let me explain why there is no such thing as HIV immunity, HIV is a virus that needs a specific genetic "key" to get inside a white blood cell to reproduce, when it then successfully finds a white blood cell that fits it can start reproducing, but the HIV has a genetic anomaly of sorts that means that 97% of all its off springs can`t reproduce (they kinda just floats around until it finds the right "lock") because they have a different "key" than the first one, but the HIV produces like thousands upon thousands of other HIV which compensates for the 97% that don`t, and if they spreads to another human with a different kind of "lock" there is a good chance (in this case bad) that one of the 97% have the right "lock" for that persons white blood cells.

fun story actually, a cat once got infected with FIV (HIV for cats) from a human because of that 97% anomaly (i do not know why it got infected)

and that is why there is n

Ummm, yes there is an HIV immunity gene, it is actually the lack of a gene, Chemokine Receptor 5, or CCR-5. If this gene is missing or mutated, like CCR-5 delta 32, the protein that HIV "seeks" is not produced and therefore no cells can be infected by HIV.

@kribbe, i think you are misinformed...My understanding is that immune cells themselves have no receptors for the virus as confirmed by this article in wired magazine."All those with the highest level of HIV immunity share a pair of mutated genes -- one in each chromosome -- that prevent their immune cells from developing a "receptor" that lets the AIDS virus break in. If the so-called CCR5 receptor -- which scientists say is akin to a lock -- isn`t there, the virus can`t break into the cell and take it over."

Absence of the gene =/= cured. he is merely an asymptomatic carrier, he could still be quite infectious. It is a "common" occurance in africa amongst black female. Thing is, we dont know if the virus is still quite alive within them because they are often exposed to it, or because it stays "alive". now what we would need to know is "does the virus stay in a dormant, or does it die out in blood" my guess would be that it becomes what we consider dormant, because it is in a hydrated medium. therefore it cannot "dry out and die" (i hate using alive and dead for viruses...)

i am VERY septic that this is a cure, for a cure would eliminate the virus itself, not change the patient

Hence the frequent use of "functional" cure in the description the doctors gave of the patient.

They all understand it`s not a real cure, or at the very least assume it may not be a real cure, but it very well could open doors to a world without the virus.

    @ scuzoid

i completely agree about the functionnal cure, however it will not create a world without the virus. like stated by someone (too lazy to check) this virus mutates a LOT so its pretty much playing it heads or tails about it. it only softens the impact it has on our minds. its far from being a new find, its merely a suprise of "hey look we have stem cells that do that... cool" he is still very much infectious, so like many things the media make it sound better/worst than it is...

honestly i heard a "specialist" once say "yes you have to take antibiotics to kill viral infections, it is VERY IMPORTANT" during the h1n1 outbreak.

i dunno, as happy as i am for the man, somehow these are not good news in my ears

So you`re saying the scientists that do hours upon hours of research on the virus and in this case years are wrong about HIV immunity? I know someone that had unprotected sex with someone that was HIV positive hundreds of times that didnt get infected. Wanna try again? or tell the scientists and researchers they are wrong?

"ARV drugs do not cure people of the HIV virus or AIDS, they only make people sick.  Most people do not realize that ARV drugs actually feed the HIV virus so that the virus doesn’t go into full blown AIDS and consume the entire body. Thus, ARV drugs keep one alive but at the expense of immense pain and suffering, feeding the virus their happiness and energy."

That`s a new low for spammers here, from BobHolland22. Trying to get people to switch from drugs that work to uncontrolled unknown substances that don`t in order to profit off their suffering until they die. That`s really low.

and it only took 30 years...

    Pretty quick, considering.

CCR5 delta 32 has been known about for years. It prevents infection by a number of viruses. An interesting hypothesis, stemming from the unusual concentration of people with that mutation in northern Europe, Britain and Ireland, is that it prevented infection by the Death of 1348-50 (in those areas), which might not have been just bubonic (pneumonic, septicaemic) plague. Since so many people died in those areas, the previously very rare mutation became much less rare amongst the survivors.

    Interesting idea.

Stem Cell research blocking is dumb. You can turn skin cells into stem cells. What people are concerned about is the Fetal Stem Cells. Here`s a list of types of stem cells and what they are.

Kaagan, that`s the length of time it takes to be classed as `cured` for some medical conditions. I had a bone marrow transplant in 97 but it wasn`t until recently they classed me as cured from the cancer rather than just in remission.
