i know a store that uses the single queue line. it does work well sure, but as fast as it moves, when you get in line with 50 people in front of you it is very disheartening...

The Wal Mart near me has one long line for I think up to 6 express lanes. Very neat I think, since it already moves fast because each order is small.
The store I work at has a self checkout, but it`s not always the fastest. My store is near a high-middle class part of the city, so we get a lot of picky shoppers, who like to scan and pack their own groceries because God forbid a price is wrong, or the cashier puts the grapes with the bread. These people have long orders most of the time, and will spend up to 10 minutes checking it out themselves when a (fast/experienced) cashier could do it in 2. Maybe less if the customer bags while the cashier scans. Plus most of the people using these machines have no idea how they work, and will keep taking things off the platform, causing the computer to freeze and say "Please put your item back in the bag."

when i think of it, the grocery store that I shop at has the que system. Although there is always a line to wait for a register, i never have to wait long to cash out. thanks Erlang for your science (:I)

Yea I`m with skypirate. I`m all about the self checkout. It cuts out all of the old people and all of the coupon people which cuts the time in half.

And that is why, apart from food or heavy stuff like furniture or appliances...i buy nearly all my stuff at ebay (No, this is not an advertisement for the company.) With 3 boys and not alot of time to spare, i buy from clothes to dishes in just a couple of clicks and bids. No sweat.

Yay. Statistics.

F*cking grocery stores. I want one line to feed all registers!

Except that would bring up more problems like reduced floor area and the chance someone in the "main line" will be an obstruction, and no small item number lines and finally considering every other way grocery stores try to screw with you it`s not much to complain about.

So never mind then.

@Milo_Pretzel: I LOVE FRY`S! The one line thing works great - it moves a lot faster. I was there for Black Friday, and even with a line that must have been a hundred people long, I got through pretty quickly. The downside of this method (on the consumer end) is that you have to go past more impulse buys (candy, "as seen on tv" items, etc). Gotta keep strong!

@Batmanners: Of all places, WAL-MART is taking the more efficient design? That`s unexpected, to say the least.

It`s so easy to see why a combined queue works better, but for some reason people are bothered by it and demand a system that works much less smoothly... DAMN YOU SOCIETY

Im a supervisor at Ross and we do the combined cue method but ooooohh my do the customers hate it! Somebody always has to try and form a seperate line, they cannot wrap their head around a single line for multiple registers -_-

Yay! Fry`s Electronics is the only store I`ve been to that adopted this method. I like it, too.

Wal Marts have been adopting the one line + multiple registers option. They open up more registers should there be a surge in customers. I love it, and think it`s a fantastic method.

What ticks me off is when you have been standing in line and your one or two people away from checkout. Then this dumbass cashier comes out the back, opens a lane, and grabs all the ones in the back of the line to checkout. Grrrrrrrr!

Even being undead won`t help for long. You start eating your way from the back of the queue, and pretty soon this happens...

@Kralmir. No, because surely the other two till may process and take the next customer regardless of till delay. Thus no-one ever waits too long?

1 line or 3 lines, there is still an x speed that each register can process at. so in total having 1 line for all 3 registers is NOT faster. just evenly distributes the delay for each customer.
