Bill, once you"re done learning how the tides work, we need to talk about statistics and the concept of per-capita.

Never, not once in my life, did I think I would find something that I could agree with 5Cats on.

But I just did.

Good sir, I will give you an internet handshake for that one.

I`d like to weigh in on this as a person with Dutch nationality (from their colonies) who lived through out the Netherlands for 15 years.

Fox news is right to point out Holland is indeed a mess. But its not because of the pot and prostitution laws, those are a minor facet of life there. (Disclosure: I am a dedicated weed consumer myself, and grower.)

Holland is, IMO, like Soviet empire or the Nazi empire. (Not many native Dutch people feel this way cause they are used to it.) Every aspect of your life and exitence is regulatd and controlled by the goverment. The amount of time you spend interacting with the goverment, avoiding fines, paying fines, and the like is immesureable. The goverment there is all powerfull. Even their social policies are another way to concentrate more power & money in the goverment. The citizen is simply a cog in the machine. And the cogs are less rebelious when stoned and satiated.

PS> Holland has the worst youth alcoholism +
It`s still a growing problem there, even if the crime rate is lower than the US, Thus why they are closing so many `coffee shops`.
We`ll see what time will unfold.
The point being is that criminals will exploit marijuana legalization as much as they do prohibition now.
Technically marijuana IS illegal in Holland, but as their policy goes, if they can`t ban they regulate. Seeing as they`re trying to enforce the ban by shutting down the dealers who AREN`T going invest that income in guns so again the coffee shops turn to the black market.
there still isn`t
Large enough for the cartels to control Mexico apparently.

CJ, my apologies, I didn`t make myself very clear. When I said that, I was addressing specifically the "talking heads" in the video, not users that are expressing an opinion on the subject. You are correct, this is the internet, and people are free to express their opinions on any subject without censorship or chastisement. Also, most Europeans I know have been to America (family vacations and whatnot), and those that haven`t and talk sh*t about the place based on nothing are just being trollsome.

On a personal note, I`ve been there literally dozens of times (family vacations in Florida, I`m in Houston about four times a year, best vacation I ever had was touring the SouthWest for a month), and I love America. It has some of the most polite, decent and brightest people I`ve ever met.

Cajun: It`s still a growing problem there, even if the crime rate is lower than the US, Thus why they are closing so many `coffee shops`.

The point being is that criminals will exploit marijuana legalization as much as they do prohibition now.

There was no large hemp/pot industry in America as there were distilleries and breweries. Americans had a taste for alcohol dating back before the revolutionary war. In fact one of the reasons Americans fought against the British was because King George set high taxes on alcohol and other commodities as well.

There was never as large a demand for marijuana, as there was alcohol, and there still isn`t. It wasn`t until the 1960`s that demand for pot grew enough for organized crime to get involved with it.

Marijuana demand still isn`t all that scary compared with the demand for crack cocaine and methamphetamines, but they are co-produced by the same crime syndicates and that is what adds to the problems we have.

One more thing:

The ranking I cited is actually of last year. As a matter of fact Amsterdam has managed to hold on to that ranking for over six years now.

...and before you argue "post hoc ergo propter hoc", there is obviously a demand for marijuana worldwide even in Holland. Even if you cut out one route of access to a product there other ways to get. Most notoriously the Black Market.

@CrakrJak

From your second article:
According to criminologist Henk van de Bunt, each year during the past few years, five- to six thousands weed growing operations are dismantled by Dutch police.

Coffeeshops have therefore more or less been forced to deal with criminal organizations whose large scale growing- and smuggling operations guarantee a steady supply.
Sounds like Prohibition 2.0 if you ask me.

One of the facts that organized crime is still active in the drug trade it the fact that selling softdrugs is legal but growing it in large quantities isn`t.
So shops must purchase their goods from people who are willing to commit a crime to sell it legally to a customer.

Next to that. The Dutch have maximized the THC (the component that makes you high) level in Cannabis to the level of it almost making it to the scale of hard drugs.
Foreigners not used to those levels of THC will use the same amount they did back home and experience different emotions then they are used to.

It`s nice to live in a country that isn`t that uptight about everything, but people who can`t handle themselves in those situations tend to ruin it for everyone else.

I think I speak with a modicum of authourity on this subject, since I lived in Amsterdam for about 7 years.

I actually watched this when it when new, much like one would rubber neck at a car wreck. Heck I even posted it here a few years back.

I`m astounded at the amount of people, many of whom are of Dutch descent, who will actually buy into this bullsh*t.

O`Reilly was talking sh*t out of his arse. No surprise there. Hey Bill, how about you go visit the country you`re lambasting. You know, the one that was voted the best country to live in by the UN.

Wait, what`s that, you don`t even have a f*cking passport?

Weed honestly isn`t bad for you. Yes, it is smoking, so there is cancer risks, etc., but it`s the same as alcohol, it`s fine in moderation. People who smoke weed/ drink alcohol every day usually don`t end up in great places. But people who can use it in moderation are fine.

"Well, he makes a fool of himself! Not unusual for him, eh?
Just the prohibition in the 30`s, when weed is legalized crime will DROP across the board. All crime, except tax evasion (lolz!) because A) more cops will catch crooks now that they`re not chasing tokers. B) more space in jails to keep real criminals IN once the tokers are let out and C) most drug-related crime is over money. Remove the money from pot distribution and viola! A lot less to fight, kill and steal over.

War on drugs = War on citizens. It`s the worst thing Reagan ever did."

Not Reagan. Nixon.

@MildCorma

It`s true that alcohol does more physical damage to the human body, but the social effects are different.

Most of my friends from high school had a good drink every weekend. And a few smoked weed now and then. It got worse and the four weed smokers started smoking in the working days aswell. They got socially addicted to it.

All of us have a decent educations and jobs by now, except the four weed smokers. The smoking took over their lives, and they gave up on their educations. With low job opportunities and drug use habbits they are now in the high risk group of becomming full time unemployed drug addicts with more problems ahead.

Not saying that every pot head has no future, but it`s a sad statistic.

I want to say something about this but I don`t know what...

I live in Rotterdam(+/- 40 km from Amsterdam), no smoker, Dutch, I also have no problems with drugs users. Coffee is also a drug...

It`s funny that he thinks it`s legal in Amsterdam but it`s also tolerated(big difference) in the rest of the Netherlands.

It`s been said before....

British head of the UK science council (or something) quit a few years ago for providing advice. The boards advice, which came from many different leading experts in the scientific community who are well respected and conducted / funded research into pot vs alcohol, said that weed is -significantly- less dangerous than alcohol along with a whole host of additional benefits for legalisation. This argument isn`t new, but you know what, Bill Hicks said it best:

"You`re at a football game. Somebody is being loud, obnoxious and aggressive. Have they been drinking, or smoking pot?!"

I`m also upset they let people like Bill Oreily on, like we don`t have those kind of shows in the UK... a guy comes on, tells us whats happening and unbiasedly reports both sides of the situation "x says blah, y says blah" and then lets us make our own decisions. It`s quite awesome tbh

Fox News is just the cheerleading squad for the ubber conservatives.
MSNBC head cheers for the ubber liberals.

that`s fair & balance.
2 groups of idiots one oposite ends.

Though I will add, Fox News when faced with the dilema of no actual facts to back up a position, has no problem with making up facts.

I am a dutch Canadian and have been to the netherlands and it is just as depicted in the video, very friendly and a very fun place to be. The female traveller is very right to say she is safe there are more undercover police in Amsterdam than in the whole Netherlands and even more so in the famed "red light" district. In all my travels into and around Amsterdam I have never seen viloence or crime. Yes, Americans go to the Netherlands, travel the world enrich your lives the USA is only a tiny piece of the globe we live on. Sure you can find bad things in the Netherlands, but you have to go looking for them.

Cajun: The crime rate there has still escalated, and organized crime has moved in. Netherlands source.. So please don`t go and try to tell me that O`Reilly`s information is wrong when sources within the Netherlands itself recognize the problem is getting worse and they are now closing more and more `coffee shops` because of it.

From your article:

"is the second most criminal town in the Netherlands"

Key phrase: "The Netherlands" as in "not the entire fu<king planet."

and another thing:

"13th Most Livable"

Which beats:
San Francisco (tied with Adelaide, Australia): 29
Washington DC, Chicago, and Lisbon, Portugal: 45
New York City and Seattle: 49 and 50 respectively

@5Cats
War on drugs = War on citizens.
I definitely agree with you on that front but I thought it was Nixon that started that "war" (he was a good president too created the modern whitehouse).

I went to Amsterdam this summer, and I can attest that there are some of the nicest people I`ve ever met over there. The people there are all happy, and it`s very commonplace to have pleasant conversations with complete strangers; I never once felt threatened. Damn near one of the best places on earth if you ask me.

I hate it when people say a network isn`t fair and balanced because one of their OPINION shows has a bias.

Watching Bill O`Reilly is like reading the editorial section of a newspaper. It is supposed to have a slant to it.

Now if this were one of their news reporters saying stuff like this, it`d be a different story. And if you`re going to say their reporters say stuff like this then please post a link, otherwise I`ll assume you have no proof.

As soon as I started watching I thought I`d say something like... "IAB I hope you are posting this so we can make fun of it, not because it`s actual news". But at least what we got was some sort of counter FN message. At least that. So thanks for posting.

The trouble is this has already been said. Everyone (well everyone who`s not an idiot and pays some attention to things) already knows Fox News is full of crap. It`s all been said.

I don`t laugh at something like this from FN any more because it`s completely expected. I don`t even laugh at the retort because it`s obvious.

America, you should get rid of FN before it soils your reputation even more.
