I get so tired of people bashing Detroit.

There is nothing wrong with Detroit that a single medium-yield nuke wouldn`t fix.

Bright flash, big bang, wait five thousand years and start over.

There`s no hope for the place.

I have no sympathy. If they`d STFU and pay attention in school, illiteracy wouldn`t be a problem. Also the parents giving a sh*t would help.

"The report will be used to provide better training for local workers."

Better idea: close down and move overseas. Combining a high minimum wage with illiteracy and taxes is a recipe for insolvency.

Come on detroit department of education, you`re better than that. Up your stats by 3% and you`ll have beaten the national average.

    @BoredFrank: F.u.c.k. you.

Unfortunately, I am not surprised. Part of the blame starts with corrupt school system and another part is the parents who are either to lazy or unavailable to help their children receive a good education. Fortunately I had a mom and teachers who cared enough about me and my future to stay on me so that I would be well educated. Plus I also have a thirst for knowledge so that helped me as well.

A mind is always a terrible thing to waste. It`s just sad that a lot of people didn`t have the right role models in their lives to help them make the best of themselves. It`s not only Detroit either.

I love how everyone in the comments on that page is blaming the public school system.

Here`s the thing: If the parents and kids don`t give enough of a sh*t to learn anything in a free public school, what makes you think they`re suddenly going to pay to not give a sh*t in a private school?

It`s not the school`s fault. It`s the culture.

Geez that`s sad. My 1st grader has a 4th grade reading level. Then again, I`m actually one of those crazy parents who care about my son`s education. We`re finishing up a year of independent study so I could get him into the local charter school.

How can a parent not care about their child`s education, and when the child becomes an adult, they do nothing about it?? Oh well, the world needs toiled scrubbers too, right?

Not surprising, The DOE has not lived up to it`s mandate and needs to be gutted, All they`ve done is enrich teacher`s salaries and back the liberal social agenda.

What we need is a real effort to combat illiteracy, Not a bureaucracy that intends on cranking out more socialist minded youths.

damn, i actually just read the comments in this forum. f*ck all of you. We have our problems true, but detroit has been falling ever since the riots in 1967. Unlike the other major cities who experienced riots, detroit has just never been able to pick itself back up. This being because of the failing automotive industry, lack of educational funding, crooked politicians, and the ignorant mass of people who only vote for these politicians based on their personalities. kilpatrick should never have been voted in, much less multiple terms. come on the "hip-hop" mayor? does that really sound like a good idea to people?

All detroit needs is to focus its base around some new industry that is up and coming to start over.

Crakr, this has nothing to do with liberal or conservative agendas. Detroit has had to move toward the liberal side or half of the population would have starved off over the passed few decades.

Wow, I really can`t understand how a person could go through life not being able to read. I mean wouldn`t they kind of, I don`t know, pick it up along the way? Surely they would know a few words, like STOP and EXIT. Perhaps learn the ABC song and just let it snowball from there? No? I just can`t wrap my head around this...

cobrakiller: What has happened in Detroit is symptomatic of what is happening in most large cities across the nation. Democrats in control, making false promises to the largely minority populations that they would get them more money in return for their vote. It`s an endless cycle of deceit and corruption that has been going on for over 40 years now.

This is a very sad situation, I would feel sorry for those who cant read very well, that means more than likely you wont be able to advance in life to the next level, like get a much better paying job or further your education..this is sad indeed..that would be a very horrible situation..that means there must be alot of poor people in detroit who are also on welfare, sucking up government funds by getting a free monthly check and food stamps..and government funded health care..(medical card)....and section 8 housing...when these things are just handed over to them, It`s just easier to give up ,and get comfortable with their current situation and status in life, when these people breed and have children, this vicious cycle is started all over again.....

I appologize if that sounds mean, and don`t get me wrong Iam not saying this is the #1 reason for the illiteracy, just one to probably a whole list of problems with Detroit...

Actually that sort of explains why some folks seem to be permanently in "text speak" (brb, lol, b4u, l8tr, etc). With auto correct features and a declining literacy, they may honestly not know how to spell or read the words and ideas they`re attempting to convey.

Here all this time I had written it off as laziness.

I guess me and cobra are the only people that live in metro Detroit so we have to fight against all you other non-nice individuals. This is for the city of Detroit, the majority (by A LOT)of people live in the suburbs just like any other major metro area. Our not so nice inner city areas make the rest of the world think it`s hell on earth, try learning something so you don`t look so damn ignorant this is a good place to start this should tell you everything you don`t know click on the drating links to learn things like: Wayne State is the largest single campus medical school in the country and "Metro Detroit has made Michigan`s economy a leader in information technology, biotechnology, and advanced manufacturing; Michigan ranks fourth nationally in high tech employment with 568,000 high tech workers, including 70,000 in the automotive industry. The minority (Detroit)

Eastern Market is pretty cool too even though it has nothing to do with education or illiteracy. For the people that don`t think we should nuke the city do something productive about it
