God, are old are all of you, really? 13 or 14?

It`s embarrassing to think that for the most part, I`m younger than you or in the same age group.

I wish I could see the people she was reacting too as she was reacting to it, but it looks to me like they were being assh*les. Not funny.

They cut it off, but after that outburst, he replied: "i would like to take this opportunity to apologize, I would never had made such a comment, had I known you were such a c*nt"

well, its difficult to talk about equal rights and non-discrimination, of not stereotyping, and of treating the opposite sex differently when quite obviously our sexual organs are not the same.

its like how when a woman touches a man its affection and a man touches a woman it becomes molestation. men and women can never be equal, or be treated equally.

but everyone has the right to be treated like a human being, and that meowing is totally insulting felines.

Is she not allowed to look like that? Is there some code that women can`t wear a business suit and if they do it`s sexist?

Holy Hell, I thought it was a man.

She was a manlier man than some guys I know.

If she dresses and makes herself look like that who is she to talk about sexism?

Regardless of if he meows at other men in the same situation meowing is a form of putting women down just like calling someone a bitch is used to say that person is just being a female jerk or calling someone a dick is being the male form of a jerk. It`s a term used to put one sex down. They`re all technically sexist regardless to which sex it`s being said to and if it`s meant or not.

But, really, it was just immature of him to do it at all.

It should also be pointed out that he apologised publicly shortly afterwards. Out of context, here, it looks bad, but Australian politics is like this most of the time. Check out Paul Keating. Politicians can just wait for the right comment to be politically incorrect enough for them to pounce upon.

This one was suitably so. Go Penny.

"is she like an irish/british-jap?"

No, she is Malaysian-born. ...And probably the best Australian politician ever to be on the wrong side of politics.
Note to Angilion: I have never seen or heard a man meow or kitty-raarw at another male who was straight. Kudos to you for being progressive.
I`m not straight. Some of the people I`ve heard do it are, though. Well, probably. They might have been bi and keeping quiet about it.
I agree with GParadox that it was rude regardless.
I agree that it was rude.
He is being very sexist, that is not even a question...he never would have `meowed` at a man that was yelling at him.
Now that you`re claiming to be able to read his mind, I think you should provide evidence that you have the ability to do so. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

I`ve meowed at men before, as well as women. I`ve heard men and women doing it at men and women. Sexism doesn`t always exist.

A while back, David Cameron heckled another MP by saying "Calm down, dear" to them. Nothing was said, because the other MP was a man and in some circumstances it`s normal to insult political opponents in Parliament (as long as it`s done politely). A little while ago he said the same thing in the same circumstances and there were lots of complaints. The only difference was that in this case the other politician was a woman. Some people think it`s sexist to not treat women better than men.

You`re being deliberately sexist as a rhetorical device, right?

I agree with her, it was stupid and crass.
As for sexist well it depends on weather the guy in question routinely makes similair remarks during an arguement, regardless of the sex of the opponent.

If a particular insult is used only on a single gender, it`s sexism. Plain and simple. His comment was intended to dismiss her plan within the context of her being a female (i.e., "She`s sure being feisty today; isn`t it crazy when women get uppity like this?") It`s equivalent to the idea that when men act loudly and forcefully, they`re strong/assertive/aggressive, but when women do, they`re called bitches. She should press the issue and make his political life a pain.

Wow. I`m glad she said something to him.

Funny, I had a similar issue yesterday with an older, male coworker referring to younger, female workers as `kiddo`. More of a bad habit than malicious... but it still pissed the skirts off something serious (probably on the rag, amirite?)

...well, that post took a weird turn...

@freddyferret true, just another jackass politician, and that`s just about the saddest thing about politics.

Was it really sexist? I kind of get more of a "he`s just a dick" vibe. While maybe not a cat noise he seems like the kind of ass that would make some offhand dismissive comment to a guy in that situation.

Eh, maybe not, but this guys solidly in the running for D-bag politician of the year, that`s for sure.

I`m unsure if it is sexism or not. What I will say is that he likely wouldn`t have said it if she were a man. Does that make it sexist? Either way, it is disrespectful, regardless of heightened tempers.

Totally agree with her. If a man gets angry he is being assertive and dominant and `has balls`. If a woman gets mad she is being moody and `feisty` and shouldn`t be taken seriously...in fact meowing almost seems to have a sexual connotation to it as well. He is being very sexist, that is not even a question...he never would have `meowed` at a man that was yelling at him. It`s just as offensive if a black person was getting mad/yelling and someone made monkey sounds at them.
