only got REALLY REALLY REALLY high up. Its still fantastic though.

    @ Draculya
Its simple: If you still have a GoPro you cant see this as a great cost factor. so the camera is undamaged. The only things you need to buy is the helium and the balloon. all the other stuff can be sold after the project. thats how you can realize it ;)
