Sitting drating sucks. I work as an engineer and spend 8-10 hours at a desk a day.. I wish I could be up and about, moving around. Sitting is really hard on the body.

Yes, I`m sure that the doubling in obesity rates between 1980 to 2000 was entirely due to people sitting more often.

    sofaking42, lol,

Information graphics are visual presentations of information. They are also known as "infographics" or just "graphics". They are commonly found in the news, in subway maps, airport signage, timelines, and popular scientific literature. Information graphics commonly make use of pictograms and other pictorial elements. Charts, graphs, maps, and diagrams are included in this field. Another example is a contour map, which encodes three kinds of data into two dimensions.

    your word:

    infograph
The word you`ve entered isn`t in the dictionary. Click on a spelling suggestion below or try again using the search bar above.

I don`t see how sitting alone will increase the risk of death. I think it`s the obesity that kills you. You can sit as much as you want as long as you don`t get fat.

    "Sitting is making us fat."

"Obese people sit for 2.5 more hours per day than thin people".

Compare the above statements with the below statements:

"Sitting in wheelchairs makes you disabled."

"Disabled people sit in wheelchairs far more than able-bodied people."

    Correlation =/= causation.

The infographic is probably correct in its conclusion, but not based solely on the information it provides; it has not shown its working, as teachers would say.

We are fat because of the food we eat. 100 years ago we didn`t have high calorie-low nutrient food, now that`s pretty much what most of us eat. Why? because it`s quick and easy. Answer me this: why do people that are in wheel chairs still live to be relatively old.

Whilst I would not deny how sitting is generally a bad idea for lomg, I query the point they make about calories- they claim that your calorie usage drops to 60 calories an hour- that seems too low. But anyway- who does sit that long? Even in an office it would be hard to sit for 8 hrs, and if you did that then you would hardly just go home and watch the telly - would you?

I contest this infograph by way of myself. I am thin as a toothpick yet I sit in a chair 12 hours a day.

I do agree with the glorious 135 degree sitting angle. Most chairs don`t give you that. If you`re buying a new chair, make sure you can recline that far.

"increases risk of death up to 40%"

you mean every minute there`s a 40% chance I`ll die? Or is it before a certain age that you forgot to mention? Or is it in general? Because everybody has a 100% risk of death on a long enough timeline.

I reiterate my previous comment. This infographic is full of sh*t, misinterprets correlations as causations, and really shouldn`t have made it up on the site.

"Sitting increases risk of death up to 40%"

Does this mean that I will have a 140% chance of dieing? I mean, everyone already has a 100% chance of dieing right?

Or does this mean that if I never sit down, I will only have about a 60% chance of dieing and therefore have up to a 40% chance of gaining immortality?

    I`m just trying to clarify!

Now that we are sitting more, we are more likely to die? Bs, we live longer today than those "standers" of centuries ago. The rise in obesity is due to several factors, less exercise, more available and cheaper fast food, and more and more jobs are being done at a computer that used to be done manually.

1out of every three americans is obese? I call BS. Especially when you consider most people measure obesity by your height-wieght ratio. Also known as the Body Mass Index (BMI). This was created over a century ago and is pretty much bullpoo. According to this and the governments new standard for healthy weight measurements, Will Smith, Kobe Bryant, and LeBron James are overweight. Tom Cruise, Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwartzenneger, The Rock, Donovan McNabb and Mike Tyson are all obese.

what a horrible infographic. it uses really weak arguments for its case, used in a way to try to skew data to get at its intended purpose. it presents its data as results without acknowledging causality.
