The interconnection (or clash) of bad habits of pedestrians, cyclists, & motorists alike at just one intersection in NYC

I have the answer that my redneck town uses: Cameras at every intersection + tickets in the mail. I had my license for a whole month before I got caught by those buggers. Now I *always* behave when it comes to intersections.

Side note: With this much bolvine feces in just one intersection, ticket revenue would be a flippin` gold mine.

I live in Manhattan and I have two pet peeves: first, bikers that NEVER obey traffic laws of any kind. They`re usually delivery drivers of some kind, always foreign, and the only reason that I don`t knock them over when they cut me off is because their job sucks and I feel bad for them. The second is how every f*cking driver in the city, especially cabs, will inch aggressively into the crosswalk while people are trying to cross to just make SURE we know that they are trying to turn... as if the turn signal and the waiting car didn`t already tip us off. I tell you... gotta stay on your toes in the city or you won`t make it across town alive.

So the issue here isn`t the street setup, but rather peoples ability to obey the lights. It looked to me that every issue with a bike was because they ran a red light. As are most issues that I see locally here in Niagara Falls. People don`t want to wait the one minute or so it takes the lights to change.

I have to say, this is not limited to NYC. I live in a little rural redneck town in Wisconsin. It amazes me that these folks got their driver`s licenses in the first place. Most have no clue what a turn lane is so make left hand turns from the right hand lane. Turn signals in general seem to be optional - even for the police. Folks don`t bother to look before entering traffic from a side street, lane usage is random and you take your life into your own hands every time you need to use the 4-way stop in town. Rednecks on cell phones while driving and trying to beat the kids at the same time is also rampant and an adventure in itself. Speed - optional. Working headlights - optional. Sobriety - optional!

There have been rumors for years that the county is going to replace the 4-way with a round-about. I can`t wait. Picnic at the demo-derby, anyone?

"why the hell do they keep calling them bicyclists"

Because that`s what they`re called.

What did you think "cyclist" or "biker" was short for?

You do realise the vehicle they`re riding is called a "bicycle" right?

This is one of the reasons that I never want to live in NYC. There are two many people in too small of an area and as comp wizard stated these rules are "effectively unenforceable".

However what really irked me the most was the semi that pulled a uturn and backed into the other vehicle. My dad has driven large trucks for many years and the one thing that every truck driver is taught is safe driving (or should be taught) and he made multiple mistakes.

Generally people in todays society aren`t as aware of their actions or surroundings as they should be. Whenever I drive, whether taking turns or changing lanes, I always make sure that neither a pedestrian, cyclist, nor another car is in the area where I am going.

Last sidenote, please cyclists understand that the roads were made for cars and when there is a car behind you and you are going 15 mph(~25mph)and hogging the entire lane it is within our right as drivers to get pissed.

>.< this really irritates me. I`m a cyclist and i follow the rules here in cali. Motorists are drating insane. They always try to cut me off, and dont look for me in the bike lane when they pull out of driveways. Been hit twice by cars, both times my bike was totaled. One was a hit and run, had to pay for a new bike out of pocket. I seriously hate any type of commuting. And I always try to go through residential areas because of these stupid drivers.

I`m not sure, but I think in Montreal there are no right hand turns on a red light. I know they were thinking of bringing that law to Toronto. There are some intersections here that have signs saying that.
I was hit by a car once because it was turning right on a red light, and the person was looking left (at on coming traffic). I started to cross because I saw the car was stopped, but then she hit the gas and down I went. Nothing too serious though.
Pedestrians needs to know that drivers are stupid. I now always look at the driver (not the car) and make sure they see me before I cross. Even though the accident is not their fault, it can still be prevented if they are extra careful. Car vs. Human, the car will always win.

Welcome to New York City. Pretty much all of the flagged actions are already illegal. Moreover, vehicles are already forbidden from making turns during a red light. But none of it matters, as traffic laws are effectively unenforceable. Sure, they could have cops pull people over and write tickets, but that`s as big a traffic hazard as any of the driving violations. Red light cameras won`t help either: note from the video that the biggest violators aren`t motorists, but bicyclists and pedestrians, who don`t have license plates to tell the authorities where to send the ticket.

Bicyclists should have two choices: cycle on the road and abide by the same rules as a motor vehicle, or be pushed on the pavement and abide by the rules of a pedestrian. Road rules should include displaying a plate and being covered by third party insurance.

As for vehicles, there should be no turn on a red light. All vehicles stop for all red lights. In busy areas, pedestrians should be fenced in onto the pavements and only allowed to cross in designated crossings in synchronisation with crossing lights.

I don`t see why cyclists can`t ride on the sidewalks around here. The sidewalks are required, but there are hardly any pedestrians to use them. Cyclist vs. Pedestrian = no so bad for either party. Cyclist vs. Motorist = really bad for the cyclist.

Thats some badass cycling.. We dont get that beautiful kind of set up here in NYC with all the cops. Back then was nicer when you could do close quarter cycing... Now its "dangerious" Like drat I cant ride a bike.. Ive had my falls but cars and poo I rein supreme. These guys I have respect for. Another thing is by the angle things look complex but on ground level the people are fine and not going to get hurt. Its basically showing worse then it is.

Seems to me that every single potential accident was involving a bicyclist. The pedestrians and drivers, far as I saw, were behaving just fine.

Is everyone in NY an idiot? Does no one know how to drive? Dear lord man.... This was terrifying. I`m from Flagstaff, AZ and everyone rides bikes. No one would ever ride the wrong direction into traffic, however. Maybe because it has a population of 60.000 as opposed to NY, but still.

WTF part of Canada do you live in? Everywhere I have ever lived cyclists are legally required to ride on the road, and only the road. They are also required to follow traffic laws the same as motor vehicles.

Now, that being said when i ride to work in the early mornings I tend to ride on the sidewalks (moving to the road if i see pedestrians) rather than get in the way of the few motorists out at 5am. I would never consider riding on a populated or downtown sidewalk.

I don;t see why so many cyclists are self-entitled asses. It is very easy to stay out of everyone`s way without inconveniencing yourself. Ride responsibly and predictably.

Bicycles are defined as vehicles under the New York State law. Cyclists have all the rights and are subject to all of the duties and regulations applicable to drivers of motor vehicles.

I drating hate cyclists.
They always slow everyone down because they refuse to ride on the sidewalk, and are forever weaving in and out of traffic and people.

If you`re going to get all up on your high horse about people behaving poorly, PLEASE USE THE CORRECT WORDS

As a cyclist, I am embarrassed to watch the behavior of the cyclists in this video. Riding between cars on the wrong side of the street? Are they asking to be street-pizza? Admittedly, I don`t stop at every stop sign (but I do if there are cars coming), but I would never do anything at dumb as what I saw here.

I am usually a pedestrian, occasionally a cyclist and I have to say hat crap like this drives me nuts. Crosswalks mght as well be renamed Deathwalks where I am from, but a small group of us are starting to fight back. Fail to yield to a pedestrian around here and you are likely to get an industrial outdoor paint bomb thrown at your car.

fair warning.

Does America have roundabouts? Or is it a more European thing? I know the first roundabout or "turning circle` was invented in the states.

Some of it is bad drivers. A LOT OF IT are bike messengers specifically. (plus jaywalking).

So it is all three, I`ll give you that. But still, it`s the bike messengers going the wrong way that does it.

well most are the cyclists that dont think the rules of the road apply to them, and some people not using the crossings properly
