I really do not want to make a judgement on this one in-till I hear what the officers reasons are. That being said I can see no way that this could be justified as this animal was a pet and the chance of it having a disease is low.

So what if I told you the owner of this dog didn`t take care of it, let it roam the streets, and it has attacked multiple people and parents are afraid to let their small children play outside. I love dogs, but not all dogs are nice, friendly animals. Likewise some people are not fit to own animals. It`s sad that the dog had to die, but in some cases it`s a necessary outcome.

"So what if I told you the owner of this dog didn`t take care of it, let it roam the streets, and it has attacked multiple people and parents are afraid to let their small children play outside."

None of that is the dog`s fault.

Why is the dog killed for the owner`s failings?

That dog was contained and under control. It could have been rehabilitated (if need be) and rehomed.

like @MOTBO said, the police of that county are the animal control. I highly doubt they have somewhere to rehabilitate the dog, or have the budget to do it. In the current state of law enforcement budget cuts where more and more cops are getting laid off what do you think is more important to them? Paying money to rehabilitate a dog or using that money to try and keep one more cop on the payroll?

"There could have been a multitude of situations that would justify the taken actions."

    Yeah, sure, such as:

    1) The dog was actually a rabid 900-pound Al Queda grizzly bear in a clever disguise.

    2) The dog had a gun, and was threatening the officer on Facebook.

    3) The dog was actually Mob hit man Enrico `Ruff Ruff` Demato, who underwent radical surgery to hide his appearance.

Yeah, those work. That`s some fine police work there, Jim.

This is par for the course.

The dog was a nuisance, so the procedure is:

They restrain it, so it doesn`t get away, it doesn`t attack them, and they don`t fire wildly into the neighborhood.

after restraining it, they dispose of it, ending the threat to public safely.

I am a huge dog lover, but this is acceptable. I`d rather them do this, than get bitten themselves, or fire bullets at a moving target in a neighborhood.

    Also:

Musoko, you said none of that was the dog`s fault.

Dog`s can`t be at fault. They are not people.

People who humanize animals are almost as bad as PeTA.

This just in -- according to Lagrange police, the dog was originally misidentified as a Russian `Malaya` class attack submarine.

"The officer consulted his department-issue submarine identification cards, and determined the incoming mass was in fact a hostile Russian submarine on an attack vector. He drew his sidearm and fired some 46 times, rolling twice in an evasive maneuver designed to evade torpedoes."

According to LaGrange police officials, their investigation into the matter will be closed once the pair of torpedoes fired by the dog have been located and defused. The officer will receive a commendation and be issued a bazooka should squirrels in the park acquire T17 heavy tanks."

Another reason why I believe the police are stupid/don`t do anything good for this country. All we hear on the news today are "Chief officers assaulting women" "Officer involved in affair" When will the "Officer saves drowning child" or "Saves dog from drunk men" stories come up? -sigh-

The dog was angry because of that collar-pole thing.

One possibility is that whoever owns the dog called the cops to come down and have it shot... maybe it was diseased, or the city/town doesn`t have a pound.

The dog had reportedly attacked a woman and her daughter at a bus stop after breaking free of it`s leash.

I don`t agree with the police officer shooting the dog, but it should`ve been taken to animal control, evaluated and if need be euthanized there.

If that is standard procedure as an article in the comments suggest, it isnt the cops fault he is just doing as he has been told and trained. I would start with changing the way they deal with situations like this regardless of costs because this crap shouldn`t even have to be discussed. The owner is at fault and the dog had to suffer the consequences because of his lack of responsibility. So my point is that the whole police system needs some reworking and not just in this area, I mean everywhere. I`m tired of seeing this crap in the world already from the USA none the less.

I use to live in a rural area and had a pack, yes I said pack, of pitbull hybrids that would enter my property and killed several of my animals. I have destroyed perhaps a dozen vicious dogs between those I spoke of and others being destructive. Nothing in this video shows why the dog was destroyed and I find it funny that IABers automatically blame the officer. I`m sorry, if the animal was out of control then it should have been put down. I applaud the procedure of restraining the dog before a discharge of the firearm, much safer to any bystanders that way.

BTW, this is completely the owners fault. I will be honest, I`m not a pitbull fan. However, I have met owners who are responsible and train their dogs well. That being said, it may be that I just live in rural Indiana, but the majority of pitbull owners I have encountered have them because they`re large and aggressive. Then they encourage bad behavior.

Sacramantic, you are a moron and I pray to the gods yo

Not a pitt bull folks. This is an american bulldog. An animal on a catch pole is no longer dangerous. (I`m a vet technician and handle large aggressive dogs daily.) This situation could have and should have been handled by animal control. Shooting a dog is illegal in my state. Animals are considered property and this dog had a collar on. This was somebodies dog.

At first, I was outraged by what seems to be the senseless murder of a pet. Then like many others have pointed out, I wondered what prompted the police to be there in the first place. If that dog had seriously hurt anyone in my family then what that cop did was gentle compared to what I would do to it!

"The dog had reportedly attacked a woman and her daughter"

This explains a lot about you. I had suspected as much before, but thanks for clearing that up.

Mays (The owner) pointed out the dog could not have been too angry because Coleman (The woman) chained it at her (The woman) home while blah blah blah....

Reading comprehension/puzzle solving is a rather important part of what enables people to learn. This dog didn`t attack anything. It was startled because it was no where near it`s owner (If it were, "the woman" would`ve never been able to chain it up at her home.) but then the dog realized the lady wasn`t going to hurt it so it obediently did what the lady wanted it to do. How/why it was no where near Mays (the owner) isn`t even clarified.

Not sure where you got that I value a humans life over a dogs But to be clear I value a dogs life over a cops any day. I will tell you what if you jump first I will be right behind you. There were many other ways to handle this animal besides shooting it in public in front of who knows how many people.

    @techstorm

You seem like a very angry person.

As for the dog, I`m glad it was quick, but still, arguably not the best way to handle it..

Human life should ALWAYS be valued over a animal! Are we seriously in a society where animals have more rights? Whats the back story on this... who knows what the dog did that led up to that point. I don` agree with pointless torture of animals but have people all forgot they are ANIMALS?

And this is why you let animal control handle these things. They are trained for it and know what to expect.

Didn`t get enough details to assume the cop`s in the wrong. If it attacked anyone put it down and fine the owner for not being able to properly train a dog. Of course of all things it had to be a pitbull they were originally bred to fight bears so being extremly cautious around one is the smart thing to do.

McGovern you`re an idiot. "Of all things it HAD to be a pitbull" ? What kind of bullpoo is that? Even if it was vicious or bred to fight, that is NO way to put down an animal, that is neither quick, nor painless.

if that dog was healthy and didn`t have rabies, then it didn`t deserve to be shot even though i hate dogs like that. It probably would have been killed anyways and it would have cost a lot more
