I love that it seems the males are riled up. women don`t like the double standards of sex and men just don`t get women when they wear revealing clothing but say "no". lol.

If everyone were allowed to carry concealed weapons, fewer men would attack women (rapists, non-nice individual husbands/boyfriends, muggers). Give us back the RIGHT To protect ourselves from violence, and violence against women would become far, far more rare. Of course, it`s kinda hard to conceal a weapon in a skin tight outfit...
woman dressed attractively means she was "asking for it" is absolutely insane.
...so shorts so tight that you can see camel toe, and so short that you can see the curve of the butt, and a top so short that it nearly reveals as much under cleavage as it does cleavage is "attractive"?

That`s a hooker, if you ask me. But, so many girls out there are dressing like this then complaining, "All guys want is sex!"

Yeah, it`s all true but on the other hand... I think everybody knows that girl who will dress really slutty, go to a club and start dancing with strangers, then go to "a party" with them, or home, by herself in the middle of the night, because why not, she`s "crazy like that" and she likes to "live her live fully". Well, not that she deserves to get raped but how can you be sensible enough to lock the door when you go out and still unable to see that you put yourself in danger?

Then why do old women, children and men get raped too? The sign is right. Rapist cause rape. To say that a woman wearing provocative clothes is asking to get raped is like saying a opinionated or stubborn woman is asking to be beaten by her spouse.

You know, the men here are really hypocritcal. They act like if they are a slut they deserve it. Okay, so you are telling me you prefer women dressed up like nuns (not the sexy kind), not speaking to you, not dancing, and being as sober as they come?

Yeah. I didn`t think so. Every girl deserves the same basic right men get. Not to get drating penetrated by some psychopathic non-nice individual. Not to mention, I know a rape victim. She wasn`t at a club. She wasn`t getting drunk. She wasn`t wearing a skimpy outfit. She was getting off a train at 9 o clock at night from her late-class, walking two blocks to her apartment, and some guy beat the ever living poo out of her and raped her. She ended up having to get an invasive rape kit done, get treated for an STD, only to have him never be found, and cause her to move back in with her parents out of fear. Did she deserve that?

There`s things I do understand, as a female. Like if you know you`re going to get loose due to a couple of drinks and sleep with someone, then claim rape in the morning because you regret your decision, that isn`t right. but to actually think that just because a woman dressed attractively means she was "asking for it" is absolutely insane.

Rapists don`t have an excuse, and they should do time for their crime, but women confuse the poo out of me.

"There are no more gentlemen these days!"

Because you go out in skimpy outfits, get drunk and flirt with a guy who`s just looking for a good time and it "surprises" you that none of these guy will hold a door for you, or be nice after you put out once again?

Dave Chappelle said it best!

As a man, let me just say.
If I dressed extremely provocatively, acted like a total whore, and flirted with everyone at a gay bar, then got raped. I stop and say to myself, “perhaps there’s something here I could have done a little differently”.
There are always many dominoes to fall, you can’t just blame the biggest or last domino, each played their part.

what`s with the crazy formating?
let`s see if I can remove that double post

I think this might be from the slut-walks that have been happening.
While, I do agree that rape is a crime, and that the rapist is at fault, I also think that a person`s outward appearance is a reflection of their inward appearance. So, a girl walking around dressed like a $5 hooker should expect to be treated like a $5 hooker...because that`s how people view her.
Our style and fashion sense should be an image of ourselves, and our personal values. I`m not saying you can`t wear what you want...I`m saying that if you wear skanky clothes, then people will make cat calls, and assume that you`re loose.

Interesting to note that almost ALL of the responses here are by men. Clearly this demonstration has got men talking about the issue. Maybe the wrong men... I`m still unconvinced that it`s a good way to go about it - I don`t think that blankly refusing to accept any responsibility for rape is in any way going to help women. Be as safe as you can be. Reduce the risk. You wouldn`t leave your bike unlocked in the street, so don`t get stupidly drunk and walk home by yourself. Nobody is excusing the rapist, but ffs just take the warning.

This stupid misconseption that telling women not to get completely hammered and walk home by them selves, somehow is a way to excuse the rapist, has to come to an end.

The clothing thing i agree on, and i don`t think a rapist picks a victim based on her dress anyway.

But if you have brought your self into a alcoholic condition of almost helplessness, things are more likely to go wrong. It includes being struck by a car, falling down from a bridge, getting robbed, loosing your shoes - or, last but not least - becoming victim of rape. Or other crimes.

And it includes both men and women. It`s not right, hell, in a perfect world i would be able to leave my car outside the grocery store with the keys in it. But we don`t live in a perfect world.
Do you think rapists choose targets?
Obviously. All attackers choose targets.
Based on what?
Depends. Rape is not as simple as it`s portrayed as being for political purposes. Sometimes the motive is personal and it`s done to harm a specific individual. Sometimes the motive is a warped reponse to someone else, with the rapist attacking people who remind them of that person.

Generally, though, I`d say the targeting is based on these factors:

1) Someone they think they can get away with raping.
2) Someone who their attention becomes focussed on.
3) Someone they find sexually attractive in their warped way.

Now people can shout at me for (3) because everyone is supposed to believe that rape is utterly, utterly asexual in every way. Even though it isn`t.

The point of this isn`t to claim that you are no more likely to get raped if you wear a bikini to a dark alleyway than if you wear jeans and a hoodie alone in your home behind locked doors. OBVIOUSLY.
The point is that regardless of what a woman is wearing, the rapist is the wrongdoer. The rapist is entirely to blame. It is always wrong to rape, in every situation, and it is never your fault that you got raped.

Women still get blamed for rape, all the time. They get told "Well, you shouldn`t have worn that, you shouldn`t have been alone, you shouldn`t have been drunk, you shouldn`t have been listening to your iPod etc. You had it coming". That is all kinds of wrong. Being raped is an infernally horrible thing to go through, and is IN NO WAY comparable to having your god damn plasma screen TV or car stolen. So please, stop making those analogies.

The thing is of course people shouldn`t rape. The same way they shouldn`t murder, steal, etc. But, these people obviously know it is wrong and aren`t changing any time soon. We should be teaching people how to avoid attracting these people, because teaching them not to do it is just redundant. I`m not saying it`s right, but as a woman, I see girls `dressed` ridiculous and tease guys for free drinks or whatever they can gain. These are the woman that cause people to think rape is asked for, and they should not be supported.

Neoptolemos, I suggest you try finding out what actually happened, as opposed to some obviously very effective propaganda.

Having said that, you haven`t even noticed that you`re saying the same thing said by the people you say take the cake for ignorance. So you`re 0 for 2 so far in terms of going on what actually happens as opposed to a distorted propaganda view of what happens.

Incidentally, nobody has compared rape with stealing from a car. So call it 0 for 3.

The ignorance in this thread hurts my brain. Locke357, EgalM and the OP take the cake.

To compare rape with stealing from a car, is utter BS.
Just imagine how mad you would be when your things were stolen from your car, and the cop who types the police report says: "Well, you should`ve locked your car". Regardless if he`s right, people shouldn`t steal in the first place.
Now apply that situation to someone who has been raped. Would the cop say: "Well, missy, you were dressed up like a slut in the first place". No! Because people shouldn`t rape as well.

You convey the same ignorance that made this woman make this sign in the first place. On January 24th, 2011, a rep. of the Toronto Police gave shocking insight into the Force’s view of sexual assault by stating: “women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized”.

That was the reason there were SlutWalks to address this ignorant view on rape. I`m

It irritates me that this entire rally was based on a complete strawman.

That the guy was saying women deserve rape for the way they dress. He wasn`t.

"Don`t forget to lock your doors". Does not equate to:

Anyone who doesn`t lock their doors deserves murdered.
Oh, so unless we have guard towers on our house we deserve it? WHERE DO YOU DRAW THE LINE?!
So *we* should go to prison if we forget to lock the door?!
So, you hate the forgetful?! What about the elderly?!
We are not responsible for being robbed!
Here`s what causes robberies! Robbers!
Etc Etc Etc.

His statement was exactly the same premise as all the other advice that day, like "Stay in well lit areas and with friends".

None of it means rapists are less than 100% guilty. I agree with the cop. I`m also happy to have rapists castrated.

You`re arguing that only gentlemen don`t rape, and then only not women who behave well.

You misandric piece of poo.

You also completely fail to understand the concept of honourable behaviour, which means you have no honour. Which is no surprise. It`s a personal thing - you behave decently for yourself, not depending on how others behave. Well, you don`t but decent people do.

I`ve known a fair few women get falling-down drunk, sometimes while half dressed in a way that would make a hooker blush. So I`ve made sure they`ve got home safely. That`s what decent people do. Not that you`d know anything about that.

Reality isn`t that simple. The distinction you make is more of a matter of whether the victim was specifically picked on an individual basis as a target beforehand or not. Either could be true for almost any crime, including theft, rape and murder. Opportunity is usually a bigger factor in rape than in murder (though much less than in theft). A murderer is more likely that a rapist to be looking for a specific individual to attack.

Still, you can avoid putting yourself in risky situations. Getting hooched up, going to a seedy party full of people you don`t know and then getting blackout drunk is like leaving a 50" plasma screen TV on your front lawn overnight and expecting no one to steal it because stealing is wrong.

This world would be such a nice place to live if it weren`t for all the non-nice individuals.

It`s for people who like to gather like-minded people of the "right" biological group together and make a big public fuss of being angry hero-victims in order to gain political power. They can`t find anything genuine to be angry about, so they have to seize on any little thing they can find and distort it to suit their purposes.

It`s a good sign in a way, since it proves there isn`t anything serious to be concerned about. If there was, they wouldn`t have to be clutching at such thin straws.

Jesus. Rapists aren`t fashionistas. They aren`t raping girls just because they love what they`re wearing. Rape is a crime tied to power, like murder, not opportunity, like theft. Murderers don`t go out and say "That jacket just makes me want to kill the hell out of that guy." Preists don`t see little kids and say "Well, that powerpuff girls shirt is a little bit provocative..."

Surely, there have been a couple instances of false accusations. Those people deserve to spend double the time in jail that those they accuse would spend. But we can`t assume that these are the norm because we`ve heard about one or two. People just don`t like talking about being raped.

My 2¢

Undoubtedly, the rapist is at the most fault, just like the person who steals from your car is at most fault. However, if you left your car unlocked, and left valuables within plain site, you`re increasing the chances of getting robbed. Same goes with rape, the rapist is still the most at fault, however there are precautions one can take to decrease the chances of getting raped, including not dressing like a slut or being plastered around strangers.

ill have to disagree with you there zombunny. the last time i watch AMW the main criminal was wanted for a string of robberies and rapes. one of the victims was an elderly homeless lady in NYC."

I believe he was being sarcastic there Collegebound....

@collegebound, I was being sarcastic when I said that. Many rape victims are elderly, disabled, or otherwise not drunkenly flashing their boobies around. That was my point.

Here`s a true story about "date-rape"

Female Marine I was friends with started dating another Marine in recon. So they of course are banging cause she`s like that. Then she decides she doesn`t like the guy anymore and says he raped her. Well of course the law falls on her side and the guy is arrested and his court date is set for 2 months from that point. This all happened while we were stationed in Japan. When she found out that she would have to stay in Japan for another 2 months while waiting for trial, she decides to drop the case. 2 months was too long for her to wait. So, if you got RAPED you probably would do whatever you could to make sure the attacker got his punishment. Unless you`re a lying b**** which most date-rape "victims" are.

I-IS-BORED, Slutwalk isn`t aimed at drunken hookups in which one of the people involved regretted it later. If both people are drunk and both people consent, it`s not rape. It`s a bad decision. Slutwalk is about fighting the idea that a woman who does NOT consent to sex--drunk or sober--is asking to be raped by dressing in a certain way.

"There is such a thing as self control and personal responsibility."

Then why does being drunk mean if somebody, sober or drunk, has sex with you, after your drunken self says yes, they committed rape? In what way did you not have control over whether or not you were going to get drunk?

"If a man does not have enough sense, empathy, and self control to keep himself from sexually assaulting a woman who has not consented to having sex with him, he is not "otherwise perfectly sane." THAT IS NOT NORMAL BEHAVIOR"

Again, we`re not talking about either person being sober, these are rapes that occur on/near college campuses. The victim in these cases has usually given consent, but was intoxicated. So was he, but he`s apparently responsible for his actions while intoxicated, she isn`t.

"and they`re out protesting the rape that happens on/near campuses, guess what IS a big cause of those since the rapist is an otherwise perfectly sane, drunk frat boy"

"Perfectly sane" and "rapist" do not belong in the same sentence. There is such a thing as self control and personal responsibility. If a man does not have enough sense, empathy, and self control to keep himself from sexually assaulting a woman who has not consented to having sex with him, he is not "otherwise perfectly sane." THAT IS NOT NORMAL BEHAVIOR. A rapist is not a victim just because the woman (or man, as the case may be) he raped did something to arouse his sexual desires. There are millions of men out there who see vulnerable, provocatively dressed women and don`t even consider the idea of RAPING THEM.

"Maybe if you didn`t wear provocative attire, get passed out drunk, with your ass in the air and a tit hanging out of your provocative attire, you wouldn`t be treated like a big hunk of whore meat. You want men to act like gentlemen, when you act like a complete drunken ass. Good luck."

Yes, because that`s how all women are raped. Rape never happens to the elderly, the disabled, teenage girls walking home from school, prisoners of war, or stay-at-home moms.

Despite what the movies tell you, rape is not a crime exclusive to drunk, supple college coeds in tube tops. This is the real world.

@ robosnitz,
whilst I`m not an advocate of women passing out drunk half-naked in clubs etc etc, it still doesn`t excuse sexual abuse. How about when guys strip down to their boxers, get passed out drunk and wave their dicks around? Would it be acceptable for them to be sexually abused then too?

I never got how being drunk means you can`t give consent, but being drunk isn`t a defense against the other person being drunk. If both people are drunk the law can find BOTH of them guilty of rape...
Anyway, blaming a rape victim for getting raped is as logical as blaming a murder victim for getting killed.
True enough. However, if someone was murdered while wearing a Ku Klux Klan outfit in south central LA, wouldn`t you be quick to speculate that the choice of attire may have contributed? I agree that blaming the victim for the act is ridiculous but denying there might be causal relationships is just plain irresponsible.

Rape is a lie invented by Zionists and Communists, true story!

On a more serious note, while I am all for equal rights and treatment, I`ve always found the term `Empowered Woman` somewhat funny and odd. I can`t quite explain why, it just seems like such a silly way to go about it ` I am a strong, powerful woman..` etc. etc.

I don`t get how this is funny. It`s clearly going off the idea that more emphasis is put on teaching girls how not to get raped then telling men not to rape.

Also I agree with zombunny. This post doesn`t make you look funny, it makes you look moronic.

Anybody who says women encourage rapists by dressing in whatever way is mistaken: rapists aren`t just dudes who got super turned on by some dress, they are doing it for the power trip.

Women who say "no" but mean "yes" (which a lot of them do.) are definitely making it harder to convict rapists. If you want to get laid, don`t be coy.
Well I`m not blaming the victim here, because a woman should be able to wear whatever she wants and not be a target of rape, but what you wear does make you a more likely target if some guy is out there wanting to do some raping.
That`s it exactly. There are women out there who dress in very revealing clothes, then complain when guys stare at them. Don`t blame the guys for drooling over you if you`re letting it all show. The guys should stop if they hear "no", but dressing less slutty would be a good start.

patchgrabber,

`...what you wear does make you a more likely target`

I think you`ll find it`s more complicated than that.

Google `bad science` then go to category `rape`. (Sorry, can`t seem to post links.)

In somewhat.. seriousness...

So the other day my roommate told me how she told this guy no the other night, then was disappointed he didn`t try anything. Then she proceeded to tell me that no means yes. Her friend said the same thing.

So apparently the only sign is when they start yelling, clawing out your eyes, and ripping their teeth into your ear. Either that or their just crazy and kinky.

Looks like it`s from a "Slutwalk". I was out at one last weekend - pretty empowering actually :)

It can become very easy to blame the victim, but as they say, "the dress doesn`t say yes".

The one around here came into effect after a policeman told university students they could avoid being raped and attacked by not dressing like sluts. It`s true that most (over 90%) of rapes are by someone you already know.

Well I`m not blaming the victim here, because a woman should be able to wear whatever she wants and not be a target of rape, but what you wear does make you a more likely target if some guy is out there wanting to do some raping. Just like how I should be able to leave my parked car unlocked wherever I want and not worry about it being broken into. Shame we don`t live in this utopian world, though.

9/10 women kiss with their eyes closed.

Which is why it`s so hard to identify a rapist.

Actually: Her sign is completely right. Those people that think that because a girl flirts back with them, because she`s drunk or because she`s dressed the way she is that they can do whatever they want are the bane of society and should be castrated.

I was bored, now I`m just angry. Eff off IAB.
