@ Gerry: Apparently they`re going to do a "14 RPM test of all four rotors" next... Just get on with it for Christ`s Sake!!! Like they haven`t done all this "testing" already?

BTW, congrats on your 8000th post!

It won`t work. Sikorsky has had this contest open for the last 30 years, and no one has successfully claimed it.

For those of you wondering what`s going on with the test flight: Lots of standing, pointing and apparently duct taping in preparation for the flight.

"Rate of spin isn`t that important, it`s the amount of air displaced that matters."

Please see Bernoulli`s Principle to fully understand why rate of spin is, in fact, quite important.

Lift is not created by displacing air, and helicopters do not fly just by "pushing" air into the ground. Lift is created by forcing air to flow over a curve, thereby increasing velocity and decreasing pressure. This creates a high pressure zone under the curve, which then wants to move towards the low pressure zone, creating lift.

May they could power it using "The Force" ?

ryan99: Rate of spin isn`t that important, it`s the amount of air displaced that matters. They have four huge rotors, each adding up thrust.

Looking way cool, I`ll be on the lookout for updates. Why "Gamera" though? Wouldn`t it be better to name it after something less... rocklike?

Quite amazing.

I can think of a few design improvements though, need to minimize the drivetrain, reduce it to the smallest number of moving parts, remove all extraneous structure. Reduce everything to the barest essentials.
And the rotors don`t seem like they are spinning nearly fast enough for any sort of altitude.
I don`t think they`d want any real altitude with a person in there powering it.
All of the lift comes from the rotors, which are solely powered by the operator.
Yes, but does a helicopter require more power to weight than a plane to lift off?

Actually never mind. You are probably right.

"I don`t see what the big deal is, we`ve had human-powered planes for a while, and people have flown them hundreds of miles"

Human powered planes are glorified gliders. A human powered helicopter doesn`t rely on forward velocity to create a pressure difference. All of the lift comes from the rotors, which are solely powered by the operator.

that doesn`t seem very efficient.

That is ridiculously huge... And the rotors don`t seem like they are spinning nearly fast enough for any sort of altitude.

That`s a silly name for a human-powered helicopter.

They`d probably get more power to weight if they used a guy.

Why not just show us a video of it working? It`s supposed to be tomorrow. Can`t you wait that long, or is this event so important that it deserves a pre-post?

I don`t see what the big deal is, we`ve had human-powered planes for a while, and people have flown them hundreds of miles, all looks like it will do is hover.

Nevertheless it looks like a cool bit of engineering.
