The reason I don`t eat ANYTHING whole and/or alive is simple. They still have all their poop in them. This guy just ate a mouth full of locust poop!

Grasshoppers. It`s not a locust until they swarm and mutate.

lol FAIL. Common misconception. Grasshoppers ARE locusts and locusts ARE grasshoppers. The words are completely interchangeable. You could just as easily say a swarm of grasshoppers or a single locust. The pink `swarm-phase` doesn`t change things either.

    @ beternal - FAIL

Grasshoppers are not locusts, they BECOME locusts.
No one knows why, but when they swarm they go through a metobolic change. The heads become larger, the bodies more solid. The larger ones will eat anything infront of them driving the smaller ones forward or be eaten...

It`s like a woman on PMS, real physical, mental changes, only it doesn`t go away later.

we do know why they change, when grasshoppers are clustered together in large groups and their legs are constantly touching, they change. it has nothing to do with smells, sight, or anything else. just overcrowding.

Sorry Gerry, MSc in Applied Entomology and a PhD in Entomology says you`re wrong. Granted, it is common usage to refer to a swarming grasshopper as a locust but that is all, just nomenclature. A single solitary grasshopper can be induced into the swarm phase through (hours) or rubbing of say its head with a Q-tip, and for all intents and purposes it is `considered` a locust, but taxonomically, it will always be a grasshopper.

Notice how `vague` all the websites are when you type that question in to google? - they are wrong, I am right.

"The vast plagues of locusts that periodically create such havoc in many regions of the developing world are really hordes of gregarious grasshoppers"

"Solitary locusts come together only for mating and then behave very much as OTHER grasshoppers do" (Burton & Burton 2002)

Yep, although there was an interesting paper that suggested visual cues had an influence too (Hagele & Simpson 2000). Although yes, generally tactile cues are mostly responsible - all regions, antennae, head, thorax, femur, abdomen... And different regions of each to varying successes.
