You can say the same thing about any of the PC retailers. They always rape you on upgrades. Don`t get me wrong I hate Apple, but I hate them because of all their proprietary interfaces and anti-piracy BS, not because they`re selling the exact same hardware as everyone else for higher prices.

I think it`s funny that PC users can blatantly make fun of themselves and you take it as some kind of victory for yourself. Kinda goes to show how pretentious you are when you get angry that your products stereotypes are mocked. Now get back to sharing a cup of coffee and talking about the latest band that no ones heard about with that "real woman" of yours

Wow, thank you to all the PC advocates who surely educated us Mac users with all your name calling and insults on how wonderful life with a PC is. Perhaps one day we can return the favor and tell you what it is like to actually sleep with a real live woman! That is assuming you can stop installing the latest virus software, trying to find plug-ins and patches to actually make things work and finally putting down your Mountain Dews and crawl out of your parent`s basement to see the light of day. Although the chances of that happening are unlikely, there is no doubt we will recognize your kind by the pale and oily skinned rage that bursts into flame in direct sunlight. We will take you under our collective wings and show you the outside world and perhaps the latest Apple product so you can go back to your basements and try to make a cheaper PC copy once again as is the norm...

Well, if you`re foolish enough to go online without any security and you install everything you can find without even checking what it is, then maybe you`ll have those problems.

If you`re not that foolish, you won`t.

While having your choices restricted, your hardware limited and your updates less frequent does have some advantages, I think the drawbacks would outweigh the advantages even if you weren`t paying double for it.

Also, everything you`re referring to is about software, not hardware. You could just run MacOS on a standard PC and get exactly the same thing without paying the Apple fashion premium.

I have a Mac G4 Server (Yes, the proper server, just before the Xserve came out) and I got it for very simple reasons, and for a great price. I had gotten a chance to play with GarageBand on the POS g3 iMac I found in a shop for $13 and liked it. I liked that the dual 867MHz PPC G4 could run most of my programs without issue. And the case looks fantastic. Now, the price? I swapped my iPhone 3g for it. I used to get a week between battery charges (Airplane mode). after the iOS4 update? 1 day maybe. Planned obsolescence, like ALL apple products.
I like apple`s aesthetics and their OS. I don`t like their price, and more importantly, I LOATHE their business practices. This bit with replacing screws in peoples iPhone 4? not cool.
Google "Apple Pentalobular Screw" if you`re curious.

To really compare it, the poster should have done Apple vs HP with comparable (or the same) configs.

I support the general sentiment of this, though you can`t help iFags anyway. Some people just love throwing away money, and apple somehow manages to catch it all.

I guess no one here noticed that you can drating install Mac OSx on a PC with an intel processor by playing around with some settings, thus saving you money.

If you reallllllly want mac`s os (cause face it, Looks != performance...it`s the OS and hardware) just buy the damn software yourself.

I don`t care if you want to spend hundreds on the letter `i` because you`re a fan of it. It`s your money. I find it sad and a bit funny, but it`s not my problem. Why on earth would I be envious of you? If I had more money than I wanted, for some weird reason, I would have bought the hardware I have and donated the "I have Apple products, look at me!" premium to charity.

Sure it is overpriced, but I love my mac to death. I don`t get any of the little gritty problems I experienced with my Win7 laptop on a daily basis, which is more than fair for the lack of games. If anything, it motivates me to get crap done ;)

It did cost me more than I would have liked, though, but not a rip-off for a macbook.

I have a mixed opinion on this... on one hand, I have used PC`s over Macs for years until recently, and I agree that the amount of money that they ask for Macs are ridiculous. It was the main reason, aside from not being able to update them, that I never bought one. My desktop cost like 799 and all I had to do was throw a new vid card in it to make it as good as a mac that was like double the price or more...

I did, however, purchase a old school Macbook Pro recently and honestly, I love it way more then any PC laptop I have ever had. Aside from the low battery life, which is understandable considering it is 4 years old, it works beautifully. I have yet to have a PC laptop that works as well. So I can`t hate on macs because of that.

I guess my stance is that I like aspects of both... and that I am sad that new Macs are so expensive because I do like how they run, just not the price.

They didn`t factor in resale value. My 3 year old iMac may have cost a grand and change, but my model is selling for $750 on Ebay right now. Mind you I don`t hate Microsoft, if it weren`t for them I wouldn`t have a job! (I`m a sysadmin/IT/EDI Manager.) I work on computers all day, so when I get home I don`t want to, that`s another reason why I have a Mac.

I heard from somewhere (I believe it was a school teacher) that Apple`s overall marketing strategy is to invent gadgets that they want to sell and then convince consumers that they want to buy them, instead of the other way around. And when you look at it like that, it`s actually painfully obvious that is exactly what they do.

Pretty much any component which skips a few levels of quality or capacity is going to cost significantly more. 2.26 Xeon Nahalems are around 400-500 each, whilst 2.93 Nahalems run 1400, which at two processors is a difference of $2000, much closer to what Apple charges if you actually do the math as opposed to blowing off the handle. I actually spent some time on NewEgg pricing what it would cost to get what is currently in the MacPros, for the components in the current $2599 MacPro it would cost about $2500, this includes buying a MacPro case from ebay for $350. So while you can go on ahead and find other PC components to make a ch

Let`s face it:

Macs are for people with more money than computer smarts. These people don`t really care about the whole debate, all they care about it that it works for them with minimal effort from them. These people try out a PC and end up with fifty million different problems because... Well, no one knows, but it seems like being around them causes PC`s to break down.

PC`s on the other hand are meant (well, sort-of) for two kinds of people:

1) Less monetarily free people who just want a computer to use (note that this type are the ones you see having so many problems, because they`re basically Mac people who couldn`t pull a couple thousand bucks out their ass).

2) People who have a clue what they`re doing and are willing to deal with a slightly higher cost in PERSONAL maintenance (as in, actually working on and with the computer to protect it from problems).

My PCs last around 3-4 years before they won`t let me play good games with medium-high graphics. Costs me about 600€ to upgrade them.

With 3000€ I can have a good PC that runs pretty much everything for 15-20 years.

@silverflame you are already a sheep if you think that they would ever be the same, its two different computers, two different setups, and while they will work pretty similarily, the hardware differences will make a difference... but would you rather spend the $3000 on a mac or 300 on the same specs for a pc? the only reason the mac os is so stable is because apple controls all the hardware that comes out for macs, they dont need to compensate for hundreds of different manufacturers and update their products, they control everything, no competition for their hardware, so they control the (outragous) prices too, their os isnt all that great in terms of the ability to customize, windows is way better, and even if u truly hate windows, use linux, cant bitch about that

At least these computers will run decently when spending the money. I`ve gone through 5 HP laptops (all purchased brand new and using the warranty from the last) in just under 4 years. First had the fan installed backwards, they tried to replace it and burn the crap outta my harddrive. The next had a dead pixel within 2 days of purchase (I was not settling for that). The third was also a fan issue causing the computer to over heat and either shut off or blue screen. Subsequent stories follow. The next replacement I got a gateway and haven`t had problems since. Fact of the matter is, I got a laptop with similar specifications and in mobile form and it didn`t cost me over $1000 and that`s including the modifications I did to it myself, just buying top of the line parts to replace the factory parts like ram chips, harddrives, even have a better bluray laser in here too, but the point it. Factory built, about $600 and I bet it runs just as well.

You can get the same software (or equivalent) on all three major os`s, the exception to the rule being DirectX and everything that uses it.
Mac/7/linux have the same level of security, The user will always be the weakest link.

So what is there to argue about?
Oh right, cost of hardware and the perceived image associated with the OS. Most of you would be just fine using a stripped down OS like Chrome.

Inb4 the perceived image of google datamining etc etc, they are all doing it. Deal with it.

I don`t know, I got a Macbook after I graduated high school and I`ve never had any problems with it. Meanwhile, as a family, we`ve gone through two computers (Windows/not a laptop) since then (and one or two more before that). They just died-- and I can think of two of my friends who have had their laptops (not Mac) just die (granted those two always buy their laptops cheap/used, so that`s a factor) and they`re always getting viruses.

I don`t like it because it`s APPLE OMG since it`s the only Apple product I own (and I bought it half/half with my parents anyway, AND it was much cheaper than the one in this chart), so... what`s my point? People can have preferences based on their experience with a product (or yes, brand) that is not solely "Hey everybody uses this so it must be good; therefore I like it".

I`m impressed with everybody here who says they built their own computer though-- if I had the brainpower for that I would love to do that... but I d

O.=.o Thats longer than most apple products, or at least around here (as I have stated before I have had to deal with more problems with Mac`s than with PC`s here). However, if you really, REALLY wanted the mac OS, just go and buy a PC that is half the price (at least) and just as good as a mac, and install the OS onto it. Or better yet, build your own for even cheaper!

apple has always and will always be a software company over a hardware company. yes there hardware is overpriced, but your paying for the right to run their software. plus, mac pros are marked towards companies, not really individuals. i work for an HP company, we`re still paying 2000+ for 17 inch core 2 duo`s that are marked for `enterprise` companies. all companies over price professional equipment. get use to it.

I agree with Aragnarok.. I`ve had quite a few different PCs, but none of them compare to my macbook. I have friends who have had their macs for 4+ years, yet I`ve never encountered anyone who had the same PC for more than about 2 years. This is how I think about it: I can either spend $300-$400 every two years for a new PC and deal with the hassle of transferring all of my files each time, or I can splurge once and not have to worry about viruses or a decline in performance.

And as far as having to upgrade because your new mac has become "obsolete," nobody is holding a gun to your head--a new version being produced doesn`t mean I`m going to automatically go out and buy a brand new one. In fact, new versions make me appreciate how long mine will last. So yes, with Apple, you get what you pay for.

I don`t know why this is such a debate, though. Let people buy what they want and worry about yourself.

I think your dad is the exception rather than the rule. My wife`s Dell laptop crapped out, and I got her a cheap Samsung which isn`t bad, but not the best design in the world. I went through PC`s and laptops pretty regularly as the specs became outdated quickly.
Now that I`m working on design, my macs have been wonderful. The mouse on my laptop is SO easy to use, and the finger gestures are fabulous. The drag and drop accessibility of files is also great. It`s not perfect, and we all have our own preferences and experiences. For me, both of my macs have been worth every penny. I don`t just blindly go with Apple, either. I have been using Apple computers for close to 25 years and I have never ever lost a single file nor have I ever had a virus. It does everything I require it to and always has. Basically you get what you pay for in quality. On the flipside of that every peripheral I have ever bought that was geared towards the PC first have died well before they ever should have because they are cheap. In my old job I used to have to sell PC`s and I outsold the rest of the sales staff of the whole store combined. My secret was never to turn them on. All the other salesmen who did try to demo it inevitably ran into problems that always killed their sales. But sheeple like cheap and so the debate will continue forever...

So? My friends iMac is frozen as i type this. My dad has had more problems with his "superior reliability" on his mac than i have on my laptop, desktop and notebook combined.

I`ve had to repair my computers more though, because of little children breaking it (cracked screen, broken usb ports, drink spillages)

What you have to keep in mind is windows is designed knowing that it could be running on any type of machine. MacOS is designed to be only run on specific computers. If apple had to design their OS to work on every machine out there i`m fairly sure that it would have more bugs in it that an NHS hospital.

@bigxmomma: I am on a Dell that is going on it`s 6th year with no upgrades. I don`t game so it`s good enough.

Never once have I seen a blue screen, or an unwanted shutdown.

I`m Auburnjunky, and I`m a PC.

@Webz+any other Mac users: Are you wearing a striped shirt? Also it`s true that a lot of PC laptops suck, I`ve experienced this many times over, but I`ve almost never had any problems with toshibas. only once, and that was a faulty harddrive so not really toshiba`s fault either. but you still can`t fawk with pc desktops, especially custom built ones. Most brand name ones have a descent amount of juice but only in the say processors or harddrives, whatever. but the less important stuff is usually cheap, like the powersupply. So with the brand name ones you can go HP and wait for you power supply to fry or you can buy a dell and over pay (not as much as apple). lol. or you can be smart and shop parts on new egg and build one yourself.

Well then Webz, couldn`t you just buy a PC and run MAC operating system on it? Or is it just that Mac is so much better at putting their individual parts together?

So your argument is, "I like it, so overpaying is a win?"

I`m not sure I follow your logic. I don`t usually get caught up in these debates, but the fact is you are playing right in tho this person`s point. That people who buy macs buy them "because they like them," not because it`s a better computer and/or a better price. You have fallen into the brand recognition marketing scheme that Apple has dished out MILLIONS for.

I had a PC laptop, it ran fine for a few months and then it`s condition started to deteriorate. I did a lot of music and video production and it was absolute hell getting software and hardware to work right; I was constantly having to find fixes and plug-ins to get things to work. The battery was useless. The processor slowed down more and more and within a year and a half the thing was practically unusable. I may not be a computer genius, but I know enough to take good care of a computer. I didn`t download useless files and take up space unnecessarily, there were no viruses or anything. It was hell.

Then I got a Macbook Pro. It does everything I want it to do with no difficulties, it runs superbly, I`ve had it twice as long as I had the PC and it`s condition is still fantastic. As far as my experience goes, there`s just something about the mac that makes it worth that extra price for me.

Mac wins.

If someone wants to spend 3 times more money on a pretty exterior car with all the important parts being below average and a few years old then they can go ahead. Doesn`t mean i`m not going to laugh at them.

I don`t understand how people get so upset about what others buy. I`ve had my desktop for years now and it`s only needed an upgrade in RAM. Even still, I find Apple haters much more annoying than I do Apple fans.

"Plus you buy what you get. If you buy a laptop that is higher quality, you`ll be paying the price - and it will last longer as well."

exactly my thoughts.

And the only thing I ever hear is "gaming". Can`t we just say that for gaming, PC`s are better? I don`t game. Never have. Never will. My 999 dollars Mac is perfect for what I do and for ME easier to do it.

What`s the big deal if not everyone likes the same things as you do? People buy more expensive things all the time (when they can get non name brand things much cheaper). What`s it to you if they spend their money differently then you?

*pssst* hey you! I`ll sell you my `top of the line` computer for just $3200! It`s even got a cool logo on it and it`s sliver in color!

Anecdotal evidence isn`t enough. Check Apple`s website if you don`t believe what you see here.

... AND you can probably pirate their worthless OSX operating system right from under them if you like how it looks so much.

I was grinning all the way through reading this. :-D thanks for posting. I`m glad this has been done because now the debate is over.

It would have come in handy to compare it side by side with components from newegg and then see the totals directly, suffice to say you`re overpaying by a factor of at least 2, possibly 3.

The components are exactly the same, so the quality argument is moot.

I could add to the picture... talking about Apple`s crappy SSDs, and the fact that you can get a 24" LED 1080p monitor for $170 buuuut... I think the point has been made well enough.

Alright, everyone who deals with computers on a daily basis already knows that Macs are overpriced when it comes to hardware and it should be obvious by now that the people who buy Macs either buy them for the Apple brand or because they are used to Macs already. Also I`m faily certain this isn`t up to date for the latest lineup so while I personally don`t like Macs this drating Mac vs PC is stupid and always boils down to anecdotal evidence for and against both sides of the argument.

Also to all those people out there saying macs are hardier, please, spare me. In the ten years I`ve owned PCs, I`ve only had one hardware failure and it`s because I bought my GPU from an unreliable website. If you buy from reliable companies you won`t have many issues if at all.

So HalfPint. Do you think that your Mac will last another 3 years.. because even at 9 years old, the 300 dollar every 3 years is less expensive.

Plus you buy what you get. If you buy a laptop that is higher quality, you`ll be paying the price - and it will last longer as well.

Why not think smart for once and get the parts for cheap, and just a MAC OS? Will save you thousands of dollars, for twice the performance.

Seriously, morons.

I`ve got an $1100 gaming rig, and I`ve had it for about two and a half years now and it`s still playing all of the latest, most graphic intensive games at max settings at FPS. With the video cards they offer on that website, even if you pay up the rear for the best video card you can gt from them, I assure you, you`re not going to be turning the settings all the way up. Even for the price you have to pay, it`s not worth it. Don`t get a mac if you`re planning on gaming. If you REALLY want to get one, get it for art, web design, and video creation.

23" ips panel i was checking out the other day uder £250 Dell want $900 for a "24 or $1800 for a "30 pretty sure the £ to $ exchange rate isnt that crazy :P. I have been telling everyone for years, apple make all these claims about having the best this or that but it is all bull crap. When that macbook air came out they had a MASSIVE advertising campaign saying it was the thinnest laptop in the world which was utter rubbish as another manufaturer (toshiba) i think had already made one YEARS earlier which wasnt only thinner it also had an optical drive in it. Apples response??? sue us while we laugh all the way to the bank.

I`m not a Mac fanboy, but I do acknowledge that they make products which are generally hardier than PCs. I`ve owned both PCs and Macs for a long time, and each has their advantages and disadvantages. I`ve built 4 of my own PCs from case up, and 7 for friends. Building, operating, and maintaining a scratch built system takes a rather comprehensive skill set, and can add a lot of inconveniences. If you`re willing to (some even like it more) deal with all of that, it can be done much cheaper. I do hate this post, because it ignores the differences in hardware for the prices. Granted, Macs do have substantial mark ups. But, for example, ignoring that going from 6 (1 gig) memory chips to 4 (2 gig) would increase the price is a weak and rather stupid base for an argumentative point.

well, it seems mostly true except for the monitor bit. Mac`s display uses IPS, and other ips monitors cost more than the mac.

Hahaha, it is so funny that this should be posted. Me and my friend check the mac website all the time and make fun of the prices. My favorite part is how they charge a ridiculous amount for a "12-core" processor, but it`s only two 6-cores. And even then the processor itself in the mac costs more than my friends computer which has a 6 core and is pretty much the best you can get right now.

Once upon a time Mac was THE way to go for multimedia because SCSI was the only system fast enough to handle A/V production, but this hasn`t been true for ten years. My production PC was cobbled together (with AD/DA converter) for under $600, plus another $100 for offboard mixer.

I`m using some of my student loan to build a computer that will blow this one away (albeit by a somewhat narrow margin, but still), and everything, including shipping, is just shy of $950.

The worst part is, is that something tells me that this is a viral ad from Apple. Stupid people will continue to buy their sh-t, and there is no shortage of stupid people.

Oh, I`ll also be running a pirated version of Snow Leopard, just out of spite. Along with 7 and Ubuntu.

That`s a lot of work to hate on something. What that article doesn`t talk about are things like design, reliability and quality of parts used. It`s like buying a Cadillac or a Hyundai. They will both get you to the store, but you`ll probably be replacing parts in the Hyundai a lot sooner. Went from PC to Mac and I`m loving every minute of it.

So getting everything mentioned here top of the line would run you $16,596.95 Or you could just buy a `67 Ford Mustang. Leave the MAC products to the fan boys. You`ll always get more poon-tang with a Mustang than you will with a MAC.

sound advice

there is no real reason to pay more for a mac....unless you REALLY like the look of one. (and willing to sell your soul for it)

the only things i really splurge on in life really...is tea, ramen and shoes.

Im a tea fanatic...and the cheap ass ramen you get at typical grocery stores suck balls (but are getting better, as more people figure it out) and horrible shoes can make you physically ill (fo reals)

Sort of hard to argue with this--the only advantage, I guess, and the post didn`t really address this, is the suite of software you get with an Apple that works really well with that hardware. But, it`s nowhere near worth $2K extra, holy poo!
