I thought we were supposed to have good posture in our chairs (not that I ever did- I slouch like a caveman). This says to lean back.

Contradicting info is making me confussed. :-(

I guess they have to show something for their government grants. I think alot of people don`t just seat while on their computers, if you catch my drift.

"Calorie burning drops to one per minute"
Now is that after exercising, or with no exercise? I know more calories are burned after exercise all day.

what a horrible infographic. it uses really weak arguments for its case, used in a way to try to skew data to get at its intended purpose. it presents its data as results without acknowledging causality.

yes its good to be more active but this does a horrific job of trying to get that point across...

@button_guy

"Also known as the Body Mass Index (BMI). This was created over a century ago and is pretty much bullpoo."

Whenever I see someone say this, all I think is "fat person in denial".

Because I doubt IAB is chock full of muscle-bound bodybuilders getting misleading BMIs.

I think what they`re trying to say is that you should take more breaks in your sitting down, not that you should sit down less, because that is, kind of, pretty impossible in our lifestyle.

>>this is retarded and untrue.<<

Because you completely fact checked all their sources. Oh you crazy hipsters.

I stand 8-10 hours a day. I don`t get tired and have to take sitting breaks like the rest of fat america. its nice.

here`s a tip, if you`re going to burn fewer calories, how about taking in fewer too? you wouldn`t put try to dump a full tank of gas into your car everyday while only using a third of it

1out of every three americans is obese? I call BS. Especially when you consider most people measure obesity by your height-wieght ratio. Also known as the Body Mass Index (BMI). This was created over a century ago and is pretty much bullpoo. According to this and the governments new standard for healthy weight measurements, Will Smith, Kobe Bryant, and LeBron James are overweight. Tom Cruise, Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwartzenneger, The Rock, Donovan McNabb and Mike Tyson are all obese.

How are 1 in 3 americans obese... This was brought up at my school and i looked around my class and there was only, maybe, 1 obese person?

"Between 1980 and 2000: Exercise rates stayed the same Stiting time increased 8% and Obesity doubled" They only forgot to include how much more poo we eat and drink.

Anyone saying this is ridiculous is a moron. Obviously not everyone is going to necessarily physically SEE the results, there are plenty of people who look healthy but aren`t vice versa. All of this information is true, and no doctor would every recommend sitting on your ass all day watching TV or being on the INTERNET.

You`re a moron. While this is all true, the picture is also greatly exaggerated, just like media.

Oh, and one more thing--
"Those who exercised were just as fat as those who did not."
...yeah, people lie about that. "How long do you spend on the couch?" "uh... 5-6 hours?" "do you exercise?" "erm... yeah, yeah I exercise..."

@snunicycler, I can`t tell if you are trolling or not. When it said "more likely to die", it was comparing those who sit more to those who stand more. You live longer today due to advances in medicine and living conditions, not sitting more.

Now that we are sitting more, we are more likely to die? Bs, we live longer today than those "standers" of centuries ago. The rise in obesity is due to several factors, less exercise, more available and cheaper fast food, and more and more jobs are being done at a computer that used to be done manually.

"Sitting increases risk of death up to 40%"

Does this mean that I will have a 140% chance of dieing? I mean, everyone already has a 100% chance of dieing right?

Or does this mean that if I never sit down, I will only have about a 60% chance of dieing and therefore have up to a 40% chance of gaining immortality?

I`m just trying to clarify!

"increases risk of death up to 40%"

you mean every minute there`s a 40% chance I`ll die? Or is it before a certain age that you forgot to mention? Or is it in general? Because everybody has a 100% risk of death on a long enough timeline.

I reiterate my previous comment. This infographic is full of sh*t, misinterprets correlations as causations, and really shouldn`t have made it up on the site.

Sitting in front of the TV for hours is only bad if that`s added on top of sitting all day long. I sit in front of the TV for hours but it`s really the only time I sit still.

I contest this infograph by way of myself. I am thin as a toothpick yet I sit in a chair 12 hours a day.

I do agree with the glorious 135 degree sitting angle. Most chairs don`t give you that. If you`re buying a new chair, make sure you can recline that far.

Two hours of surfing, followed by five hours of work (in a kitchen... definitely not "light" work), followed by 10 hours of work in another kitchen. Surfing, hiking, swimming, cliff jumping, and kayaking on my days off. I`m pretty sure that I can ignore what I just read about sitting.

Whilst I would not deny how sitting is generally a bad idea for lomg, I query the point they make about calories- they claim that your calorie usage drops to 60 calories an hour- that seems too low. But anyway- who does sit that long? Even in an office it would be hard to sit for 8 hrs, and if you did that then you would hardly just go home and watch the telly - would you?

We are fat because of the food we eat. 100 years ago we didn`t have high calorie-low nutrient food, now that`s pretty much what most of us eat. Why? because it`s quick and easy. Answer me this: why do people that are in wheel chairs still live to be relatively old.

"Sitting is making us fat."

"Obese people sit for 2.5 more hours per day than thin people".

Compare the above statements with the below statements:

"Sitting in wheelchairs makes you disabled."

"Disabled people sit in wheelchairs far more than able-bodied people."

Correlation =/= causation.

The infographic is probably correct in its conclusion, but not based solely on the information it provides; it has not shown its working, as teachers would say.

I don`t see how sitting alone will increase the risk of death. I think it`s the obesity that kills you. You can sit as much as you want as long as you don`t get fat.

sofaking42, lol,

Information graphics are visual presentations of information. They are also known as "infographics" or just "graphics". They are commonly found in the news, in subway maps, airport signage, timelines, and popular scientific literature. Information graphics commonly make use of pictograms and other pictorial elements. Charts, graphs, maps, and diagrams are included in this field. Another example is a contour map, which encodes three kinds of data into two dimensions.

infograph

Yes, I`m sure that the doubling in obesity rates between 1980 to 2000 was entirely due to people sitting more often.

Also, what about laying down? I don`t mind watching tv in bed
